I'm Riding to End AIDS

From June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

This one week ride from SF to LA is my challenge for 2008. Why am I doing this? I love challenges, plus my friends Roy Garcillano #1919 (www.myTropa.com), Cesar Portillo #2141, Susan Hagstrom #2053, and Nerinna Valera #2324 (www.nerinna.com) are riding along with me. Am I crazy? No, because I know other people who are crazier than me.

Besides my world traveling during my year long sabbatical, 2007 has been year with a few endurance races: the Escape from Alcatraz (June), my 1st Century in Napa (August), and my marathon in Sacramento (December). I will definitely have to log in a lot of riding hours, of course. If you would like to ride together, let me know. Even a leisurely ride in the City or in the East Bay would be great! I would love company. Plus we would do a healthy activity together.

Help me support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation by giving what you can. You can give a monthly donation if you'd like. Maybe instead of spending the money you would on a night out, donate that amount to end AIDS. You will feel really good about your small sacrifice.

We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past! Thank you, salamat, gracias, grazie, mahalo, shukran, merci...

I would also like to dedicate the 545 mile ride to those who have died of AIDS. If you know someone personally who died of AIDS, please give me his/her name, and I will honor him/her on my ride.

Bike commuting

In the last past 5 weeks, I have only driven my car 5 times.  I have biked/BART/biked around or biked/bike shuttle/biked to work or just road my bike.  Funny...I don't like driving my car plus it's easier to find parking.  I also just noticed that unleaded gas is now $4!  I enjoy the early morning rides to get to work, but it takes a lot of planning, figuring out my change of clothes, packing the night before, and giving myself enough time to commute and arrive on time (as some of you all ready know I don't run "Filipino Time".)

My car has been sitting at my mom's house for 3 days now because I needed it for rehearsal in South City on Thursday.  Today, because of my packed schedule - Longfellow's Carnival, Sports Basement, 1st birthday party, Pre-Wedding party, and POMO show (www.kularts.org), I will pick up my car from mom's to get around.  First, I need to get myself ready for my bike/BART/bike commute.

Ride to the top of Mt. Diablo

On Saturday starting at 8am, I rode about 68 miles from Orinda BART to the top of Mt. Diablo and back.  I was happy to see Susan again on the ride because she is a good pacer for me.  We also saw Sergio, a rider we met last the week before.  My shoulders and neck were a bit sore.  I was a bit tired and wasn't too sure if the soreness was from my 3 day of commuting from home to work or from the Modern Dance class I took Thursday.  We were doing moving handstands...so much fun.

The ride when starting Mt. Diablo from the North Gate was an 11% grade, and the last part was 18% grade.  Oh, my quads were burning the last bit, and I'm happy I didn't clip out of my bike.  The last 10 minutes before the top I encounter gnats flying in my direction.  Gross!  I had to keep my mouth close and zip up my vest.  Somehow, that distracted me from the climb up the mountain.  Wow!  What a wonderful view from the top! A 360 degree view!

Susan and I shared a lunch and met up with Sergio.  The first group left by the time we sat down.  Later, the 3 of us rolled out.  When we got to the Iron Horse trail, speedy Sergio left us.  Susan and I had to ride carefully because of the kids who were riding along the trail.  It's great to see the little ones on the road and doing something active.  We finally finished at 4pm.  We missed the BART train, but it gave us 20 minutes to stetch before the next train came.

Neapolitan tan

I'm getting these various tone of tans on various parts of my exposed body.  I have a new tan from the "Day of  a Ride."  On only my right thigh is my "neapolitan tan" because of the 3 different shades of brown...1. my natural skin color, 2. little more tan skin color, and 3. a tanner skin color.

2 days of commuting plus Hoolie Hoop and dance crosstraining

For the past 2 mornings, I have be commuting from the Berkeley home to work on my mountain bike with 2 panniers.  I leave my house by 6 am and ride to MacArtur BART to meet up with the 6:20 am Bike Shuttle.  THe shuttle crosses the Bay Bridge and drops the bikers at Transbay Terminal on First Street.  I take my sweet time to work.  I say sweet time because there are a lot of lights, but I try not to race because I still end up at a red light.  Basically, the total bike ride time is about one hour for 11 miles.

Yesterday after work I took a free dance class called Hooliehoop.  Nice crosstraining!  Now I'm heading via bike to a dance studio in Emeryville for a modern dance class.

81 miles "Day on the Ride" plus 8 more miles

On Saturday, April 26, I rode 81 miles with AIDS LifeCycle called “Day on the Ride.”  I did an addition 8 miles round trip from my original starting point.  I rode through Marin to Cheese Factory and back to Golden Gate Park under the hot sun and some headwinds.  My poor quads, neck, and shoulders are hating me for a few days, plus I got a little bit pinkish.

I saw Cesar at the start, and he gave me some Bloks because I wasn't prepared that day.  I usually have my food in a bottle, Perpetuem.  I had to drop my homework for my last day of teaching art/writing workshop class at de Young, and then I started the ride on my own.  At the first Rest Stop, I found Susan, a former Jane.  After that stop, we stayed together the whole way.  Luckily, we were about the same pace, but she's actually faster in the hills.  I finally tried the Butt Butter at the turn around.  Very interesting feel!

We finally got back to the start at about 4pm.  We had a short, but needed, massages, and we munched on some salad and spaghetti.  I was so hungry because I didn't really eat much on the ride.  I had 1/4 of a bagel and 3/4 of my peanut butter and banana sandwich.  I didn't even eat the many snacks that I packed in my back pockets that came from the first rest stop.

The next day, Jason and I rode a few miles to a dinner in the TL.  I don't know if my body would have allowed me to ride additional long miles.  Imagine, this was only one day of the 7-day ride from SF to LA.  Would I be able to do this for 7 days in a row?  Scarey... I need more mileage!

Summary of activities since January 2008

Friday-Monday, January 25-28 – I helped uncle with the fence at the Carrsion house.

February – My sister and I were finding new tenants for the front unit.

Saturday, February 9 – I did 20 mile bike ride with Ner in Berkeley up Tunnel Road through Tilden Park.  Check out the YouTube footage: http://nerinna.bigfolioblog.com/month/feb08. After we got some yummy pizza and gelato in the Gourmet Ghetto.

Sunday, February 10 – I rode 34 miles with Ner and two Tropa guys, Roy and Auggie.  Ner wasn't very prepared and just wore shorts in the cold area of Page Mill/Canada Road.   Great ride with 2 Tropa experts!  www.mytropa.com.  After Ner and I visited Jason at his Bike Rodeo in Stanford.

Monday-Friday, February 11-15 - I got sick by that deadly flu.  After work, I had to go home and sleep the rest of the day.  My students and I had a field trip to the Randall Museum, and I was falling asleep at one of the presentations.  I'm not a bad teacher.  I was very sick.

Saturday, February 16 - Jason had a Family Bike Rodeo in Sausalito so I took a leisurely loop around the area on my mountain bike.  It was so nice to just ride without thoughts of how many miles or hours I had to be on the bike.

Sunday, February 17 - I rode from Berkeley to Hercules via San Pablo Ave to attend Dyllan's 4th birthday.  She invited her younger guests to ride their bikes in her neighborhood.  I had to wear my spandex most of the party because Amihan who had my change of clothes arrived later than I did.

Monday, February 18 - Lisa and I rode on BART from the East Bay to Embarcadero and rode to meet Ner at Sports Basement.  We planned for a climbing tour of Mt. Tam.  First, we saw the start of the Tour of California in Sausalito.  Ner was mesmerized by a rider who had strong muscular "legs with rocks."  We noticed some riders were smaller than me with their skinny legs and arms (Hahaha, their arm warmers were loose).  Through my eyes, they were not very attractive.

Saturday, February 23 - I rode with Jason in the rain, and I wore my new rain gear.  He's helping me prepare to ride for all seasons.

Maybe Feb. or March (I can't remember)- Started my bike commute via Bike Shuttle from MacArthur BART to the Transbay Terminal (instead of taking my bike on BART).  The great thing is that the ride only cost $1.  I have to leave my house by 6 am and ride my bike to catch the 6:20 am shuttle.  Then from Downtown SF, my commute is another 45 minutes on my mountain bike with pannier bags.  Getting stronger, right?

Friday, March 7 - I attended the CABE Conference in San Jose.  I ran a few miles around downtown San Jose.

Tuesday, March 18 - I rode my bike and met Ner at Little Star Pizza.  Yummy Chicago style pizza as good as Zachary's!  Then Jason met us and we headed to Rick and Rob's birthday party.  Later, Jason and I rode to his house.  City miles on my mountain bike with panniers!

Saturday, March 22 - I rode with Paulette to the PacWest Annual Practice Triathlon and Team BBQ at McNear's Beach.  I wanted to do the tri, but I didn't want to swim.  I haven't swum since October.  I opted to do the trail run.  I thought the trail I was doing was going to be about an hour, but I ended up finishing at 1:30.  This was my longest run since my marathon this past December.

Monday-Thursday, March 24-27 - Jason and I went on our 4-day 160 mile Bike Tour on his tandem bike.  We only test rode it once without our gear.  We must have carried an extra 60 pounds of bike and gear with lots of headwind on our tour.  I enjoyed pedaling and not having to think.  Thanks, Jason, for training with me!
Day 1 SF to Samuel P. Taylor Park, Lagunitas (camping)
Day 2 Lagunitas to Bodega Dunes (camping)
Day 3 Bodega Dunes to Olema (B&B YES!) with some rain
Day 4 Olema to SF

Sunday, March 30 - I rode with ALC to from GG Park to the top of Camino Alto in Marin.  After, I attend the Cyclist Expo and bought some bike goodies.

Thursday-Sunday, March 3-6 - I traveled with Gail to New York.  I did lots of walking and using the subway.  One night I made a mistake of wearing my heels.  Luckily, the shoe store closed at 11 pm and had a chance to by flats.  On Sunday, I did a quick walk through half of Central Park.  Lots of adrenaline kicked in when leaving NYC because Gail and I just made it on time to the airport gates.

Friday, April 11 - I jumped rope with my students at Jump Rope for Heart at Longfellow Elementary School.  Cross training!

Saturday, April 12 - I rode with ALC Bride of CAT 2 from Sports Basement to Lagunitas and back.  Plus I had extra miles from my home to Ashby BART and from Embarcadero BART to Sports Basement.

Thursday, April 17 - I attended an ALC Meet and Greet in Berkeley.

Saturday, April 19 - I woke up at 5 am to go to Ner's house.  Cesar, Ner, and I were supposed to leave at 5:30 am to go to Sea Otter Classic in Monterey.  We loaded up our 3 bikes in Ner's Outback.  We made it to Monterey around 8:00 am with a detour because Ner and Cesar didn't use the directions I gave them.  There were lots of MTB riders.  We cheered with Roy to welcome some Tropa riders from the Cross Country MTB.  Exciting!  We also did some shopping.   After, we ate Thai food, but we really wanted to eat at "Pho King."  We traveled with 3 bikes and didn't get to ride.

Monday-Thursday, April 14-17 - I didn't drive, but BART and biked.

Sunday, April 20 - Jason and I rode to Marin and back to SF.  Now that he has better bike shorts he can go for miles now.  This is his longest single ride in several years. Go Jason!

Monday-Tuesday, April 21-22 - I biked right after teaching at Longfellow to SFSU to interview our new staff for Aim High (www.aimhigh.org).

Ride to Golden Gate Park and Palace of Fine Arts

I rode with Jason to the Rose Garden in Golden Gate Park for his Dirt Criterium Race.  Jay met us on his ube fixie bike.  It's great to see a race that isn't so stressful unlike the races I have done.  Folks were riding for the fun of it.  The riders had to start with a can of beer and when arriving at the Polo Fields , do a shot of Tequila to avoid the lap.  Jay and I chased the riders all the way to the Polo Field and lost them.  We headed back to the start.  Poor Jay rode uphill with Jason's heavy backpack on his fixie.  He's very strong.  We saw riding up to do his next lap.  Jay and I hung out where we would get a good shot of the riders.  I found the mode the camera for taking continuous photos, and Jay was my model for the 16 shot.  Jason called us a few minutes later, and he already finished his ride.  Jay and I had to carry our bikes up a steep dirt rode to meet the riders.  I didn't know I was going to do cyclecross with my rode bike.  I went to greet Jason, and he said he won the race.  He was the Champion of the race.  Yeah! And his last race was 13 years ago!  Jason received a cute blue Swobo jersey, size small.  Great event, plus it was free!

We then headed to Velo Rouge Cafe for a quick snack.  Jason and I then rode to the Palace of Fine Arts to watch the Ethnic Dance Festival.  I enjoyed watching the many cultural dances.  After a Thai dinner, we rode back to the Sunset.

Unexpected 71 miler ride (Berkeley to Crockett)

My plan was to do a 40 miler ride with Lisa and Ann.  I was suppose to bail out because I was suppose to watch the Ethnic Dance Auditions with Amihan and the girls, plus our former dance company was competing.  I left my house at 7:30am and finally got home at 4:00pm.  We rode to Crockett via Inspiration Point, Pig Farm Hill, Martinez and the Carquinez Straits Regional Park.  Ann bailed at the regional park at about 40 miles.  I was feeling good and decided I wouldn't go watch the auditions.  Lisa and I continued and after the park, we had to find a spot to relieve ourselves.  We didn't want to hide in the bushes because we didn't want all the mud in our bike shoe cleats.  We had to just chance that we might flash folks passing.  We rode about two miles out or so we found a potty (good to know for future rides).  We shared a yummy chicken pesto sandwich at a Crockett deli.  I had to eat because I only had a bar for breakfast.  After lunch, we decided to follow the ride back without going up Wildcat Canyon and took the BART from Orinda.  I'm surprised that I did 71 miles, and I didn't really plan to.  It's amazing that my body allowed me to do this long ride.  I enjoyed the clear day, lovely scenery, and company.  Oh, this also made up for my ride from a week ago.

It's important for me to crosstrain with dance.  I took the Fusion Rhythms at ODC.  I had a good sweat.

Plans for Ride and Yoga

Today I had jury duty so I stayed home until I had to call in for my appointment.  Luckily, I get didn't call in, and I'm good for a whole year.  I was busy getting my car service and catching up with house and work stuff.  At one point, I decided to finally leave the house and do errands on my bike.  As I was running down my stairs, I slipped and fell on my ass and my left elbow.  I also karate chopped one step and broke it.  Well, I learned never to run in slippery socks on my stairs.  My elbow has a very ugly greenish tint with purple.  I was also planning to go to a free yoga class at 7pm.  I tried downward dog and decided it wouldn't be smart to try to do a yoga class when I'm bruised.  I ended up picking my car at 5pm and doing a few of my planned errands.

Spin class with Ner and Cesar

I forgot my tap shoes so no crosstraining today.  I met Ner and Cesar at the 8:30 Spin class at 24 Hour Fitness.  I did an extra one hour cardio before the class.  Intense class, but too bad the instructor was in a bad mood.

1st Tandem Bike Ride

I had my 1st tandem bike ride today with Jason.  It was a new experience of not having control of the bike where one would have to trust the person on the front seat.  We rode from Pacheco Ave. to Noriega Ave., including some uphills.  We had a yummy Korean dinner at Pine Restaurant with his friends and rode back to his place.

Fun and Fundraising Party in Berkeley

I had a wonderful time with folks who came to support Roy, Ner, Cesar, and me on our journey towards the June ride.  I sang karaoke even though I never sing with a mic.  DJs Herb Digs and Rx, Magic Mic, raffle prizes, craft center, food, drinks...lots of fun  www.nerinna.com/lifecycle/index.html

Ride with PosPed, neighborhood run

After taking tons of pictures of Cesar, I met with my group ride with the PosPed.  http://www.pospeds.org/ The ride was 35 miles out and back from Orinda to Lafayette/Walnut Creek.  Part of the ride was going though commerial areas which was a bit of a pain because of the stop lights.  We rode for about an hour and stopped for 30 minutes for folks to eat a nice breakfast/lunch.  I am not used to eating, which I didn't because I had my Perpetuem.  We rolled out again, and I thought I was warm enough to take off my windbreaker.  Bad idea...I got really cold.  I need thicker skin.  I then starting following the slower paced group, and when climbing up a short hill, I passed the group and tried to catch the faster group.  Well, I lost them because I didn't take the correct route.  I was then riding through downtown Walnut Creek and the shopping mall.  At one point, I decided to call Roy because he knew the area, and I didn't know where to go (unless I rode on the freeway 24 which I couldn't do).  He was close by so he picked me up.  When his car pulled up, I saw the slower group pass by.  I really wanted Roy to give me directions so I ride back to Orinda, but he said I might have got lost again.  I was so upset that Roy had to SAG me and I only rode 21 miles.  I guess I had extra time to set up for the Fundraising Party.  I was really upset that I didn't get to do the mileage I wanted to do.  Because I didn't get in my whole ride, I ran from my house to Berkeley's Aquatic Park to release my anger.  It helped.

Cesar in bike shorts

I left my house quickly with my camera  to catch Cesar in wearing only his bike shorts without his usual extra sweats or other clothing over his bike shorts.  I took a couple of photos.  He felt violated when I was looking at his legs.  Ha...now he knows how I feel.  I'm not into the spandex gear either.

Tap dancing and Spinning

I crosstrained and took a tap class at ODC.  It’s been a few months since tap danced.  I enjoyed that I had to use my brain and concentrate on the sequence of steps rather than the mechanical movements of the other sports.  I then had a small snack before I heading to the 24 Hour Fitness.  I took the Abs class that was very challenging.  I met Cesar, and we took the Spin class.  It was intense.  I was sweating more than Cesar.  Hahahaha!

Ride with Lisa - Tunnel Road, Berkeley

I received an email from Lisa, a future Canada Ironwoman, calling our other riders to ride with her today.  She has a brand new bike, a birthday gift from several family and friends.  My faculty meeting was cancelled so I rushed back to Berkeley and made it home by 3:20pm.  We started our ride at 4pm towards Tunnel Road.  It was a nice ride plus the roads weren't wet.  I took several pictures of Lisa on her first ride on her Specialized Ruby bike.  The Bay Area views were so beautiful as the sun was going down.  We going to descend on another road, but Lisa remembered that there wasn't much light and the descent was fast.  We decided to ride down Tunnel road.  Riding down hill was a bit painful because of the cold, cold air.  My hands were freezing.  My ride was a bit sketchy because my headlamp wasn't bright enough to light the road.  I basically followed Lisa's path.  Time to get a new light.  We arrived at Lisa’s at 6pm ready to drive to Lake Merritt for our run training.  We warmed up in her house.  Instead of running in the cold night, we ate a yummy dinner and a potpourri of desserts.

Cleansing

Since the beginning of this new year, I have been in a cleansing kick.  Today I cleaned the Hobbit Room (named because of the 6 foot ceiling) for the kiddies for Fun and Fundraising party.  It felt great to get rid of extra boxes and condense more my junk.  Hopefully I’ll get to  clean more and not be such a pack rat, like most other teachers.  Cleansing, another form of crosstraining.

Crosstraining - Painting

During my Winter Break from work, my crosstraining was painting unit A to get ready for new tenants.  Ten plus hours of painting the rooms…luckily my ipod kept my company.

Velo Girls Northern Exposure Ride

Lisa mentioned to me that she was going to ride with the Velo Girls. I was a bit sick on Saturday so I didn't go the PW Run. I felt as I needed to do something active.

Again, I was going contemplating if I should just stay home and continue painting the front unit. Knowing that Lisa was going to be there, I left my house by 7:30 am.

The six of us started the Northern Exposure Ride at 8:30 am. We rode to East Peak and then descend to Alpine Dam and Fairfax. What a beautiful ride! This was my first trip to Mount Tam. Lots of climbing, but such lovely views. We stopped at the Mills Valley Roasters, but I wasn't hungry because I was taking Perpetuem. As I was riding, I felt that it was never ending because my mind was focused on getting home to do chores. I didn't want to the leave the group because I didn't know the way back. We finally arrived back to Sportsbasement at 3:00 pm.

I need to work on my descending skills. I'm always scared that I might fall and hurt myself. I have to work on my confidence.

When I arrived home, I looked Velo Girls ride board and found out that the ride was 53 miles and 4400 feet of climbing. Wow! I'm amazed that I did the ride because I wasn't expecting such a hard ride.

Tropa Ride: Berkeley Loop from Lake Chabot

I have ridden 2 rides with ALC for 20 something mile rides, but I wanted a challenge so I decided to ride with the Tropas (www.mytropa.com).

We started at Lake Chabot. I was happy to see some of the guys I rode my first century with. Some were mountain biking, and I was with 4 others who were doing a road ride.

It was cold. I experimented with wearing 3 layers of gloves, but it was too difficult to get a grip of my breaks. Toes were okay because of my ski socks and new booties for my shoes. I was frightened when I heard there was a possibly of black ice on the road. Scary!

Lots of climbing...I wished for a lighter bike and faster legs. We finally got to the turn around point at Tunnel Road's Outlook. Oh, I was so close to my Berkeley home and wanted to ride home instead of going back to Hayward. I felt guilty, plus one Tropa said that I shouldn't go back home.

I finished the 45 mile ride. Yes, it was challenging, but I'm glad I didn't chicken out. I also realized that I need to work on my nutrition because one hour before we finished I was so hungry that I ate and drank mostly everything I brought with me.

PW run, walk/ride in City

Back to run training with PacWest. I ran with Paulette for a short 4 miler. In the afternoon, I finally made it (after a one hour stall on BART because of police action under the transbay tube) into the Embarcadero for a City Tour on foot and bike with Jason.

ALC Ride: Orinda to Pinole Loop

Cesar and I rode with the ALC beginner group starting from Orinda BART. This was my first workout since my marathon. If Cesar didn't pick me up, I probably wouldn't have ridden.

It was nice ride riding through the part of the 3 Bears Loop although I didn't enjoy the cold air. My hands and feet were freezing. At one point, I wished that I had my ski mask because my face was cold. Oh, this was also my first time experience riding in the thick fog. Scary!

When we made a stop at the Starbuck's in Pinole. Usually I don't take such long breaks, but I had to go with the flow. Well, I got to chit-chat with other fellow ALC riders.

I had to chase Cesar up one of the hills. I felt really good on the ride because I stayed with the front pack.

A 6 foot plus man mentioned that my bike was cute. Well, I can't help that I'm petite.

Endurance Performance Training Center

I met Cesar for the Bike Fit & Biomechanics of Cycling Clinic at Endurance Performance Training Center. I watched the people on their trainers with a good sweat. I was jealous because I haven't ridden my bike because of my recent marathon and the Parol Lantern Festival and Parade.

Good information on cycling. My bike is currently fit for triathlons, and now I'm thinking if I should get my bike re-fit for this ride. Then I was thinking maybe I should get another bike that's lighter so I can go faster...hmm.

Finished my 2nd marathon!

No rides this weekend because of my California International Marathon in Sacramento. I beat my 1st marathon time by 1 1/2 hours. My final time was 4:27. Thanks to Coach Diane and PacWest East Bay Team (www.pacwestathletics.com)! Now I'm ready to concentrate on riding!

Post Thanksgiving Ride

My partner in crime, Cesar, could not do a ride with me so I decided to do a ride on my own starting from my mom's house (Daly City/SF borderline) to Golden Gate Park and back.

At the stop light on Brotherhood Way, this *&(*% man honked at me for being in his way on the far right lane. I guess he really wanted to get somewhere quick, and I had to let it go.

I seem to make stupid decisions when riding. As I was riding the Great Highway before Sloat Blvd., I decided to go on the sidewalk. I fell because there wasn't a gradual driveway from the road. Well, I just got skid marks on my right elbow, and luckily I had my windbreaker and arm warmers. (I think riding bikes will give me good war wounds, but I know I have to stop having these "brain farts.") I think I should try mountain biking because my falls would be softer on dirt, right?

I had a peaceful ride from Ocean Beach through Golden Gate Park because there were not that many cars. I turned back when I hit the Panhandle. I enjoyed the rest of the ride back to my mom's with the short climb of Brotherhood Way.

I hope I melted the tons of food I ate for Thanksgiving!

First ride with ALC - Lake Merced Loop from the Sports Basement in the Presidio

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel doing this ride because I ran a 20 miler the day before, but I wanted to spin my legs. I was happy to see familiar faces, Rick and Roy, who were doing other rides from Sports Basement.

I'm surprised that I kept up with the faster group. I was proud to be able to ride with the "fast group." Although we didn't follow the route subscribed, we still had a wonderful ride.

To reward myself for my weekend warrior mileage, I spent lots of money at Sports Basement.

10:00 PM

I'm committed!

I'm committed to this 545 mile bike ride from SF to LA. Roy from Tropa (mytropa.com), a friend of 15 years, mentioned that he was riding the AIDS/LifeCycle. He planted the idea of this ride in my head. Then Susan emailed and mentioned she signed up. I was 60% ready to sign up. My dilemma was leaving my students for a whole week, but I decided that they would understand that I am riding for a great cause.

Cesar and I went to the info meeting, and I was ready to sign-up. I even handed Cesar a pen so he can start filing the application and he could tuck back into the folder and think about the committing later. Too my surprise...he signed up, too! Yes!!!

Since my Escape from Alcatraz race this year, I spent more time on the bike because I wanted to improve my bike time. I now enjoy riding compared to the other sports. Well, I better enjoy riding because I will be riding for 7 straight days. Yikes!
