I'm Riding to End AIDS

The sounds of life are happening around me as I lay there incapable of joining in. Wondering when I will feel better , have more energy....My mind screams..... Get UP! ..... but my body will not let me.

We have all been there at one point or another when we have gotten the flu or a terrible cold. But we got better ! People who have AIDs do not, at least not without our help.

From June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in the AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles .

Several months ago I watched the PBS series called P.O.V. : State of Denial features a documentary about South Africans struggling to survive with HIV in the face of social stigma, a severe lack of access to lifesaving treatments, and their president Thabo Mbeki's controversial stance on the connection between HIV and AIDS. This struggle is happening to more then South Africans and that the cost of medicine is high. The show opened my eyes and created a desire to somehow help.

Later a friend mentioned how she was doing this ride and wanted to know if I would join her.  I agreed knowing that in this way I could give more to help AIDS patents then I could give on my own and that sometimes giving of ourselves and encouraging others to help reach our goals we can make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

Help me support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation by giving what you can.

Jerry Strom (5/06/08 8:14PM): Great Going Tammy: I know you will achieve your goal of both riding to LA as well as getting the donations you are looking for. I will send you a donation to help your fund reach the $2,500 goal you are looking for.

I am really proud of you for doing this and making such an effort to make a difference both for yourself and for anyone who is in need of support through the program.

J. L. Strom

Shauna Axton (4/21/08 10:50AM): We can do it! Love the ride logging...might need to start that myself. Looking forward to seeing the 67 mile ride we just did show up on your page...that was a tough one.

colleen guerrero (4/09/08 9:41PM): My brother, Dan, would be proud of you Tammy. He will be riding with you all the way south. Just listen to him as he encourages you to keep biking even as your legs grow tired. He will be able to do this encouragement better than I from his advantage point, Heaven.

72 miles

My first thought was wouldn’t it me nice to ride out to the light house. It was the highlight of the day. Leaving from Petaluma I rode D street out towards the coast. It was warm and clear. I had hopes that I might make 100 miles. In my mind I thought of the route I would take. ........... As I got closer to the coast the wind picked up. It was tough going. At one point I thought why am I doing this? I just wanted to turn around. Then out of the blue two guys came along and as the past they said hope behind and draft. What luck! I pulled in behind and immediately felt the relief. Wow! What a difference riding with a group is. I began to realize " maybe I can do this! " On hwy 1 I turned right onto San Anselmo Blvd. Heading for Inverness as I neared it I looked at the time and realized that it was getting late and needed to turn around. The light house would have to wait. My route back would take me to the Marshall wall. I have done many ride there with friends and as I rode home I thought of those times. I can't wait to do this again but with company this time. What a day.

57 miles

At first I thought I would not ride today because of the wind but as the day continued, the wind died down and I found myself excited about the prospects of a ride. Where would I go today? What would I see?

I decided to ride out to Occidental then either ride to Coleman valley or on to Joy rd.  As I rode I found today must be tree trimming day because I came across 3 different companies trimming trees along the road. You have to be careful because the downed trees can puncture your tires so it was slow going at times. The day turned out to be stunning (I like those kinds of days) not to windy but enough to keep you cool. When I got to Harrison Grade I felt pretty good, it has been along time sense I traveled on this road, and since last time I was not in good shape it was a breeze going up the hill. The view was stupendous and I felt accelerated to be on the road. Down in Occidental I had a decision to make and decided to go on to Joy road. Last time we ended up seeing a calf being born at the edge of a farm which was at the bottom of the Joy Rd. I am always amazed how pretty it is here. No calf at the bottom but I did meet up with a group of guys from the East coast who had enjoyed the Wine Country Century last weekend. They were fun group and told me how much they enjoyed the ride. Continuing on I rode Bodega Hwy until I reached Jonive Rd. From there you can see the ocean and what a wonderful view. Now I am ready to get home . Right on Occidental Rd and then left on Green Hill, right on Graton, over 116 hwy to Frei then to Laguna and on to home. What a day!

67 miles PLUS

As well as the Aids Life Cycle ride, I am doing the Napa Sprint TRI, May 4. So this morning I start out by doing a Brick which is running 3 miles to 24 hr fitness to swim 16 laps then running back. The morning is chilly but I have good company on my run so the time fly’s by. We take a route that parallels a stream. There are water foul swimming and enjoying the morning sun, someone has but out food for them and as we run by they seem irritated that we are bothering them.  I am a little stiff still but by the time we get to the pool I am ready for the laps. After we throw on our cloths and start the run back. At the Starting point Shauna is waiting for me to start our ride north.
The ride begins on Chalk Hill; it’s an easy climb to the first hill then a long decent. This morning the valley is sprinkled with many wild flowers, blue, pink, and red. Then we climb several more hills and start into Alexander Valley. The vineyards are always a treasure to ride next to. A vast valley sprinkled with green and brown grape vines. And then of coarse there is the yellow mustard. We stop at Jim Town to refill our bottles, and continue to Cloverdale where we turn on Dutcher Creek Rd. There is a nice river and lush greenery that runs next to Dutcher creek which enhances the ride to Dry Creek Rd. Once there we travel to West Dry creek road and make a stop for lunch at Lambert Bridge Winery. Shauna and I enjoy a peanut butter and honey sandwich and a orange and NO we did not have any wine (although we thought about it ). Continuing on we traveled onto Westside Road then to Laguna Rd then back to Santa Rosa where we started. It was so great to get back, I was tires but ecstatic that we did it.

17 very hilly miles

I try to do a lunch ride with the guys every Wednesday. Today we are riding to sonoma mountain rd and back. It is windy on adobe but because it is warm I do not mind. The pastures are green and the view is fabulus. Riding up the first hill is tough but I finally make it. Then there is a nice down hill and you start back up again. It seems enless, climbing and climbing. It flatens out for a bit and then you climb some more. At one point I am leaning over my handle bars to stay on my bike. My breathing is very labored and I think" I can make it this time and start to snake my way up the hill. The time before I ended up walking it as it was too tough for me. When I finally make it to the top, know how hard it was the guys cheer for me. I lay down exsasted beyond beleaf.

36 miles

Well I am done at work early today so I have decided to ride out to Marshall and back. Starting in Petaluma I traveled out Western Ave. to Chilino Valley which turns into Marshall/Petaluma Rd. It’s a beautiful day, the hills are green and as I travel by many farms, which are sprinkled with cows and goats, a large milk truck passes me and waves as if to give me encouragement on my ride. At the top of Marshall Hill it is clear as a bell and you can see forever…… well it seems like it.  Turning around I enjoy the thrill of flying down the hill only to come upon the milk truck inching his way out of a farms driveway at the bottom of the hill. Good thing I have great breaks. We smile at each other as we pass. About 2 miles later I came across a group of turkeys that did not want to get out of the road. Good thing I was not a car. What an eventful day.

10:03 AM

63 miles

Riding a small portion of the vine man route, we started at Fulton and Guerneville rd in Santa rosa.It was a cool morning but you could tell it was going to get warmer as the day wore on.

Traveling down Guerneville rd then turning on Laguna Rd, I felt pretty strong, there was not allot of traffic which was nice. It is always nice to ride in a group but does not always works out that way so I travel with my Iphone in my bento box. It has a nice set of speakers so I turn on the tunes which keeps me company. As the ride progressed and my energy slowed I was glad that I brought it. We crossed River road and traveled on Trenton/Healdsburg Rd for a while then turned left onto East side, then right at Wohler Rd to crossed the bridge then turned right on West side road.

Although my friends waited for me often, which I was glad for, I just did not seem to have the stuff to keep up. But the day was beautiful, the mustard was in full bloom and it was a joy to be riding. Occasionally one of my friend would hang back and ride with me for awhile. It amazes me how many people you can meet on a ride.

As we traveled close to Healdsburg the wind started to pick up. Regrouping we turned on Kinley Rd then turned left on Dry Creek Rd. The valley glowed bright with mustard yellow and and Grape vines. The wind was pushing us as we headed down the valley . This is when it is really great to be in a pack every one taking a turn to pull the others. We stopped after our turn onto Canyon Rd to eat some food and re-energize.

After Canyon we turned right and then took a left on hwy 128 which is in the center of Geyserville. Alexander Vally is stunning but it was even better because now the wind was behind us. At 1 point we were doing 26 mph.... Pritty cool. we stopped for another snack at the Jimstown store then back on the road. I think everyone wanted to get back because one moment we were traveling together then everyone was gone..... I remember thinking " I just got smoked !! " .

I have to say some of my best moments are alone. I started to realize I needed to move my training up a notch so I am at my best for my coming ride . but hay I had just done 63 miles, Its a good start.

Mark, Liz, Shawna and I did a 38 mile ride on sat. Shawna does not have a bike yet so she rode my new one and I rode my old one. It is about 10 pounds heaver and I felt every once of it. I suppose that is a good training method.

We went out to Occedental then back to Windsor where the river had flooded the road from the last rain. and then back to Santa Rosa.

Time to Ride

The start of the New year seamed a good way to start this road entry.

The day was stunning , blue skies a few clouds. My friends and I road from Helen Putnam Regional Park in Petaluma to Marshall and back. We traveled down Chileno Valley Rd on to Petaluma Marshall Rd which takes you over Wilson Hill, a long steady climb but the view of the surrounding area is amazing. Then there is a fun down hill. At the bottom the road travels along a ravine, winding its way along to the coast. We passed many farms, the hills sprinkled with cows grazing in the fields. It got cold in the shadows of the hills but the company and views made is seam warmer. We climbed Marshall to find a breath taking view of Tomales Bay and the coast. We sat at the top of the hill enjoying each others company and the view realizing all to soon we would have to travel back. But it was worth is for as we reached our cars there was an amazing sun set.
