My pain, everyone's gain

Hello all! Thank you for visiting my homepage! Let's see. A bit about myself. I'm a 27-year-old Chico State graduate, currently working as Product Safety Manager at a rice Mill near Chico, CA.

How did I find out about AIDS lifecycle?? Well, I had ACL surgery in August and decided to rehab my knee through cycling. There are some beautiful single track mountain bike trails about 3 minutes from my old house near the wine country, so I bought my boy Charlie (my mountain bike) and hit the trails (sometimes literally) with much passion and energy.

One morning, while getting a refreshing beverage at San Marco, my favorite coffee shop in Calistoga, I noticed an advertisement for AIDS lifecycle. I grabbed one, read it over, and signed up 20 minutes later for the 545 mile torture session between San Francisco and LA.

Torture it may turn out to be, but it's a WONDERFUL cause and I'm more than happy (in fact, I'm ecstatic) to help raise money for it. The parents of a dear friend of mine are currently living with HIV, so I, like everyone out there, am personally affected by this disease.

I'll leave you with one thing:

DONATE!

If I can give up 7 days and thousands of Calories for the cause, how about you giving a check and the 20 calories it would take to write it out?? Or, even easier, there's a link on this very page! Thanks, and I'll keep everyone posted about my progress!

Messages of Support for Becka

Carolyn (6/12/08 2:29PM): Hi Tentmate, Just heard the news about the fires and was wondering if you are near them. Hope all is well and that you ankles are recovering. Kevin (my husband) met me at Pepperdine (lunch) on Saturday and rode the last 20 miles with me - excellent drafting! Was nice meeting you. Carolyn

PS Don't forget to look up gooseberry mesa!!

Kevin (6/09/08 2:24PM): Hi Becka, Hey Girl... It was great meeting you. Wish we had been able to spend more time together. Glad you made the ride. It was wonderful to see you it camp and always a delight. I hope to see you next year. You sure know how to pack for camping. Take care of yourself.

Your friend, Kevin

Gayle Holz (6/01/08 2:28PM): You go, girl! Hi, Becka; I'm a friend of your parents and Dick Hobson's wife. I'm a retired high school P.E. and Health teacher and worked closely with SCAP (Santa Cruz Aids Project) while teaching 31 years in Felton. I'm more than happy to support your effort to raise money AND get this good exercise, for the body and the soul. Have fun!

Jacki and Mike (5/31/08 10:52PM): Sending hugs and blessings to our girl. I really look forward to hearing all about it!!!

Joe Schlesinger (5/28/08 12:05PM): Keep the faith sistah....it's a long ride but you're doing a great thing!! Enjoy the scenery :-)

Brad (5/07/08 11:44AM): Sweeeeeet!! Go get em 'Sport Beans Gal'. Hopefully the Jamis from Calistoga Bike Shop treats you well. We'll back you up all the way.

David Fuhs (12/03/07 7:37PM): So hitch a little cart to the back of your bike and haul the doggies along with you. Think how much the extra 20-30 pounds will help your conditioning and how cool you'll look.

Karla (11/30/07 10:25PM): Very cool Becka! We should catch up sometime soon.

Eddie (11/28/07 3:12PM): That's awesome Becka! You're not kidding about torture. That's no joke...DO IT UP!!

Mark (11/26/07 1:41PM): I would suggest you hook a trailer to the bike and stock it with Sterling Merlot. You might not finish the ride, but you won't care, and if you do finish the ride, you will be hydrated.

Jim (11/20/07 11:56AM): This is EXCELLANT!! I have $100.00 riding with you! Do I get to dog-sit Daphne also?

Rae (11/19/07 2:58PM): Wow, that's impressive, you're a stud muffin! I'll see what I can do ;) Good luck!!!

Back in the country

Well, i'm back in the country!

I took three weeks off, traveled to Scotland (best country in the world.  or, well, of the ones i've visited), hung out in chico for a week, got a new job, you know.  the usual.  I'll be moving back to chico in a couple of weeks to start said new job, which is a great relief for me.  I've been missing that place like crazy.  So.  Training will be easier now that i'll be around my cycling buddies.  i went on two training rides while i was there last week.  first i rode Charlie (i missed him while i was gone.  by the end of my trip i was having charlie dreams) in upper bidwell park, which made me realize that when you don't ride for 3 weeks, most of your conditioning goes straight out the window.  Next i did a 48 mile 3.5 hour ride up this KILLER (well, killer to me, the other ladies did juuuuuuust fine) hill to cohassett then around the chico valley.  i'll be doing at least 2 weekend rides for the next month or two, and whatever else i can fit in during the week with my new job, so hopefully the next time i do the cohassett hill ride it'll go much smoother.  we'll see!

weekend riding

I road with my friend Lisa's cycling group this weekend. Holy. Cow. I'm NOT up for that yet. i think i almost died. k, so maybe i didn't die, but i was blowing serious wind trying to keep up. we rode 57 miles, which is at least 17 miles longer than i've ever gone. i guess one good thing is that i finished with the group. i'm still not convinced that they didn't totally slow up so i wouldn't get dropped off. damn i need to do that some more. the next day i road with a friend. it was an easy 32 miles on rolling hills. that's MUCH more my speed right now. it's a good thing i got those rides in though, cause i leave for scotland in 4 days (YAY for scotland! YAY!) and i won't be riding till after christmas. holy cow i'm still tired from my rides. i love my bike.

riding riding riding

Rode to st. helena and back yesterday. it was a pretty good ride, but MAN was it chilly. at the end of the ride i charged the hill at sterling. I had a hell of a time shifting down to my lower gear, so i was grumbling the entire way up. then i felt pretty good, cause i did the hill in a higher gear. then i felt pretty lame, cause i was in the low gear the whole time, just in denial that the hill was that hard to climb. ew. but i tell you, down the other side is crazy! almost 40 mph, which is pretty fast for the dark! i got a light for my bike so i can do some night riding. it's getting to be necessary with the total lack of light at mid-afternoon. today i'm going to San Francisco to ride across the bridge and then a bit in the GG park. should be fun.

i hate poison oak. HATE. it.

Went on a training ride on my mountain bike. I headed up Oat Hill Mine trail. Wrecked in a poison oak bush (i'm NOT talented when it comes to the act of staying on my mountain bike yet. Yet.) and got a FAT case of the itches. The ride rocked. I totally bottomed out my shocks. The trail is mad rocky with an almost-cliff side. I LOVE using all 4.5 inches of travel! If i can climb that hill on my beast of a bike, hills will be NO worries on my sleek lil road bike. Damn, i HATE poison oak.

OH my do i have a long way.....

Ok. I had 4 days to ride. I started out with a 20 mile ride, then a 22 mile ride, then a 30 mile ride. Sweet. Now I just have to triple that. And then some =). It was SO cold out this weekend that it took me HOURS to warm up after a ride. It's a good thing i got some cold weather gear, else i'd be a permanant popcicle. I love popcicles. But maybe not human ones. But i digress. My goal for this week is a 50 mile ride. I think i'm gonna do it in Chico with a friend of mine. She's an animal though. i'm not sure she'll want to lug her pace down to a point where i can keep up =). Ok. That's it for today!

New Bikes Rock

Ok So i got my new bike last night. I don't think i believed any bike could be as cool and fun to ride as Charlie (my mountain bike), but oh my, i had SO much fun riding my new road bike! She's a 2007 Jamis Quest steel frame and she's smooooooth, like butter. I road to St. Helena and back, a ride i've done on Charlie befor, and it was a whole new experience. Road bikes are so FAST!! I love going fast. I can't wait to ride a lot over this four day weekend. YAY for new bikes!

YAY FOR NEW BIKES!!!!

Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. Brad just called me from the bike shop in town. My bike's coming tomorrow. Oh yay. It's kinda like christmas in november. Only without the colors. Or the tree. Or, well, pretty much anything christmas-y. This'll be my first road bike. I go on my first training ride tomorrow, down to St. Helena and back. I've done it on Charlie (my mountain bike), so I'm hoping it'll be easier with my new bike. It's about 16 miles round trip, with the hill up to my winery at the end (it's oh so butt-and-quad-breakingly steep. My glutes are screaming at me just for thinking about it). My longest ride this summer is 105 miles. I've got quite a way to go.
