Glad you called in, it was nice to hear your voice NOT from the back of an ambulance. Glad things are going great. Sounds like today with the bbq at the school was pretty special. We love you!

ali rahimi (5/31/08 12:48AM): Hey Crash, I love the fact that we're doing this again. Thanks for all your support during the past year & especially slowing down, during our training rides, while going up those #$&*%#$&*^^^^^^ hills so I could catch up. Let's try not to live up to your reputation this year...No more kissing the road!!!!

Laura Monk (5/29/08 7:07PM): Go go go go go....then you will be done done done! Thinking of you....I'll miss your voice and your "darlin's" on the phone, but I guess I can go without for such a good cause! Be safe and many blessings! Laura (your Ga pal)

Kris & Jen (5/28/08 2:21PM): As your departure day approaches, Jen and I would like to wish you a safe ride and return home! With each peddle, may you be reminded of the many reasons you are making this ride and the bigger picture of what it all means. You and all the other people that are riding and supporting the riders are truly amazing people!

We love you so very much and you can rest assured that we will be standing at the finish line with ice and bandages in hand for you. (and a bottle of jack daniels.. you didnt think the ice was for your body did you? silly boy)

little steph (5/28/08 10:06AM): HIIIIII! I'm so excited that I had to write on your page and pretty much say nothing. Thanks for being AWESOME. You are the best and I'm so glad we met. See you in a few days :)

Nina (5/19/08 9:53PM): Hi Gordon:

Here are a couple of Irish blessings that I thought I would share and thought of you. I wish you the very best and love seeing your growth, balance, energy and passion. All my love, Nina

During your ride: May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rain fall soft upon your fields And May the hand of the spirits uphold you and help you glide through each day with love in your heart, joy in your mind and a smile upon you face.

At night after each ride:

Walls for the wind And a roof for the rain And drinks beside the fire. Laughter to cheer you And those you love near you And all that your hearts may desire.

and always:

Always remember to forget The things that made you sad. But never forget to remember The things that made you glad. Always remember to forget The friends that proved untrue. But never forget to remember Those that have stuck by you. Always remember to forget The troubles that passed away. But never forget to remember The blessings that come each day.

All my best wishes, Nina

Jenn (5/15/08 12:03PM): Congrats on meeting your fundraising goal!! WOOHOO!!

I was sorry to read about your crash--I took my first bike fall on Saturday, so I know how it is. The most disappointing thing is wrecking the bike and getting set back in training. As I read your blog I had to stop in and write, as it sounded so familiar. Kudos to you.

Now that yo've gotten it over with I want to wish you good luck. Perhaps we will run into one another at The Event.

May you ride stong and well, Gordon :D

Katrina Russek (5/08/08 11:43AM): Dear Gordon,

I am pleased to be able to make this donation to you and such a worthy cause! My sister, Kris Slawosky says this is a cause that is near and dear to your heart and for that reason, I am pleased to support you. Good luck!

Philip Younce (5/07/08 2:35PM): Gordon -- So glad to see you looking so fabulous after the fall and wishing you the best of everything on your ride. And do not pay any attention to all those geriatric folk passing you on the sidewalk - you'll be up to speed in no time!

Kris & Jen (5/07/08 2:10PM): Crash... Jen and I are thrilled that you are ok! Could you please stop doing that! Congrats on the speedy recovery and all the hardwork that you have put into this. Proud of you!!

Rita Duvall (5/05/08 11:21AM): GO-GO-GO Gordie!!! best wishes and love from your auntie r. and uncle m.

Team 100
Team 100 was a very simple idea--that as one, we can do great things, but to come together as a group, we can do so much more beyond our expectations. The idea was brought to life with help last year with the dedicated members and friends of Shifting Gears. With 107 members strong, the team raised close to a half a million dollars for ALC 6. Team 100 is on track to becoming the largest single-event fundraising entity made up of individuals, without the benefit of major corporate sponsorship. The team hopes to exceed its fundraising expectations in the upcoming year.

Here's where I got my start. Thanks to them, I was able to do the ride last year. I teach spin here...If you're in the Los Angeles area, come on in and take my class. My classes are discounted for all ALC 7 Riders. Tues. & Thurs. @ 7:00AM

After the ride

Well folks, that's it. It's done for another year. I can't believe it. It was once again a most wonderful experience. I made it every single inch....no crashes :), no accidents, not even a single flat tire. The hills were a pain in the a** but I made it up every single one of them. Though I went up Quadbusters twice, just to see if I could do it. I met some of the most wonderful amazing people, got to reunite with some of the old ones, and of course had my loving wonderful training buddies with me.

As you saw we raised 11.6 MILLION DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!! It feels so great! Thank you to everyone who donated and supported, and thank you to my cousin Jessica with hooking us up with some fantastic rooms at the Hilton (plug, plug) and thank you to my other cousin Felicite, for waking up and coming with us to show her support at opening ceremonies. Thank you to Kris, Jen, Philip, Darlene, Barry, Robyn, Adrian, and all others I didn't get to see for coming and showing their support at closing ceremonies...A special thank you to all of those who wrote me those wonderful words of encouragement while on the ride. You will never know how much they truly help.

Once again it was a wonderful experience and I'm off to start training for the next one!

LOVE

Final ride & BBQ

Well, that's it. My training is done, my bike is on it's way to San Francisco, and I'm frantic!!!

We had a wonderful final training ride with Team 100 on Sunday. It was very short ride, but my friend Tony and I flew through it. I pushed myself on purpose just to make sure my legs were going to hold up. (still recovering) and they did. When we got back to Helen's Cycles, Tony's partner Don asked us if we actually did the whole ride. He thought we may have turned around early because we got back so fast. But we didn't, we were just flying. Along the way, we picked up another rider named Terry. She was wonderful and a great person to ride with. After that we had a wonderful little picnic, with some hysterical games, great food and even better company. I now know who stays up late, who's an early riser, who snores, who's single and who's a slut....(you had to be there)

On Monday, I didn't do the Pos Peds training ride, but I did join them afterwords for a wonderful little BBQ. (Thank Brendan and "Mom & Dad"!!!) We had a wonderful time, just chatting and sitting around the hot tub, and jumping off the diving board. Brian Hodes (god bless him) shaved off his mustache for the first time in 15 years for some more donations which were then split amongst people who haven't hit their minimum yet. It was a sight to see and he looks great. We then had a little raffle, and a "fashion Show". If you are faint of heart, or related to me, you might not want to click on this link...

http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/5031753_wwhEb#P-4-20

That's it for now. I think this is my last blog before the ride. So THANK YOU to everyone who has donated past, present and future! Wish me luck!!!!

Hitting My Goal

I did it, I did it...I can't believe I did it. I hit my fundraising goal!!! Though now that I've hit the goal, I just want to see it keep going. Thank you so much to all of you who donated, and to all of you still to donate. I believe you are helping to make this the largest AIDS/Lifecycle ever!!! Last year we raised $11,000,000!!! and I think we're going to beat that number by far this year.

Well, day one is almost here, and I'm about to go crazy, though it's a good crazy. I'm so excited, I leave 2 weeks from today. (have some business to do next week first before the ride, trying to figure out how to pack business attire in with my riding clothes ;)

Thank you again to everyone who has donated, and will donate.

xoxo

Retired

Well, it's a sad day for me.

My beautiful "Buffy" has officially been retired today. Unfortunately the crash on the Santa Barbara ride caused more damage to my bike than to me. I am to go a step up on the replacement which will be wonderful but it is sad that after only two months, I have to say goodbye to my beautiful Cannondale CAAD8 baby. :(

Wish me luck with my new adventure, and we need to come up with a name before the ride!!!

Love, Crash

Chicken Lady update

Hey Possums,
Earlier today I enjoyed a nice visit with my dear friend Ken, the Chicken Lady. As many of you know, Ken Thomason, one of the original AIDS Ride participants, suffered a stroke last week which left him hospitalized. But today I write to you with good news: the Chicken Lady is well on the road to recovery.

Ken asked me to send a message out to all of his AIDS/LifeCycle family. He sends his deepest gratitude for all of your support during this difficult time, and wants each of you to know how much he loves you. It was thoughts of YOU GUYS, his Ride family, that got him through the scariest part of his stroke. And it's his excitement about participating in ALC 7 in just a few weeks - in whatever way he can - that's undoubtedly speeding along his recovery.

We had a good time gossiping, talking dirty, and doing a bit of soul searching... and it was a big relief for me to hear our beloved Chicken Lady "cackle" as only he can. While the stroke has left his body weakened, his spirit remains strong, and his determination stronger still. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Ken somewhere along the ALC route in a few weeks.

Until he's had time to do his makeup, the Chicken Lady isn't up to visitors. But he's really enjoying your calls and cards. And a couple of very lovely floral arrangements are bringing lots of cheer to his room. Send your greetings to:

Ken Thomason
c/o Little Company of Mary Rehabcentre
4320 Maricopa St
Room 14, Bed C
Torrance, CA 90503-4314

If you would like to send an email greeting to the Chicken Lady, go ahead and post it here or send it to me at brendan@brendanpatrick.com and I'll make sure he gets it chop-chop.
XOXO

My Fundraiser

Well, today was MY fundraiser, and it was a great success. I had a 90 minute spin class, with 3 instructors including myself (though I taught off the bike cause I'm still injured), but the best part of the class was that we had a live dj spinning our music. It was great fun and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Kudo's to Steve Stamstad, the other instructor. Not only did he teach the class, he had just taught his own spin class prior to ours. Thank you Steve!!! And big thanks to Paul and Jacqueline! They helped make it the success it was. And speaking of success, thank you to everyone who showed up and donated. With your help, I was able to raise another $585!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Team 100 Fundraiser

Well, we had a great fundraiser tonight at a bar/restaurant here called Eleven. It was a great event, (though I didn't win anything in the raffle :(, but that's ok. It all was for  a great cause. Last I heard we had raised over $60,000. I'm so proud to be part of this team. Not that I did anything per this event, but I'm still a member. :)

It was a wonderful event filled with great people, wonderful friends and a few celebrities including Jon Lovitz, Tori Spelling and her husband Dean, Lance Bass, Reichen, Ben Patrick Johnson J.P. Calderone and one of my favorite people, Mary from my favorite show "so you think you can dance". It was  great evening filled with some great raffle prizes including a $7600 road bike that was donated.

The drinks were flowing, the crowd was beautiful and most importantly money was raised. Thank you so much to Team Easton, Shifting Gears and Team 100 for putting together this wonderful event!!

Recovery

Well, the good news is, nothing's broken!!! Yeah, The bad news is, I can't get back on my bike until just before the ride. So, I will be a little behind in my training by the time the ride starts. I've pulled a couple of muscles, but all should be well by the time of the ride. I have about a day or so more on the crutches, and then I just get to gimp around for a while.

So the lesson here is....Don't Crash!

Santa Barbara Double Century

Well, here's my latest blog to explain the messages of support. We did a weekend of riding. 200 miles. (well it was supposed to be) It was a beautiful ride up to Santa Barbara from Santa Monica. Though the headwinds were something fierce. The weather was decent, and the views (mostly) were spectacular. I have to thank my friend Eric, for being a great riding buddy. All was going quite well until about 3 or 4 miles away from the hotel. I was going along, and didn't realize the bike path had ended and turned into a sidewalk. So I slowed down and saw a bus stop ahead. Going quite slowly I was trying to get past, a pole, a tree, and a homeless man. It didn't go so well. I caught the edge of the road, and on the way down stuck out my foot to avoid hitting the homeless man. This put my body in a very awkward position and into the tree, and it hurt!

Well, with the help of a GREAT sports med team, they were able to help me out when I got to the hotel. I had to wait until morning to see if I could ride or not. Well, I felt great and decided I was going to ride, though that's not quite what the dr. ordered, but hey, he said I couldn't make it any worse right....well apparently that wasn't so true.

I was comfortably going along and BAM, out of nowhere, or it seemed, and large bump in the road around mile 38. I nailed it and apparently didn't have as tight of a grip as I thought on my handle bars, which of course twisted my front wheel and sent me flying. Biker down, and I mean really down. Thank you again to Brian for keeping a cool head and finding a blanket for me to lay on (oh, and thank you to the lady and her daughter for coming out of her house and supplying the blanket.) Thank you to Jen for talking to be as the ambulance, police, and firemen showed up. That's right my first ride in an ambulance. Parents and family don't worry, I'm ok. Very bruised and have to have some more x-rays done, and I'm on crutches cause I can't put my pressure on my foot because of my hip, but the dr. said I was just really bruised with bad road rash. So that's my story, but I did make it 140 miles, and I just need some recovery time, but I will be on more training rides, and I can't wait for the ride.

Though I do have to say, the more I tell the story the more outrageous it becomes, but that's mainly what happened. :)

Day on the Ride

Sorry it took so long to start the blog, but here we go.

After some wonderful and difficult training rides with my friends Geo, Ali, and Xavier, I was hoping I was as prepared for the Day on the Ride as I felt. It was amazing. Upon arrival to the parking lot, BOOM, there goes my tire....ok, I'll just walk it up to Bike Attack and get a new tube....BANG, my back wheel just falls off!!! Great Start.   Finally after some great help from everyone we got Buffy fixed. The ride was great. Geo, Ali, Xavier, and Eric are such inspirations. It was a long ride, but a great one. I met some great new people, didn't crash (unlike last year) and had a wonderful time. The roadies were, as always, excellent and so supportive. The beginning of the ride was my usual training ride, but I usually turn around when we get to the top of Rancho Palos Verdes. (the water stop) Well, I found out there's a good reason for this, WOW, that's a big hill if you go left. But the other side was great...I hit 45.2 mph on the way down. Glad I didn't hit anything! Then some more rolling hills, some "wonderful smells" of the season and some tricky train tracks. Then we were back on track on my usual training ride. To finish it off, Tony gave a GREAT massage and Bike Attack had pizza waiting for us!

Thank you to everyone for making Day on the Ride such a great time and great success!
