THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY AIDS/LIFECYCLE 7 WEBPAGE!

Dear Friends:

During seven days this June, I will bike 545-miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles in AIDS/LifeCycle 7 to benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation – a non-profit, community-based organization that is committed to ending the human suffering caused by HIV/AIDS.

Last year I was the top fundraiser in Northern California with more than $40,000 in sponsorships for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. This year I am committed to exceeding $40,000 and need your help to meet my goal. Please consider making a secure, tax-deductible contribution here on my webpage.

Eighteen years ago at age 19, I learned I was HIV-positive. Faced with what I believed was a death sentence and few resources, I dropped-out of college and lost hope. Thanks to the support of wonderful friends, excellent medical care and counseling, I was able to put my life back on track, and my hope for the future was restored.

Today I remain hopeful as new treatments emerge, and strong as ever in my determination to beat this disease. But many others living with HIV/AIDS do not have the resources and support to effectively manage their illness, and young people, communities of color and others often lack information to protect themselves from infection.

The San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s work is critical to meeting these challenges and has shaped the way we respond to HIV/AIDS as a community and a Nation. The Foundation directly serves more than 100,000 individuals through client advocacy, benefits counseling, housing assistance and HIV prevention, and reaches more than 1.5 million others through community outreach, public policy advocacy and the Internet.  I am proud to have recently joined the Foundation's board of directors to participate in their excellent work.

Why am I riding 80 miles every day for a week? To support others who are struggling with this disease. To honor friends we have lost, and prevent us from losing more. To thank those who have fought so hard against this epidemic. To conquer a personal challenge. To do my part to end AIDS.

Please consider sponsoring me by making a secure, tax-deductible contribution on my webpage. Your support will help bring hope and dignity to people living with HIV/AIDS, and create a brighter future when this disease is a terrible memory, one that we will never see again.

Sincerely,

Dan Bernal
Cyclist #1130

David (5/25/08 3:00AM): Dan,

Kudos on your valiant fund raising efforts -- not a feat for the faint of heart. And speaking of heart, you've touched mine by sharing your story about how this disease not only attacks one's body, but how it can devastate one's spirit as well. I too found myself, some 21 years ago - a sophomore in college, faced with an HIV diagnosis and the realization that my life would invariably be cut short by AIDS. And though, so far, I've managed to beat many of the odds from a health standpoint, I've often struggled with how to reconcile an HIV+ status within the greater scope of my life. Thank you for being the model of courage and grace to which I aspire.

Thanks again for all you do, and here's to you reaching your goal -- you're the man!

Godspeed

ALC6 Thank You!

Thanks to everyone who sponsored me in AIDS/LifeCycle 6. Because of your generous support, I was the top fundraiser in Northern California, raising more than $40,000 for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation!

Participating in AIDS/LifeCycle 6 was life-changing. Imagine 2,300 riders and 500 roadies united in our determination to end AIDS, schoolchildren lined-up and cheering as we rode through rural towns, and 3,000 candles flickering on Ventura Beach during our last night. I rode into Los Angeles knowing that we succeeded in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS throughout California, and that no one is alone in their fight against this disease.

I am grateful for your friendship and support, and for the faith you placed in me to meet this challenge.
