Cycling to End AIDS, One Mile at a Time!

Thanks for stopping by my AIDS/Lifecycle homepage!

Did you know in 2005-2006 I ran 6 full and 4 half marathons (that's 26.2 and 13.1 miles each, respectively!)?  Yup, it's true.  Three of those events were also for SFAF (through AIDS Marathon).  You'd never know it by my ever expanding waistline and seemingly endless ailments in 2007, but things will be different in 2008!  So after taking a much needed respite, I’m hanging up the running shoes for awhile and hopping on my bike!

I'm now training for AIDS/Lifecycle 7, which is the 7-day, 545 mile bike ride from San Francisco to LA during the first week of June!  Yes, many may think I've completely lost my mind (again!), but it actually feels really good to be back training and exercising regularly again. I actually survived the latest training rides this weekend: 65 windy miles on Saturday - including NOT stopping on the grueling Sausalito hills!!  And then I rode 40 miles on Sunday for a weekend total of 105 miles! Who'd a thunk it!  Me, a bad-ass cyclist!

OK, I'll admit it, I've even named by bike, Rhoda B., since we’ll be spending so much time together.  Take a close look at that name, she hates to be called Rhonda!

Now you gotta know I'm not just sharing this as an arbitrary proclamation; I'm actually starting to fundraise, too!  I’m trying to raise at least $6,000 by May16th.  The good news is I'm almost there because I've already raised $5,800, so I'm in the final home stretch!  I'm hoping you'll carefully consider supporting not only me, but this very important cause.

The money I help raise will support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, one of the oldest and largest community-based AIDS service organizations in the US. You may or may not know, last year marked the 25th year of the AIDS epidemic. Although many advances have been made in the last 25 years, we are still a seemingly long way away from a cure, and more people than ever are living with HIV/AIDS.  As state and federal funding for HIV/AIDS services continue to get cut, your financial support is needed now more than ever before!

Thank you very much for any donation you may be able to make.  And please, feel free to share this with others that might be able to help me achieve the fundraising goal.  Rhoda and I would love to be over-achieving fundraisers!!

Thanks again,
Joseph & Rhoda B.

Michael (6/02/08 4:03PM): Hi Joey G~ I saw Rue today and told her you were riding your bike from SF to LA. She looked down her nose and said, "He Crazy!!". I promptly relied, "Well you're a horses-ass". After some attitude, I asked, "So what's up with the long face?" Hope your Day #2 went well. I sent you a long message yesterday, but don't think it went thru. Thinking of you. Be well! Michael

Rozenia (6/02/08 4:02PM): I know things are going better today. Have fun and don't let any mishaps get you down.

Hope the boys are cute. :-)

Pedal strong.

Michael (6/02/08 2:07AM): Dear Joey G. ~ I hope you ended Day #1; happy, healthy, and whole! On Day #2, I hope you wake well rested and ready for the challenge ahead! I'm so proud of you!!

Day #1. was full of many contradictions, profound insights, and true blessings. I thought I was going to the Cow Palace to support you in your send off and realized that it was you supporting me. Your love, care, concern, big heart, and encouragement has brought me to today. It is so vivid and true! I told you in January that you and Dean are the reason I'm alive. I'm so grateful.

I answered the alarm and got up at 5:00 a.m. to give you a rousing and bolstering send-off. To tell the truth, I also wanted to see a parade of Lance Armstrong's in spandex! J There were some!

As each person pedaled off, your statue (#511) with a missing hand and broken fingers flashed into my mind. Yet another great contradiction came to me. Each person showed up and made a great start in a "come-as-you-are" way. Some with broken hearts and missing parts, but each well intent and in complete perfection. The prayer came alive today..... Darkness then Light. We entered the Cow Palace in shadows and darkness and emerged in the great light of day. Sadness then Joy. The opening Ceremony produced tears for many and the sadness was replaced with the joy of remembering. Despair then Hope. With the despair and discouraging truth that HIV is again on the rise in San Francisco, hope was present in all gathered. Raising money, providing services, and the selfless contribution of time, people put hope into action. Doubt then Faith. Moments before the start, I'm sure that every Rider asked themselves, "Can I do this?" Then each pushed on their pedals and demonstrated a complete act of faith. The question was answered with an inner strength, "I can do this!"

Once you rolled over the start line, you did not look back! Faced with the reality of mosh you were 100% focused. As I cheered your start, you did not see me run behind you along the fence as far as I could till you drove out of sight like your Grand Mother used to. Please know that your Sponsors, Supports, the Angels and Saints send to you positive energy. You are respected and loved!

Thank You for continuing to do for me the most amazing thing. Travel well! Love, Michael-Michael-Motorcycle

Allison (6/01/08 7:10PM): Well, you must be through day one by now. Hope you are having fun and keeping both wheels on the ground. Keep pedaling!

SusanOrtiz (6/01/08 5:22PM): Hey Joe, by the time you get this, it will probably be day 2 of your ride, (big a.m. storm kept me from getting this out to you for the end of day 1. Thinking about you and hoping you are having fun and that your bike (and you) are without scrapes and breaks. I'm really proud of you and your commitment. You Rock! Love, Mom

PS - Sarah and Andy say - Uncle Joey is the greatest!

Sue (6/01/08 1:27PM): Well, you are on your way to Santa Cruz. I am so proud of you for doing this and raising $6000. Stay safe and have fun. Lots of love,

Sue and family

Logan (6/01/08 11:01AM): Well, while you're tush is being punished by those awful bicycle seats, mine will be padded and pampered by the warmth and comfort of my boyf-erm, my bed :P Good luck on your first day of pedal-pumping. Ride safe and be strong. *hugs*
