Why Am I Riding? AgainI am riding again because last year with the help and support of my loving friends, patients, family, and medical community I was able to have an extraordinary experience, raise over $13,000, and reach the incredible goal of training for and cycling 550 miles in seven days. Help me do it again.I am riding because AIDS is not over. People still get sick and die from AIDS. As a physician specializing in AIDS care, I see this disease everyday. The care of HIV infected individuals gives my life purpose, which is about healing and empowering others with love, knowledge, compassion and exemplary living. I am riding because prevention and education is still important. I ride for those unaware who are still being infected with HIV. I ride for them to increase visibility and awareness. I especially ride for my patients who live with HIV and AIDS and the barriers they encounter. Their ability to triumph over these obstacles inspires me every day to provide the best care I can. I am riding to let pharmaceutical companies know their work is important and that I support them right back. We need their research and resources to keep coming so that we all will be here for a vaccine and ultimately the cure. I also rode last year because it was the year I turned 40, a major milestone for me. I wanted to prove something to myself, get in shape and take on something utterly life changing and transformative. Now it is to continue on that path. Help me do it again. Finally, I ride in memory of the so many wonderful, beautiful, talented people we have lost. I especially ride for my two lovers I have personally lost, Scott Speaker in 1994 and Christopher Jewkes in 1999. I love and miss them very much. I ride with their memory with each and every pedal. Money for HIV and AIDS Service Organizations has become more limited. Government funding is limited and many organizations have to cut their budgets. Because of these budget cuts, many AIDS organizations rely heavily on events such as the AIDS Lifecycle. This is why I urge you to donate. I have set my fundraising goal at $15,000. The ride is June 1-7th, 2008, seven days from San Francisco to Los Angeles, a total of 545 miles. Please donate at AIDSLIFECYCLE.ORG, rider #2070, or by completing the donation form.

Lots of love, Kunal Greg Loome (6/03/08 2:01PM): Shawn, In just the span of - wow - eight short years, I've seen the Change, my friend. Life has taken more unpredicted turns than a tourist on Lombard Street; nevertheless, some of my beliefs have been put to the test and remain as true today as I held them to be when we first met. I remember nights at dinner, cinema in the Mission..or a speaker you'd once heard then igniting a rep's flame to blaze a national effort that would benefit the resilience of HIV physicians everywhere. On this day, the ride - or perhaps, a destined leg of a longer journey - begins. My support can only come to you in words. So with deep gratitude, for all you have done to support me, your friend & patient, just as much as you're out riding for all your patients and friends, our shared brothers and sisters and all those in need of hope, I sincerely thank you. I have seen the Change, Shawn. In you - from someone I knew was was special, who I did what I could when I could and who has returned it 10-fold to me, and who exhibits every strength of not just resilience, but heroism. Best of rides, Dr. Hassler. Have fun. Sueanne McNeil (6/03/08 9:40AM): you look fabulous! Keep going strong! It goes without saying that your the best doctor and I consider you a close friend as well. It is a pleasure to support you for the ride. Thanks so much for all that you do. Much Love, Kevin Martin Pugh (5/27/08 9:30PM): Shawn.... Words cannot express how grateful I am to have you in my life. I have heard it too so many times from so many people who have been through so much personal strife and pain, but have known that you are allways there for them, a rare caring, loving spirit. As I realize an important personal empowering acheivement of working in your office for 10years I pause with great sadness of all the beautiful faces of the angels I have known and loved through those years who are now in Heaven. I think of the times when I was so sick myself with AIDS, and how those faces, together with your love and empowerment helped me pull through. Think of those faces Shawn looking down on you and giving you strength as you ride. I know Scott and Chris will be. I love you so much. I look forward to my days at work, to seeing you walk through the door every morning. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to give love and compassion. I am so very very proud of you for riding again, you are a shining beacon of inspiration. We ALL love you. XXXX Jim W. Fore (5/27/08 9:15PM): Hey Shawn! I am very lucky to have you as a doctor. Michael Jon Call (5/21/08 2:19PM): As if you don't do enough to make the world a better place...now this. To say I am proud would be cliche', to say I am impressed would be trite, to say I am ispired would be as close as our limited language permits. Have a good ride, don't fall down and KEEP SINGING! Lorena Norman (5/20/08 5:31PM): So proud of you! Good luck.... I wish all doctors aspired to your level of individualized care. And on behalf of the community, thanks for doing the ride. Steven and David (5/09/08 6:42PM): Shawn, we have known you for a long time now. David often tells me that I am your oldest patient. I have to correct him and say that I am one of your longest term patients, but not the oldest. You saved both our lives and gave us hope. We know that we are among the most fortunate people on earth, because you are our doctor and our friend. Knowing that you really care about us is more meaningful than you can know. You are a true inspiration to us, and we are very proud of you for your accomplishment in last year's ride and your doing it again this year. Thank you for your wonderful, loving care; and thank you most of all for your friendship. Love, Steven and David Eric Woodard (5/06/08 9:07PM): Wow.... as a fellow physician I am truly envious at the steadfast love and support you have from your patients, as well as family and friends. I always think that love and compassion are returned to you ten-folds when you give it out. (Except maybe with my patients) However, you are the poster boy for that sentiment. Best of luck to you on this next journey. I am very proud of you in all that you've accomplished. Who knows, maybe I'll ride with you next year! Well, don't hold your breath, but if not, I'll double my donation....how about that? Armistead Maupin (5/06/08 12:58PM): Your loving spirit and commitment to good are evident in everything you do. I'm so proud -- and grateful -- that you're my doctor. P.S. You're looking really hot these days. Jay De Guia (5/05/08 8:38PM): Shawn, You are such an inspiration to me on so many levels. I am honored to support your goal. Best of luck and thanks for everything you do for me and the community. Yours, Jay Michael Wolford (5/03/08 8:28PM): May the wind be at your back, the butt balm applied liberally and the porta-potty lines in your favor. Be safe! Franc (5/01/08 5:03PM): You are the BEST doctor!!! Forever! (((( HUG )))) Michael Barrett (5/01/08 4:25PM): Shawn, I'm so proud to call you my dear friend. For all you've done for me in the past and for all you continue to do, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your friendship has been steadfast, following me from the west coast to the east coast and back again. You're always there when I need you, and you'll always remain a very special part of my life. Thank you for riding for all of us. Much love, Michael. Kunal Mukherjee (4/30/08 9:23AM): Shawn, You came into my life through my dearest friend Chris Jewkes a lifetime ago and I want to let you know how proud I am of you. He would be too. Your determination and dedication to the ride and benefiting those in need is inspiring indeed. The messages on your site are a testament to the level of care and compassion with which you nurture your patients in their health and well being. All the best on the ride and keep pedaling! love, Kunal Paul Borja (4/27/08 12:24PM): Shawn...your bike ride will most likely be a deep meditative experience. In those moments when you are riding alone with your own Self, I hope you experience a reflection of what we, your friends and loved ones see in you... your compassion, your empathy, your goodness and your brilliant work as a human being. Such giving and talent can only come from a very real divine place in you. Thank you for doing what you do for me, and for all of us who continue to live because of you. You actions in this life are truly heroic and virtuous. And although you probably don't see yourself in this light, it is proof yet again that what we see in you is the real thing. Have a great ride and know that you are deeply loved. BRYAN STEWART (TRAINER) (4/26/08 11:07PM): Hi Shawn, welcome back to the hard seat!I know how hard you have trained week in and week out at the gym , but we both know that is the easy part.Making a commitment to the cause is the difficult one. This ride is the final stage in the Tour De France, and you are wearing the yellow jersey, keep winning !! your dear friend Bryan. l Peter/Toro (4/24/08 12:02PM): Shawn - I am not only proud of this particular effort, but more than anything I feel blessed that you are my personal physician. You deeply care for patients and you are a living example of the ultimate foundation of the medicine field. Thanks for ALL you do. Edgardo Rodriguez (4/22/08 8:07PM): Shawn; Look at your self. You are a great asset for our HIV/AIDS community, we Love having you as our Doctor. Congratulations. I know you have the courage to ride again. I got a new book and one of the quotes seems appropriate for this occasion and made think of you; "Maturity has nothing to do with your outer life experiences. It has something to do with your inward journey, experiences of the inner. Maturity is another name for realization: You have come to the fulfillment of your potential, it has become actual. The seed has come on a long journey, and has blossomed". Good luck , God bless you! Daniel Burns (4/22/08 2:02PM): Shawn, Although I don't have HIV I am greatful that you are my DR. You take the time to care about your patients and make sure they get the best possiable care. Thank you for your hard work with the HIV community. Hugs, Daniel David Ruyle (4/21/08 8:08PM): I couldn't ask for a more caring and compassionate physician. You are one of a kind...such a gift. I am truly, truly grateful. With everything you give to this community, to see you give even more in this way is inspiring. In fact you were one of the inspirations behind my decision to do the ALC this year. Best of luck with your training and I look forward to seeing you on the road on in camp. Happy Trails! Ron Palmer (4/21/08 5:52AM): Dr. Hassler! I am so proud of you! Best wishes, Ron. Matt Garrigan (4/18/08 7:21PM): Shawn, I write this as tears of gratitude stream down my face. I have been living with these diseases for 23yrs now. Good luck on the ride! Krandall Kraus (4/13/08 11:17AM): As if the loving care and support you give those of us with AIDS isn't enough, you also knock yourself out to ride to raise money for AIDS. I have been living with this disease for 26 years and you have been caring for me for almost half that time. Without you I most definitely would not be alive. I wish I didn't live solely on SSDI so I could contribute tons of money to your ride. As it is I can only contribute my gratitude, my emotional support, and, above all, my love for you and for your exemplary life. We should all try to live as you live. Have fun--and stay well. (Hundreds of us need you back here to keep us going.) MIchael Pitalo (4/11/08 7:47PM): Thanks for getting out there and riding. I know it is a great quest, and I am so proud of you for doing it. Your support to the community has been monumental, and now, even more so. Thanks Shawn. Stacey Vogel (4/11/08 9:01AM): Shawn - This is such a great event and commitment.
