I'm riding in support of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation

Thanks for visiting my homepage.

From June 1-8, I'll be riding my bicycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles in support of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Despite the advances in AIDS drugs and therapies, the virus is still around and still causing problems.  There is still no cure.  This past year, one of the first trials by Merck ended in failure, but efforts continue to combat this disease. The current drug regimens help many people stay ahead of the virus, but the drugs don't work for everyone and the drugs can have side affects that interrupt one's life.

I have friends who have had the virus for many years.  I know of others who have recently discovered that they are infected.  I have friends who have ones close to them who are HIV positive.

The San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) works to help those with HIV. SFAF works to educate people so they know the risks of their activities and to help them make intelligent choices. SFAF works to find new ways to lower the rates of infection. SFAF works not only in California, but on the national and international level.

Help me in supporting the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Thanks again :-) Paul

Messages of Support for Paul

Jim P. (6/13/08 7:29AM): Hi Paul, I hope you had a great ride. So great of you to participate!

Kathleen Morris (6/10/08 6:08PM): Congratulations, Paul, on another ride completed, and thank you for all you do. You're amazing!

John Stimac (6/09/08 12:10PM): Paul, I hope the ride was another success this year. I am so proud of you that you do this. You truly inspire. I hope you enjoyed it. - JP

Mary (6/08/08 8:48AM): Congratulations, Paul! It was a pleasure spending the week with you. Until next year, Much love, Mary

Laurie (6/07/08 6:20AM): One more day Paul - YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Ride fast, ride safe! See you soon!

David Faulkner (6/06/08 2:41PM): Pedal Paul, pedal! Unless you are eating or sleeping. I have good news. I e-mailed a friend of mine at the Hyatt Regency Washington and he is going to get the four of us a suite. Yea! The U.S. lost 49,000 jobs in May or 5.5% unemployment. Oil is up to $139.00 a barrel. I sure hope the economy improves soon. I guest you folks must be getting pretty close. I hope everything has gone well for you on the ride. Looking forward to seeing you in DC!

Scott Aitken (6/06/08 2:15PM): Hope you're having a fun ride. The weather here continues to suck, so stay down there as long as you can. Gas has gone up another 15 cents a gallon, so we'll all be riding bikes soon. None of this matters, of course, because according to the prophesy of Yisrayl "Buffalo Bill" Hawkins, nuclear war starts next Thursday. Maybe Hillary will finally concede then. :-)

Scott

David Powell (6/06/08 11:48AM): It is Friday...I guess you must be heading to the beach at Ventura! One more day to LA! KEEP IT UP

Yas Ikeda (6/06/08 9:35AM): Tues. there was a bad storm, but I was in the dentist's office and did not even see it. Rick said he was in a windowless room so did not see it. Anne and children opened the door and decided to go into the basement. Luckily, both of our areas did not have any falling trees just lots of rain and wind. It went further east and north of us. Hope your weather is good out there. Love, Mom

Harris (6/06/08 8:38AM): Paul - hope you're having a great ride. It's nasty out here and I have a century in Wenatchee tomorrow. Look forward to seeing you next week and heariing about your triumphal ride. Way to go!

Spencer Cotton (6/05/08 10:25PM): I hope you have made it through to the end now. It's just amazing what you do each year for this cause. It's quite inspirational. I look forward to seeing you back on deck, Spencer

Michael Chertok (6/05/08 9:05PM): Hey Paul,

Congratulations! You're in the home stretch now.

I hope the ride has been going well. I bet the weather has been better there than it is here in Seattle.

You're a real hero!

With love,

Michael

Bill Reeder (6/05/08 7:39PM): Paul, You are in hte home stretch, hope you have had a great ride. I look forward to hearing your stories.

Michael Pipta (6/05/08 3:02PM): Hi Paul, Since I could not swim with you or do spin class, decided to travel to Boca Raton and Atlanta for a site evaluation. It is hotter than hell here; really hot. I sweat just looking outside. Be grateful the ride is not here! Oh, and Monday and Tuesday I have to go to Mexico City for another site evaluation. So much for training! Hope all is well. Spin those legs with gusto all the way to the finish line!

Hank (6/05/08 10:54AM): Hey Paul,

You're almost done! I'm sure your legs are getting tired (not to mention your butt and neck), but hang in there.

Your participation every year I've known you is an inspiration.

(Did you hear from Kai? He was over the other night and we were talking about you.)

hlm

julie curtis (6/05/08 10:05AM): Hi again Paul,

Just sent you a message, but don't think it was submitted. So here I go again.

You're famous at work now. Your name appears on the list of top donors on the home page of the ALC website and you have a great photo on day one of the ride. We're trying to figure out how to capitalize on your fame and popularity. We are scavinging your office and files for all original signatures you have and then we're posting them on e-bay. We'll give you a percentage of the profits. With proper marketing, maybe all of us can retire and just hang around Alki point.

It looks like you are having lovely weather, and I just love the photos of your road helpers and the stage shows at night. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, has nothing on you guys.

One dumb house thing. The bearded irises that I planted several years ago and that you and I agreed would likely never bloom in my yard proved us both wrong. They are profuse and expanding as I look. It's great. they're a boring white, but I don't care. i finally have irises -- great big frilly ones.

Take care and enjoy your last two days!

David Faulkner (6/05/08 9:22AM): Hi Paul, hope you are feeling well and not too tired. I bet the ride is really beautiful. Well looks like Hillary is going to suspend her campaign this Saturday. Nancy Pelosi and other top Democratic leaders had urged her stop. Wonder if Obama will offer her the Vice President spot? Keep pedaling! You are doing a great thing Paul! I really admire you.

Derek (6/05/08 9:03AM): Congrat's on passing the ½ way mark. It's all downhill from here.

How's the bum? Are you using the special saddle butter? Are you getting your share of peanut butter bars, bananas, sports drink, etc? So many questions... Enjoy these last few days & take lots of pictures. I'm anxious to see your latest adventure!

Bob Reynolds (6/05/08 8:31AM): Hey Paul, You should be in the home stretch now. Just 2 more days of riding? Workplace isn't the same without you & Al, so please return.

Marcia Palk (6/05/08 7:54AM): Paul, hope the rest of your ride goes well. Amazing what you do outside of work- keep pedeling! You're not missing any great weather up here-cold/rainy? -Marcia Palk

Kelly (6/04/08 11:00PM): Hope you got my other message from Lane 2 swimmer. Your voice today sounded very different. You must be getting lots of fresh air. You sounded excited about your ride. The ocean view must be spectacular. Ok, go little fishy and enjoy eating all your favorite foods with no guilt as your riding so hard :-))

Alan Taylor (6/04/08 7:28PM): How's it going Paul? I hope you're butt's not too sore, and the wind has been at your back. I'm guessing you're doing just fine. I'll explore the website to see if you're in any of the pictures. Julie sent a real good one, so maybe she got it from the website.

Ride on!

Alan

Laurie (6/04/08 7:22PM): Hi Paul!!! We miss you at the office! You aren't missing anything exciting though (new system went live Monday, web next week - we're still testing) and the weather has been yucky...wet and cold. You're almost to the end - it's Wed, Jun4th. Only 3 more days - you can do it!!! Ride fast, ride safely. See you soon!!!

Ricky (D) (6/04/08 2:43PM): oops, looks like your pic might be listed under Day 2, but it might actually be Day 1 of the ride, yours is towards the end, where they start showing the camp for the night.

Take Care!!

Ricky :))

Ricky (D) (6/04/08 2:36PM): Hey Paulie!!

Took a few mins break at work, and looked at the posted pics of the ride (Day #2 I think) on the website under tab: "Experience The Event" AND THERE YOU WERE!!!!!!! A really nice picture in your Frontrunners top. I'll have to mention it at workout tonight. I didn't feel very good Monday, so didn't make it to practice, but I will definitely drag myself to the pool tonight.

Your call-in didn't mention any cramps,so that's good! Hope you are having fun, and making new friends. Find a cute single tall dark and handsome rider for me, and bring him home (LOL) -grin-

Ride well & Take care!

Best, Rick =^..^=

julie curtis (6/04/08 9:08AM): Hi Paul,

There's a great photo of you from the first day of the ride -- photo 138 of 147. Looks like it's been a good ride so far, based on the pictures -- sunny weather and pretty views.

We're fine here -- miss you and Alan of course. Lunch with just the three of us isn't nearly as much fun. And no one helps me drink the coffee.

Let's see what else is worth writing about. Nothing -- but that won't stop me.

last night Obama got enough delegates for the nomination, but Clinto won't concede yet. You've probably heard all that nonsense.

here's one that you might not have heard, though. Rupert Murdoch has been annoyed at MSNBC for being too "liberal." He's especially irritated at Keith Olbermann of MSNBC because Keith keeps twitting on the mistakes, lies, and nastiness perpetuated by Bill O'Reilly of Fox. So Murdoch published Keith's home address in the New York Post on Monday. Sounds like the Valerie Plame treatment to me.

Okay. That's enough inanity to be posted publicly. Until tomorrow, happy riding!

Kermit (6/04/08 9:02AM): Okay Paul, you're over halfway there! Wooo-hoooo! Hope you're having fun riding in the sun. (Remember to bring some back with you.)

Brenden Witte (6/04/08 7:28AM): If someone asked me for a one word definition of Paul, I would say dedication! Paul is a devoted swim coach and committed to the fight against AIDS. There are not enough "Pauls" in this world...

Wish I was riding with you and wishing you the best!!

Andy & Bella (6/04/08 6:11AM): Good luck Paul! Wish you the best on your ride.

David Faulkner (6/04/08 5:42AM): Hi Paul, I hope the ride is going well. I hope you are feeling well. Well Obama now has the # of delegates to make him the nominee but Hilary will not conceed. She has the popular vote. I can see how she feels. They both need each others supporters. I truly believe he needs her supporters to win the presidency. Obama may have to ask her to be his running mate. It has certainly been a very interesting primary.

David (6/03/08 3:35PM): Howdy,

Hope you are done for the day and have had a shower. I imagine you have been getting out there early as usual to keep ahead of the crowd. Hope the weather keeps you comfortable on the road. I so much want to do this ride again in the future. Keep safe and enjoy the ride. Go Rider!!!

Bill Reeder (6/03/08 1:57PM): Hope you are having a great ride...

as a side note Pete and hugh are now past the half way point, and should have left Gunnison Colorado last night.

Hopefully you also were able to find y buddy, Kati (Katalin Bartfai-Walcott)

Lewis (6/03/08 1:24PM): Paul

I hope you are have a great ride as the cap to the great year of fund raising you had.

As always I'm impressed you can do something I can barely think about - have a great ride and I'll look forward to talking when you get back to Seattle.

Cheering from Texas. Lewis

John McHale (6/03/08 11:12AM): Hi Paul:

I thought of you as I woke up to rain this morning and headed downtown to teach the class. I pictured you heading out on a beautiful morning with temperatures mild enough that only arm warmers were needed for the first hour.

Have a great time. I look forward to hearing about your ride and how easy it was this year after working so hard on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I appreciate your reliable presence and missed you today.

Cheers,

John McHale

Kainoa (6/03/08 10:38AM): Hi Paul,

I would rather be biking!! It is Tuesday morning and it has been pouring rain since I drove to the pool at 5:00 a.m. this morning.

I hope you are enjoying your bike ride and feeling strong and fit!

Keep up the good work!

Betty Lowther (6/03/08 9:44AM): Greetings from Virginia. Hi Paul, I was sitting at my desk having lunch & wanted to let you know I was thinking about you. Hope the ride is going well for you. I'm so impressed that you do this. We're all doing great. Spending alot of time in the bleachers watching Chip play baseball. Life is good. Take care & good luck!

Raleigh (6/03/08 8:17AM): Hi Paul! I told Julie I think about you often when I'm torturing myself on a long run. What would Paul do? Keep going, of course! You are an inspiration! Good luck!

Bob Reynolds (6/03/08 8:14AM): Hey Paul,

Hope the ride is going well. Also hope you are getting better weather where you are. Steady rain here today. The M&A meeting was very exciting yesterday. Remember to keep rubber-side down.

Bob

David Faulkner (6/03/08 6:17AM): Hi Paul, hope you are doing well. Hope the weather is good and you are feeling good. I hope they feed you guys well. I am sure that is something to look forward to as you pedal onward. So Dick Cheney was talking to the Natl Press Club and mentioned again that he is distantly related to Barak Obama. He also said he has Cheney's on both sides of his family and they do not even live in West Virginia. Well that did not sit well with the govenor of West Virginia as you might imagine. Be careful.

Your Lane 2 Irish Boeing Swim Friend (6/03/08 12:14AM): Did you guess who I am ?? It's Kelly. Really like the little factoid you passed along regarding needle sharing. Sorry bout the cramps your getting. sounds like par for the course for your ride. I listened to your gabcast. Good to hear the voice sounding well and assuming your equipment is holding up. Cat did a great job with long workout last night (Sunday) and short workout tonite Monday. Ok, take care my friend. ciao

george (6/02/08 9:11PM): Hey Paul. You are a true champ for doing this ride. Good luck.

George, Jerry, Josh and Danica

julie curtis (6/02/08 8:16PM): hi paul, hope your first day went well. looked for you in the photos, but today's photos aren't posted just yet.

sure was quiet and lonely at work without you and alan. it's really cold and overcast here. kate said that when she and phil backpacked into the mountains off of i-90 yesterday, they wound up camping on 5 feet of snow at 3000 feet. they are crazy, but i guess that's not so bad when you're young and in love/like/lust (relationship too new to be defined yet)

nothing else to report. bob enjoyed your standing 1 pm meeting on m&a so much that i think he is going to do it every week -NOT!

take care and hasta manana

Joanne Jaeger (6/02/08 8:07PM): Hi Paul,

Hope you're doing well and enjoying your ride. School is over here next week. Can't believe how fast this year has gone. See you soon in Virginia!

Love, Joanne

Yas Ikeda (6/02/08 6:04PM): When you get here, you can see my Turkey photos in two albums. I took too many, but I was gone 25 days. Joanne went home Saturday. Glad she was here to help when my back muscle went. It is fine now. Hope your ride is going well. Love, Mom

Ricky (D) (6/02/08 4:30PM): Hey Paulie- Hope your cramps are better, I sure know about them. I didn't get out to Coleman last weekend, and haven't swam since swim with you last Wed. I'll try to go tonight (Mon 2nd) Sure won't be any fun without getting to be encouraged along by you, especially when I'm so out of shape. I sent a note about you off to a few close friends, and my buddy Jan (Polish Guy) from London. Hope they read a bit about the event, follow the ride and sponsor you. You might even get a note from one of them hopefully. You deserve it. Ride strong, have fun. More soon. Take care- Ricky =^..^=

Brook (6/02/08 1:19PM): Paul, good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Owen Hastings (6/02/08 9:30AM): Hi Paul, break a leg! Hope your ride this week goes smoothly, and you have good weather. Thanks for doing this... you're an inspiration! Cheers, David

Alan Taylor (6/02/08 9:18AM): Hi Paul,

I'm just about to head to the gym here at the Leadership Center. I'd rather be cycling. I hope you're feeling good and riding well today, the first day of the ride. I see you raised $17,850. That's absolutely fabulous. I'm very impressed. If you ever stop doing this event, they will miss you!!!

Anyway, I hope the wind is at your back and your trusty bicycle gets no flats.

Enjoy the ride.

Alan

Tim Welch (6/02/08 8:59AM): Hi Paul! It's Monday morning and you must be well on your way today, enjoying the beautiful views along the coast. You are not missing any great weather here. It was cloudy all day Sunday, and today has also started out cloudy. If your legs start to feel tired, just back off, give them a rest and enjoy the scenery, and say "it's great to be alive!" to yourself. I am at work about to have my morning tea, so I will drink it in your honor. Have a wonderful day of riding!

Sarah Plotkin (6/02/08 8:56AM): Hi Paul, I trust all is going well and you're having fun. I just wanted you to know that we are thinking of you and tracking your progress. Cheers!

Carol Troup (6/02/08 8:38AM): Good luck Paul!

David Faulkner (6/02/08 7:52AM): Hi Paul, I hope it is going well. I think it is great that you do this ride every year! You are a good guy! Don't know if you heard about the fire at Universal Studio in LA. It happened on Sunday. No one was killed. A few fire fighters were had minor injuries. The New York back drop for a lot of movies was destroyed along with town backdrop for Back to the Future movie. Take care, ride well and safely. Looking forward to seeing you in DC in 3 weeks for the swim meet.

Mike Kleer (6/01/08 8:52PM): Hey Paul, Hope Day 1 went well! Stay healthy and safe! Mike

Clayton (6/01/08 7:44PM): Paul- thanks for your important work raising funds and having a big impact. Enjoy the ride!

Kainoa (6/01/08 6:16PM): Hi Paul,

Hope your first biking day was a good one! I know the first several days are tough as there are many hills and you often cramp. Hope this went better this year.

Hope you are enjoying the beautful Calfiornia Coast line and enjoying your friends that you are riding with all in honor of a great cause.

Keep up the good work and stay strong!!

Best, Kainoa

Scott Aitken (6/01/08 3:38PM): Hope you had a great first day! Have fun!

Debra Stangland (6/01/08 2:10PM): Hi Paul, I just finished a 12 mile bike ride and the hills of Seattle get me. You will be riding over 45 times this route. That is wonderful. Keep the spirit and enjoy yourself. Debra

julie curtis (6/01/08 11:17AM): Hi Paul, Hope that your first day went smoothly and you're enjoying yourself. It's cold and gray here. Looks like it's cold, but less gray, there. My prediction for tomorrow -- more of the cold gray for us -- but warmer and sunnier for you as make your way south. Another prediction for tomorrow -- Bob and I will miss your calming presence at work

I'm psychic as well as psycho. Now that T's and my swinsuit modeling days are waning, I thinking of moonlighting as a fortune teller -- put the old eight ball to good use.

We spent yesterday painting Cindy and Matt's new apartment green and purple -- closer to the chartreuse and puce of the old Cyclops Cafe in Belltown. Very arty and fun. All we need is to hammer funky copper pans on the wall like the Cyclops.

Until tomorrow!

Alyson Littman (6/01/08 10:42AM): Hi Paul- I imagine that you'll get this on day 2 of your ride. I hope it is going well so far. I imagine it is beautiful. As I mentioned, I biked the coast back in 1999. It was glorious! I did my biggest ride of the year yesterday (and nearly of the last couple years, since pregnancy and Rosa have curtailed by riding). I rode out to Duvall, Carnation, and Fall City, ending in Snoqualmie, at a new neighborhood called Snoqualmie Ridge. Brand new and HUGE, but well planned with bike trails. You should check it out. Anyway, the national news of note is the MI and FL will have delegates with 1/2 vote. Have fun, and enjoy! Congrats again!

peterphan (6/01/08 10:40AM): yo paul. i hope you get this. not sure. its only june 1. good luck down there and say hi to mark. hope your body is feeling spicy! if not, sing inspirational mariah carey ballads! see you soon!

James Kuan (5/31/08 8:03PM): Hey Paul - congratulations and best wishes for another successful ride. 545 miles is no small task! clearly you will go through a ton of butt balm or body glide this week. Have a blast!

James

John (JP) Stimac (5/31/08 10:27AM): Paul -

I wish you the very best on this year's ride. I hope this year has few flats and the breeze is at your back the entire way. I'll keep in touch. - JP

Spencer (5/31/08 7:53AM): Paul, I hope you have a great time! I'm always in awe that you do this. Look forward to seeing you and hearing all about the ride when you return.

Linda Becchetti (5/30/08 9:46PM): Paul - I look forward to seeing you on the ride. I won't be very fast this year; training was a bit sporadic. Pam is working Sports Medicine again as a PT. Congratulations on raising over $17,000. I got behind the curve on fundraising so have a very modest contribution this year. Linda

Bill Reeder (5/30/08 9:27PM): Paul, Have a great ride... will do a 25 mile breakfast ride in the morning with Tom Harrylock, , and think about you while we eat our Omlets

Julie Curtis (5/30/08 8:52PM): Hi Paul, We miss you at work already. No big fires, just miss having you there to help us drink the coffee and decide where to eat at lunch. Poor T put Bubba to sleep this morning. She was sad, but stoic.

Hope the weather is cool and pleasant all the way down the coast.

Laurie Y (5/30/08 8:02PM): GO PAUL GO - Cycle fast, cycle safe!!!

Did you hear our announcement this week? Susanne has accepted the position as pension manager!! Yay!

Be safe - looking forward to hearing about the ride :)

Yas Ikeda (5/30/08 7:25PM): Thinking of you. Hope the weather is good and you have a nice riding week. Love,Mom

John Hall (5/30/08 6:24PM): Wishing you a safe and fun ride! I'm starting to get a hang on riding with diabetes and rode 75 miles last week. I only ended up dazedly wandering around a Larry's Market looking for food once! Don't take any wierd drinks from strange drag queens.... unless you want to, of course!

Tim Welch (5/29/08 9:58AM): Another year of cycling over 500 miles for a very worthy cause. I am proud of you Paul! Thanks for being such a dedicated swim coach too. I'll email you during the ride.

Thomas DeVera (5/28/08 10:11PM): You are the best, Paul. The AIDS Ride is lucky to have you. Have a great ride!

Rick Peterson (5/28/08 10:03PM): Good luck on your ride, Paul!

Roland (5/27/08 8:33PM): Hey, Paul! We're so close to starting ALC 7. All these years together... can you believe it? You are an inspiration to many and your fundraising numbers are simply awesome. See you in San Francisco, and all the best.

Roland Roth Rider 1275

Gary Gausman (5/16/08 3:37PM): Paul: Have a great ride, raise lots of money and let's end this disease!

God Bless, Gary

Spencer (5/13/08 10:14PM): Paul, You are amazing! I'm always inspired by this incredible ride you do each year.

Michael (5/11/08 6:21AM): Paul, Spin those legs with gusto. And after yesterday's Lake Washington loop, I'll say stock up on those WetOnes; you never know when you'll need to 'freshen up'; I might add some neosporin too, just in case you get a boo boo.

Rider #5534 (5/07/08 1:54PM): It's truly inspiring reading about your being a TRL so far away and in the rain, and battling bone spurs and arthritis, too. See you on this year's ride. It looks like you're ready for it.Martin

Tiffany #1975 (5/05/08 6:26PM): Birthday Boy!!! You don't look a day over 23...usually I just say that, but it's for real this time. You rock Paul. Not just on riding like Lance, but your fundraising efforts are top notch. Just make sure it's all legal, ok? Maybe laws are different up there in the rain. The California sun is waiting for you down here and I have found the perfect rope for you to tow me on. Tailwinds until then. Tiffany XOXO

Ken P (5/05/08 10:51AM): Have a great and safe ride.

Hank and Chris (5/03/08 12:45PM): It's very inspiring to see you participate in such a long ride year after year. Perhaps it's the worthy cause; perhaps it's all the spandex; either way, good on you Paul. Ride Well and Be Well.

Todd (4/30/08 7:51AM): Warm congrats for doing this great work, and still looking fabulous in tights.

John (4/29/08 4:57PM): Have a safe and fun ride again this year!

I'm off to San Francisco

It's 3:15 in the morning.  I'm off to the airport in another hour.  My flight leaves Seattle at 6:30 AM.  I've only slept about 3 hrs.  I think this is travel nerves.  Do I have everything?  Should I throw in that extra jacket into the bag?  How will the ride out on Sunday go?  We'll see if I get legs cramps tomorrow.  I've only avoided them on the first day in one of the 5 previous rides.

Thanks for checking out my homepage.

Thanks

I want to give a great big thanks to everyone who has donated to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation in support of my ride.  With your help, this year is the highest total that I have ever gotten on any ride.  This is my 6th ride.  I could not have done it without your help.  Your donation helps make an impact and a difference for many. Thanks.

I'm almost ready

I'm just about ready.  I've started packing.  Decisions, decisions, how many shirts, how many pants.... They tell you not to make any big changes just before the ride, but I have.  I put a new wheel on the back of my bike.   The power tap is going on my new bike that I got last weekend.  Yeah I'm not crazy enough to ride a whole new bike that I've only been on twice (once at the shop and once doing circles in front of my house).  So for the ride I'm using the "old" bike.  Anyway, the new wheel is great.  The power tap makes a really LOUD clicking noise when it free wheels, but the new wheel is REALLY quiet when I coast.

First Century of the Year and a Record Year of Donations for Me

This past weekend in Seattle was beautiful.  We set some record highs.  I got out for a short 35 mile ride on Saturday and then on Sunday I finished 101 miles. I left home at 6:30 AM.  I like leaving early because there is very little traffic on the roads.  I went around Lake Washington, out the Cedar River Trail to Maple Valley, and around Mercer Island.  That gave me about 94 miles, so I did a little extra to get to 101.  I ran out of water a couple miles from home.  I thought, "Oh, I'm almost home. I don't need to stop."  Well..... I had to walk my bike up the last hill.  I should have stopped for some more water earlier.  I got home about 2:45 PM.  I could still feel the ride on Monday morning when I went swimming.  One person in my lane said that I looked tired.

This will be my 6th year on ALC.  This year thanks to all of you, my donors, I have raised more than ever before.  Without your support it would not have been possible.  Your donations will help many.  Your donations will make a difference.

Thanks

A weekend of riding

I took Friday off to ride because it looked like it would rain during the weekend.  Guess what, I got lucky. It didn't rain when I rode!!!!  It did rain on Sunday, but it happened after I got home.  On Friday I rode 52 miles, Saturday 98 miles and Sunday 26 miles.  Saturday I rode with with triathletes who I swim with in the morning.  They made me push a little harder than usual. Sunday I had coffee with my friend Jeff and we did a short intense ride.  This week's picture is from Jeff's porch with Lake Washington in the background.  It's a little less than 50 miles to bike around the lake.

ALC is getting close.  I took my bike in and got my brakes replaced, a new chain put on, the drive deep cleaned, etc.  My bike is no longer as quiet while riding as it was for ALC 2, but it still works fine.  I'll replace the tires this week in hopes that will lead to fewer flats on the ride.

I've begun to think about packing.  Is there something new I can do to keep my bag from weighing a ton?  Ok maybe not a ton, but less than 50 lbs?  I know the limit is 70 lbs, but I'm not willing to struggle with that much weight.  I'll try to eliminate stuff that I've brought before, but haven't used.  We'll see.

This is Seattle. Expect RAIN

Today was the last training ride that I was to lead.  I left home at 6:30 to be at the starting point by 7:00.   Several of people who usually ride with me could not ride. The weather was predicted to be drippy in the morning; so no one else showed.  That was ok.  I set out at the appointed time of 7:30 and rode at my own pace.  There was no rain when I started riding, but the rain did not stay away.  Coming down the back side of the Juanita hill, it rained pretty hard for a few minutes. I started to get cold and wet, but I thought that's ok, the rain is supposed to end and the weather is supposed to turn better.  The rain did end a few miles later.  So, I continued my route and rode down to Renton and out the Cedar River Trail hitting the 50 mile mark at Maple Valley.  The weather seemed to be improving, but as I got back to Lake Washington and looked north, I could see rain.  As the rain started falling again, it turned COLDER by a few degrees. I had faith in the weatherman's forecast!!! I was expecting the afternoon to be dry.   I should know better.  This is Seattle. (At least I brought my rain jacket.)  Since I was getting wet and cold again, I decided to skip the Mercer Island loop that I had planned and head straight home.  I got home early at 1:40 PM Yipee!!!!! and finished 84 miles (I had been hoping to do a century, but I'll take 84).  The thermometer on the deck had said 47 when I left in the morning, and by the time I got home is had risen 3 degrees to 50.  Mr Sun was on vacation today.  After rinsing and wiping down my bike, I looked at the weather forecast again.  It was chance of rain until 11 PM.

April 26th Training Ride

Karen, Martha, Martha's husband, Tim and I met at Starbucks at University Village.  The plan was to the North Lake Washington Loop which is 50 miles and add some extra to get in 65 miles.  After showing Martha and her husband the basic loop, they took off ahead of me and Karen.  Karen and I did the loop and including two climbs up Juanita hill.  I got home about 5PM and including the ride to and from the starting point I got in about 77 miles.

There is a story from the day.  There are lots of stop signs in Lake Forrest Park for driveways and a few streets.  Most of the time there is no automobile traffic at these intersections.  Many trail riders don't even slow down for the stop signs.  Being an ALC Training Ride, we stop at all stop signs, but sometimes we get sloppy.  One of today's riders (I wont' say who) came to the stop sign, called out "stopping" as is one should, and put their foot down; however the it was a "Calfornia" stop (in other words a rolling stop).  Well a sheriff was approaching the intersection.  The rider noticed the car finally and yelled "whoa" and stopped a few feet into the intersection (on the opposite side of the street from the sheriff's car.)  The sheriff gave us a cold stare.  I think the temperature dropped about 10 degrees, right there, but the sheriff yielded to us and let us pass in front of him.

It was a beautiful day and a great day for riding.

Dine Out For Life

Tonight was Dine Out for Life.  It is a fund raiser for Life Long AIDS Alliance, the AIDS organization here in Seattle.  Different Spokes had a get together at Piecorra's Pizza to celebrate the beginning of the riding season as well as gathering to support Life Long.  There were about 16 or 17 of us that gathered for dinner.  A portion of Piecorra's revenue's will be shared with Life Long.  At dinner I handed out my donation letter for AIDS/LifeCycle.  Maybe some of those at dinner will donate this year or join ALC next year.

Shortened Training Ride

A friend told me that one of the radio stations was playing "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas". It snowed last night.  There was an inch on my deck. and up north about 10 miles there was 6 inches of snow.  Last weekend the temperature got up to 78. What a change!!! Today it only got up to 45.  Karen, Martha, Martha's husband Tim, and I met at the usual spot.  Martha and her husband went ahead; so, I don't know how much of the ride they finished, but Karen and I cut our ride short.  When we met, it was cool, and there was no precipitation.  We all headed out at the appointed time of 8:30 AM.  After we got over Juanita Hill, it began to sprinkle.  The sprinkles turned into rain mixed with snow and sleet.  It would fall for a bit and then stop, and then start all over again.  Yuck!!!  I stayed warm as long as I was working, but when I stood around or coasted, I got cold.  Karen and I got around the north end of Lake Washington and rather than go all the way around the lake, we took a shortcut back across I-90.  We ended up doing about 36.5 miles and finished about 1 PM. In total I did 47 miles including riding to and from the start point.

Ride to Carnation, Saturday 04/12/08

It was like being on the ride.  What amazing weather we had yesterday.  The temperature started out in the 40s and rose up into the 70s. The official high was 78.  It was like being on the ride as opposed to being in the cool wet Northwest.  Martha and her husband also joined us at the start, but they got ahead and left us far behind.  This is the longest training ride that I've led so far.  We rode out to Carnation, Wa from Seattle, WA.  I've been to Carnation 4 times and every time has been on a bike.  I've never reached it by car.

This afternoon, I'm going to a fund raiser for Team Summit to help them reach their goal.

The ride is no only 7 weeks away.

Training Ride in California

This past weekend I went down to San Francisco to do training rides with my tent mate Mark Gillick.  On Saturday April 5th we did 51 miles.  Last year when I did this it rained and I fell leading to severe pinched  nerve problems.  But this year the ride went much better. It didn't rain and I didn't crash.  I only developed leg cramps.... darn... this happens to me on the first day of the ride too!!! I was wiped out and went to bed at 8:30.

On Sunday April 6th we got a REALLY early start.  It was just like we were on the ride. Yes, we get up in the dark on the ride.  Yes, we must be crazy!!! The Golden Gate Bridge closed from 7 AM to 11 AM for a special event; so, we had to be across the bridge before it closed.  We headed out at 6:30 AM just as the sun starts to come out and headed out to Point Reyes Station. This ride was 83 miles.  I bonked about 20 miles from the end because I wasn't eating enough, but after eating a bit, things improved.  At least this ride wasn't as exhausting as the prior days ride.

As well as spending the weekend with Mark, I got to see friends from prior rides and meet new ones.

I've passed my fund raising goal.   I want to thank everyone who has contributed to my fund raising effort.  Every contribution is greatly appreciated.

8:15 PM

A short ride to Magnolia

Because of a busy weekend, the ALC Training ride was short.  Saturday is usually the day for the long ride, but yesterday I went to a swim meet down by Olympia, WA and swam the 1,650 yard freestyle, the 50 breast, and the 100 breast events.  The 1,650 is considered the "mile" even though a mile is 1,720 yards.  I swam a nice steady pace.  Maybe I could have gone faster but it seemed to hurt enough at the time without pushing harder.  What leads me to believe I could have gone faster is that I had energy to push the last 50 and drop 6 seconds of my 50 pace.  If I had been pacing the race well, I should not have had that kind of energy left at the end.   It took me 25 minutes and 48 seconds to swim the "mile".  This is not even close to a record time, but I swim to eat rather than swim to win. The best part of the meet is seeing friends from past meets and being inspired by the older swimmers.  The oldest swimmer was 80 and a couple swimmers were in their late 70s.

The Training Ride met at the usual time of 8:00 AM.  Nicole showed up for her first training ride of the year.  She has a good excuse for not riding before today.  She has been in Antarctica working on a cruise ship.  She has done the ride twice before and is now a veteran rider.  Her sister, Hillary, is one of the cycle buddies.  She brought along her boyfriend Philip.   Since Nicole and Philip haven't been riding a short ride worked really well for them. Karen, who has showed up for most of the training rides, showed up again and the 4 of us headed over to Magnolia.  We took time to watch the small lock operate and release some boats to the sound.  It's always fun to watch.  Being a short ride, we did about 19 miles.  In total I got in about 26 miles.

Next week I'm off to SF to do a couple training rides with my friend Mark.

From U-Village to Marymoor, up to Monroe and back

I lead a training ride that wet 62 miles.  Today's ride took us to the backstreets of King County and up to Snohomish County.  We road the Burke Gilman and Sammamish Trails out to Marymoor and then headed up the backroads towards Monroe.  Just shy of Monroe, we turned and headed back to Woodinville where we caught the Sammamish Trail to return back to our starting point.  Today's weather started out cold in the low 30s but warm up into the 50s in the afternoon.  Including the extra miles that I road to and from the starting point, I did 67 miles.  Since this was a training ride, the effort for me was pretty easy.  I'll probably get on the trainer tomorrow to get in some more intense aerobic work.

8:10 PM

Mercer Island plus some extra

The forecast was for showers today.  I woke up at 5 AM and it was pouring.... yuck.  But by the time I headed out the door it stopped.  I met Paul, Lara, and Suzanne at Starbucks and we headed out for the ride.  We were supposed to go around the north end of Lake Washington including going around the south end of Mercer Island.  We left U-Village and headed to Mercer Island.  One rider mentioned that the sun might show, but the opposite happened.  It rained.  Lara, who just moved up from California said, "I can't believe I'm out here biking."  Despite the bad weather we did see lots of riders.  So, rather than go around the top of Lake Washington we backtracked.  At the park on Mercer Island we saw a few runners.  I asked how far they were going.  They said 20 miles!!! I said I'd rather bike it than run it, and one of the runners (I think it must have been the girl friend of one of the guys) said, "I'd rather drive it."  Hmmm not a great day for running either.  When we had gotten back to U-Village we had done 30 miles.  By the time we got back to U Village it looked like the rain might hold off. So I did some extra miles by going up to Woodenville and hitting Juanita Hill twice.  In total I did 70 miles today.

A short ALC training ride

Yesterday I swam in a meet and therefore did not ride, but on Sunday I led a short ALC training ride.  We went 19 miles.  Karen, Suzanne, and Paul went riding with me.  We went over to and around Magnolia.  We were supposed to go over to Mercer Island, but there was a 1/2 marathon there today and so riding on the island was out.  Paul and I did extra miles so in total, including the ride to and from U-Village I road 53 miles.

Around Lake Washington

Today I met Karen and we bike around Lake Washington.  We did 48 miles together.  I did a total of 56 altogether including the distance to and from the ride start.  It was Karen's first time around the lake.  The weather was threatening, but the rain held off.

The Chilly Hilly

Mike and I got together and did the Chilly Hilly Ride.  It is 33 miles around Bainbridge Island.  We took a really early ferry (6:10AM) in order to avoid the crowds.  The route wasn't well marked and we took a wrong turn and ended close to the finish early.  By accident we had taken the "short cut" that drops about 13 miles off the route.  So we backtracked and resumed the course.  We ended up doing 35 miles.  The weather was much nicer than last year.  No rain and a little "warmer".  "Warmer" is all relative.  We did get a little drizzle, but it was really nothing to speak of.

Unviersity Village to Marymoor Park via the Burke Gilman

This Saturday's ride went from U-Village out to Marymoor park via the Burke Gilman and Samammish Trails.  No one showed up; so I pushed harder than if it had been a training ride.  It showed that I'm still not taking in enough liquids and salts.  I almost got cramps in my legs.  Tomorrow I'm supposed to go on the Chilly Hilly Ride; so I better keep working on my nutrition/hydration.  Today I went 55 miles averaging 15 mph.  My heart rate hasn't been worth mentioning on the training rides, but today I manage an average pulse of 137 over the entire 55 miles.

Ride with Karen around the south end of Lake Washington

This week the training ride started at Seward Park.  It went north and across the I-90 bridge to Mercer Island, around the south end along Mercer Way and then over towards Factoria.  The ride then wrapped around the south end of Lake Washington to return to Seward Park.  It was a nice day.  We kept an easy pace of 10.4 mph.  Even though it was a pretty easy ride, I felt dehydrated for the rest of the day.  I need to drink more.

A ride up the Burke and Juanita Hill

This week I rode down and met Karen at Montlake Bicycle Shop.  We went up the Burke Gilman Trail and up to the top of Juanita Hill.  We turned around and headed back to the shop.  When we got back I showed her the route to get around the Arboretum.  I did 31 miles with Karen and a total of 45 for the day.  It was a relaxed pace of about 10 mph.  My mileage is getting back up.

Another ride up the Burke

Yesterday, a new rider named Karen showed up for the training ride. We were suppose to ride over to Magnolia, but it was sprinkling.  Since the ride to Magnolia includes riding on the streets and a few hills, we decided to stick to the bike trail instead.  It was a good thing because after 10 miles, it started to rain.  We got in 24 miles doing the same ride as the week before.  I went home a slightly different way, so I got in 35 miles this week instead of 33 mies.  I prefer to bike when it isn't raining, but I need to get the miles under my belt.

Ride up the Burke Gilman

Today's training ride went up the Burke Gilman.  There is water or perhaps sewer work going on up in Kenmore and there was a slight detour.  After going 12 miles (to the bridge underpass), we turn around and came back.  Including the ride down to the start and back home, I did 33 miles.  I didn't drink or eat much.  I'll have to work on that on the next ride.

Ride to Renton, Sunday, January 13, 2008

On Sunday, I met Bill Reeder, and we biked from his house overlooking Lake Union, down across the I-90 bridge, to Renton and lunch, and back up the west side of Lake Washington.  Did I mention lunch?  We stopped at Gene Coulon Park and I had a great mushroom hamburger at Kid Valley.  HMMMMMMM.  It was a BEAUTIFUL day.  The sun was out.  Ok, it WAS January; so instead of 80 it was 50, but it was great weather for riding.  We did 37.7 miles.  It was like being a kid.  A ride just for the fun of it.

Today (January 16th) I decided to write up the ride from Sunday and found that Bill had made a donation to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Thank you Bill!!!

First Seattle ALC Training Ride for 2008

Today was the First Seattle ALC Training Ride for 2008.  I had posted that rain cancels.  I went down to TiCycles, hopefullly to meet other riders.  In front of TiCycles were big dumpsters and the store was empty.  It was just a shell.  The door was opened so I asked a guy inside whether TiCycles was remodelling, but it turns out TiCycles closed about 3 weeks ago.  He said that they would put a new bike shop there.  It will be interesting to see what goes there.  It wasn't raining at the gather time, but no one showed up (I wasn't surprised).  Though it was threatening to rain, I headed up the Burke Gilman Trail.  When I stopped at Tracy Owen Station/Log Boom Park, I looked up the trail towards Kenmore and all I saw was RAIN.  Yech, so I turned around and headed back.  The rain followed me back, but fortunately I only encountered sprinkles.  I did 18 miles which is a bit short of my plan; so, when I got home I put my bike on the trainer and spun for an hour.

Training Ride Leader and spinning

Well, I'm certified to be a Training Ride Leader (TRL). I've committed to leading a few training rides for ALC 7; however, in Seattle, its difficult to plan dry rides in the winter. In past years, I've gotten several people to go the rides. I've been spinning twice a week even I haven't gotten outside to ride in a while. This week's power cycling classes were especially intense. We we were working power on the hills, but apparently I was working too hard, because the instructor came over and told me to turn down the resistance. At the end, she had us doing hill sprints towards the end of class. That's tough!! Then on Thursday, the instructor, John, had a series of "endurance" power sets where my heart rate got over 170 at least 4 times. That was brutal.

I begin once again

What a year!! Two months prior to ALC6, I developed issues with bone spurs and arthritis. I feared that I wouldn't be able to ride, but my condition improved and I was able to ride all the miles. It also turned out to be my best fund raising year. Maybe because I didn't ask everyone the previous year. So here it is, fall is about to begin. I've got a new rider number and I'm looking forward to participating in ALC7.
