I'm Working to End AIDS

What an amazing group of riders, roadies, volunteers and staff help raise $11.6 million for the HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.  Special kudos to the riders for an exceptionally safe ride.  More thanks to the roadies for a very smooth event. As the offices in both SF and LA try to clean up from the ride, get set for ALC 8 and hopefully take some R & R, please know how grateful we are to everyone who helped make ALC 7 such a success.

For those who registered for ALC 8 on the ride, and yes there were over 800 of you (another record) we will be emailing you information in July to help you begin your new ride year.  We have much to do, we are redesigning our website, looking to eliminate or heavily reduce the amount of paper we produce and send you next year, and improve upon the logistics of this year's ride (which won't be easy).  We will be sending you a post ride survey this month, so please let us know what worked and what did not and any suggestions you may have.

Personally, I need to find a permanent apartment as I have been subletting for the past 6 months and need to find some great digs for Jack and me.  I'd like California to become my home and not just where I work.  I split my time between SF and LA, please stop by either office to let us know how your post-ride ("droop" they call it) is going and share your stories, photos and ideas with us.  ALC 8 can be even better still, with your help.

All the best,

OLD CAPTIONS

In 1995 I rode the Boston to New York AIDS Ride with 3400 of my closest friends.  It was an incredibly impowering event for me and within three months I had quit my job of ten years and started working on the Rides fulltime.  Since then I have worked on 26 rides around the country.  I was the Logistics Director for the Philadelphia to DC Ride, the Florida Ride and the Ride Director for the Red Ribbon Rides (AKA Walgreens Red Ribbon Rides) and the Sunshine Ride for Children.  I have also been doing fundraising for over 20 years (yes I must have been a child).

I moved to California from Fort Lauderdale to be the Director of the AIDS/LifeCycle and I am thrilled to be on this team with this wonderful staff.  I have gotten to know all of them through volunteering on the past 5 ALC rides.  If this is your first Ride, congratulations!  I hope AIDS/LifeCycle 7 changes your life the way these events have changed and improved mine.

All the best,

Michael

Messages of Support for Michael

Annette (3/14/08 2:57PM): Hi Michael, We haven't met but as a participant of ALC 7 I wanted to wish you the best in your new role as Director of the ALC. I ride for my brother, Chris, who passed away from AIDS, so I appreciate all the hard work you are doing as well to help put an end to HIV/AIDS. I can hardly wait until all 2500 of us roll into LA. Annette

San Francisco AIDS Foundation
Committed to ending the pandemic and human suffering caused by HIV, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation develops innovative solutions, combining scientific evidence with community experience to fight HIV/AIDS and promote health. Established in 1982, the Foundation provides direct services to thousands of people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS and supplies information to thousands more about HIV prevention and treatment through programs that include the California AIDS Hotline (800-367-AIDS). The Foundation promotes HIV awareness in the community and advocates for sound HIV/AIDS policies at all levels of government.

L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center
The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, a leader in battling AIDS and caring for those who are HIV-infected since the earliest days of the pandemic, provides free medical care to those who can't afford treatment and distributed more than $21 million worth of free HIV medications last year. The Center also provides one-on-one and group therapy, mobile testing/counseling, education, advocacy, and prevention services. Each month 700-1,000 people are tested for HIV at the Center.
