I'm Riding to End AIDS

Hey, my friend, the ride is really coming soon! Support is very welcome!

On June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle(ALC7) from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It's a 7-day, 545-mile charity bike ride to provide life saving services to people living with HIV and AIDS. Last year ALC6 raised 11 million dollars. The beneficiary of ALC7 is the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, which provides vital services and programs designed to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS and to reduce the number of new infections that occur each year. They advocate at the federal, state and local levels to ensure that hundreds of thousands of people affected by HIV and AIDS have access to care, treatment, housing, and prevention services, and that they benefit from related research efforts. San Francisco AIDS Foundation also has its global affiliate program -- the Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation. Pangaea has played a significant role in developing and implementing HIV treatment access initiatives in several countries, including my home country China, Uganda, South Africa, and Rwanda.

Last year at the try-out ride, what the ride leader said has always inspired me: "...when you have a flat tire on the road, when you get lost, or when you are nervous, just stop, take a deep breath and relax. Think about it, this is not about you, this is about fighting the epidemic, about the good cause..." the ride isn't about me, it is about the people who are in need. There is no comparison between the difficulty I face for the ride and the hard work to overcome the disease. To prepare for the ride, I have invested more than $3,000 of my own to gear up and spent hundreds of hours training on weekends and weekdays. Every minute though, I am having fun with it.

I am asking for YOUR support so that I can reach my fund raising goal of $5,000.  There is no amount too little or too large. Give what you can. You may not be able to invest the time and resources to participate in the ride, but I am. I have many student sponsors who don't have much extra, but they have given what they can.  If I only bring AIDS awareness to you, I am thankful for that too. All donations are 100% tax deductible as the San Francisco Aids Foundation is a non profit organization. You will receive a letter for tax purposes.

Your generous donation will help save lives and make a difference to countless people.

Thank you,

Wiley Wang

All about hills

As the ride is getting closer, I try to train myself more effectively with short rides (20--40 miles). Kings Mountain Rd is perfect for climbing, thanks to Doug, it is really a nice route with few cars. The peak of the sky line might be around 2,300ft. It is really chilly on top of the hill, especially running down hill 30 miles/hour, Burrr. My training is mostly over, time to load carb!

Bike to work day!

Today is "Bike to work day". Living a mile away, I should do it everyday, or walk to work everyday, hehe.

After work, I rode bike with Doug. The route we did was similar to my everyday training route, except it has nicer bike lanes. I learned a couple of new bike trails from him, will definitely try out this weekend.

Climbing

It was a day of climbing. I met my buddy Mike (1579) at one of the trail entrance close by Cristal Springs. After we started, it was a non-stop climb for about 10 miles, highest elevation 2,500ft. I was not panting as hard, and feel it was manageable. We had fun riding, and it was really nice to chat with other bikers, they were so friendly.

How fast do professionals ride?

Cananda road is such a popular route, that on a windy cold afternoon, you can see bikers racing by. It is fun to see how athelets train themself. A scooter (coach maybe?) followed by a bike racer was just flying by, I was pedding hard. "go get him!", an elderly man said, oh yeah, I tried. hehe...

301 -- Send off party

Today, I attended the send off party at Sports Basement in the city. I went to two clinics that were really helpful. The packing demonstration and fund raising clinic.s

It will be 7 days on the road and camping out. Lots of techniques were taught about camping, packing and clothing. Of course, that means more gear to get, the shopping line lasted for an hour after the store closed.

I was really inspired at the fund raising clinic. Well, I shall leave it at that, it's secret to try out on you, hehe.

Fund raising in a bar

I wouldn't have imagined myself volunteering for a beer bust. With the team, we pulled off several successful fund raising beer busts, including this Sunday. How was I able to yell out "beer bust" and to ask people to buy raffle tickets? I just told myself it was not about me, and got over it! hehe.

My first centry! 111miles

Saturday, I rode with a training group from Mountain View to Gilroy and back, 111miles. I also passed 1,000 miles training mileage on my new bike.

The ride was nice, with some hills. We went through cities, parks and country side. I stopped by a fruit stand, bought fresh strawberries and woofed them down. Yummy.

I woke up this morning and don't feel as tired, and my legs are not as sore. I am so looking forward to the big ride in June, almost ready!

Riding everyday

I've been riding everyday for 10 days, 30 miles/day during week days, then long rides during weekends. It was windy and cold this afternoon. Time to recharge, I will take a break tomorrow to meet team member in the city. A fund raising beer bust is scheduled for the coming Sunday. I will be volunteering.

Day on the Ride

Everything is set up to the way for the real ride. It is a good chance to show new riders like me how the real ride is like, and how to ride with a huge group of people, 600 for the day. Days of practicing on hills has shown progress on me. They are not as intimidating as they used to be. The whole ride was about 83 miles, beautiful scenaries. I was excited the whole route.

Nice spaghetti dinner by the way.

Cyclist Expo

It is one of the event that brings many people in. I first did the 44 miles ride. It was a good ride. I pretty much kept up with the group pace, and got to know Paul and Raybel.

After the ride, got myself a new helmet, a pair of cool sun glasses and a AIDS life cycle 6 jersey. At the booth, I met Lare, a friend of mine. He is the founder of
First CAREE. They give out free clothing to first time AIDS life cycle riders. I got a long sleve red jersey and a jacket. Thank you Lare. :)

Another big news: I joined in the Team Bear. Now I will be riding with my ears!

Some training experience

I've been doing training with my buddy Mike (rider 1579 here). Definitely learned a lot from him. I remembered for the same hill, the first time I could only ride about 5-6m/h, the second time, my chain got stuck, I fell and broke my left knee, the third time, I was still behind Mike, but kept up closely, we were doing 9-11 m/h. I felt great to see myself making progress, more to go!

A special day!

As a first timer, so many exciting things are happening for my training and fund raising. I should keep up with my blog.

This was a special day, when I posted my message on the Chinese community website (mitbbs.com). I received about $500 in 24 hours from friends I've never met in person. Thank you for my Chinese brothers and sisters, you surprised me nicely with your generosity.
