I'm Riding to End AIDSFrom June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle 7 (ALC7). It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.
I started cycling about five years ago, as part of my weight loss journey. I have lost nearly 100 pounds and have now kept it off now for over 5 years, and cycling has been an integral part of that. I discovered an activity that I truly love which makes "exercise" so much easier, no work involved (well, maybe some on those hills.) You can view my ride log at BikeJournal. The first year I did the ride, in 2005, I found out that my part, riding the bike to Los Angeles, was actually the "easy" part. I just had to eat, ride, eat, ride, drink water, pee, ride, eat, ride, shower, eat, sleep and repeat this for seven days. Those of us who rode were supported by Roadies; volunteers who set up and broke down campsites and rest stops, served meals, poured water, made Gatorade, picked up trash, parked bicycles, fixed bicycles, picked up exhausted riders, wrapped sore knees, gave massages, lead cheers, gave directions, hung signs, marked the route, and just about anything else you can think of. They are amazing! It's because of these things, and because after 26 years there is STILL no cure, that I am doing the ride again. And I am able to do it because I have the support of my loving 2008 will be my second year as a Training Ride Leader, leading or co-leading rides for new & veteran riders training for AIDS/LifeCycle. To see my upcoming training rides, please visit my TRL home page. You can also catch photos from recent training rides there also. And I look forward to doing the ride again with my friends from Different Spokes of course, that is a given. There are typically a dozen or more of us who do the ride each year. Almost 22 million men, women and children worldwide have died of AIDS, and an estimated 40 million people are living with HIV. Help me support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation by giving what you can. We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past. My fundraising goal this year is to raise $10,000 (again) and your support would truly be appreciated.

partner, Bill, who has been absolutely wonderful. He will tell you that we eat, sleep, drink, breath AIDS/LifeCycle (true), but he also will put together a fabulous post-training ride BBQ feast for those training rides in Hollister. He knew before I did, that I would do the ride again that first year. He is one of the poster children of supportive cyclist widows, whom we become for so many months of the year.
