Hacker Rides Again!

I know you all think I am crazy to do this again....maybe I am.... oh hell, I know I am.

This is an incredible event that takes place every year and I am privileged and honored to participate. As most of you know, I ride for very personal reasons, losing my brother to AIDS in 1990. While this ride can never bring him back, I hope I can do my part in battling this disease.  I humbly appreciate your support - without it, I could never make such a difference.

Thank you! Hacker

Thank you to my sponsors!!!!! You guys are amazing. I set my goal high and am quickly closing in on reaching it.....so of course I have to simply raise my goal right??? (I must be working with the sales team too much!)

Your generosity and dedication to helping this cause puts me at a loss for words...and we all know that's hard to do.  Thank you!

That's me holding up my bike in Victory after my first AIDS Ride in 2001.

Boy am I tired!!!

I took a break from cycling last week and went hiking in Yosemite. Now that was hardly a break since I logged about 25 miles of hiking....a lot of it uphill. Ow - who knew my quads  could hurt in totally new spots!!

On Saturday, May 17, I joined my friend Lynne for a ride down in Mtn View.  It was the double metric but since I had a commitment in the afternoon, we opted for the SHORT 88 mile option. Ok - first of all, 88 miles is not short. Second of all, it was damn hot - I'd say it had to be 90 and I have the sunburn to prove it.  Those folks who rode the entire 129 - my helmets off to you - it must have been a killer day.

Now since I had all of that guilt for not riding 129 miles, I thought I would tap into my masochistic side and got up early Sunday morning to join folks for the 95 mile ride over Marshall Wall. Since Lynne joined me, she must also be a masochist...but I digress.

The ride was great. Carol met us at SB along with about 40 other folks and off we went. It was super foggy as we headed over the bridge; the foghorn bellowing its cry to any ship that might come to close. As soon as we hit Sausalito, the fog was gone we had a sunny 40 miles out to the Wall. As soon as we got within a mile of the climb, the fog and cold was back.....perfect for climbing that beast.

While it is tiring, it's never that bad and with Carol in front setting a nice pace, we went up that wall without a hitch. The next 10 miles to Pt Reyes were grueling only because I was STARVING!!! After a quick lunch, we hit the rode again and set out for home. We picked up Andre along the way in Fairfax and had a nice visit/ride on the way back.

Next week, it's Alpine Damn on Saturday....and then nothing until the ride itself. OMG, I can't believe it's almost here!!!

Cranking it out....and resting!

 CRANKING IT OUT!!!

Last week I have made an effort to lengthen my commute by taking the long way home from work (10 miles instead of 4) and even tackling 17th street a couple of times - BRUTAL!!

Last weekend was Day On The Ride and the weather was fantastic! I met Marie, Jenn, Sandy, Dale, Darlene and Kate at the Hall of Flowers and we all rode out together. It was a great experience to be riding so with many people at once - a much needed reminder of what the Ride will actually be like. I found my pace with Dale and he and I rode together the entire day. I saw Lynne a few times during the day...but she's too fast for me to keep up with. All in all the day was great and it put me in a much better frame of mind for the upcoming event.

I went out the next day with the Cat 3 group and we rode Alpine Dam/Mt Tam. Now that was an awesome ride. I was ready to die of course but riding with Carol and Lynne made it all right. We finished up the tail end of our ride with a shopping spree (ok - it was not really a spree) at Mike's in Sausalito - now that was fun.

RESTING!

Yesterday I got up very early (5am) to ride out and meet Marie and Jenn on Canada Road for a quick spin around Woodside. I decided on my way down that I would skip the 20 mile loop they had planned and just head back.  I have been putting off too many things I need to take care of at home and getting back early would give me a jump start. So I met the girls (after a little it of back tracking) and we rode down to Robert's Market for a quick snack. They went on their loop and I cranked it home as fast as I could.  Seventy six miles at 15 mph average ..not bad! :-)

So today I rest - hanging at home with Laura and the kids, getting my packing list together and doing some much needed laundry. I have a Yosemite hiking trip this weekend so no biking, but enough exercise to keep my heart and legs pumping until I get back and hop on the  bike again.  Wow - just four weeks away.....

A litle wind anyone???

April 19 update...........I went out yesterday to meet Debra for a Pt Reyes ride. It was so fantastic to see her again, it had been years. Well I forgot that Debra likes to get to Pt Reyes via Mt Tam and Stintson Beach....ouch.  The climb up Tam was actually not all that bad and I was feeling pretty good. Going down the backside was just as incredible as I remember....but I did forget how much your hands hurt from all of the braking!!!

The 15 miles from Stintson to Pt Reyes was pretty brutal. We faced tremendous headwinds but pulled together to form a pace line to help each other out. By the time we reached Pt Reyes, we were all exhausted and ready for some food!  As we sat there eating, the conversation among all cyclists reverberated the same sentiment.....what the hell were we all doing out here on this freezing windy day.

Luckily we enjoyed a tailwind on the way home....well,most of the time. At other times, the wind came from the side and tried to knock us off our bikes. By the time we reached Fairfax (after a beautiful detour around the nasty pothole-filled 2 mile stretch of Sir Francis Drake) we were all pretty spent. Poor Debra needed to rest but my legs needed to keep going so I bid my friends adieu (so happy to see Chris and meet you Gabo!) and hit the road. I cranked it as much as I could and was home in an hour and half....not bad for 24 miles!

So I'm giving myself a break today  from the wind and the hills.  Next week it's DOTR and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!!!  Just 6 weeks away...wow!

Hot mama!

April 12 update...........Wow - what a ride this weekend! It was so HOT!!!  I had a fantastic time, riding out to San Rafael to meet some new friends for the Happy Cows Ride to Pt. Reyes. Even with two flats and a crash - we had a fantastic time. While I have been starting to freak out about the upcoming ride, this weekend has put my mind at ease. It's reminded me how great the Ride and the people can be.

Next week....Alpine Dam and Pt Reyes again????
