I'm Riding to End AIDS!

Hi all!

This year, from June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

From now until June 1 I will be hard at work training for the ride, and could definitely use your support to reach my fundraising goal!

By making a donation you will be providing for the HIV/AIDS-related services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.  We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past.

Rock on,

Matt

Edward Lynch (6/02/08 6:11AM): Dear Matt, Everytime you go out and do awesome, thoughtful things like riding from San Fran to LA to raise money for AIDS, you inspire me to try to be a better person and to make a bigger difference in the world. If only you were a 30 year-old girl... Good luck with the rest of the ride and remember, WWAS?

I'm so excited for you to take on this new venture. It's truly admirable. And HELLO! Jet lag, late night karaoke, and a 33-mile ride all in a span of 48 hours?!??!!? You're my new idol. I wish you continued success throughout training and can't wait to see you next month and hear all the details!!!

Back in L.A.!

Hello friends & family,

Well, I am back in L.A. after an amazing 7 day journey through beautiful California!  The fact that I rode every one of the 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles is a bit hard to believe (and I'm sure some of you are surprised as well!).  My knees and quads are sore & my face is completely sunburned, but I have already signed up to do the ride again next year.

It was so outstanding for so many reasons:

  • Seeing the spirit of cooperation and community amongst 3000 people in camp and on the road every day.
  • The views of California that you never get from a car (riding past strawberry fields, the ocean, waving school children, vineyards, ).
  • Having people on the side of the road with banners, cow bells, and pom poms cheering you along the way.
  • The cinnamon rolls in Cayucos.
  • Having my mother & Jim as roadies, and seeing them when I got into camp every day (and a few people told me that my mom became their "mom" for the week).
  • The women handing out slices of pie to riders, on the side of the 101 near Santa Cruz.
  • Meeting new people from all over the world, and having total strangers stop riding to help you change a flat tire.
  • The car dealership that donated cars, the gas station that donated gas, and the high school girls who drove so riders could have transportation from camp to town in Lompoc.
  • Looking over your shoulder and seeing hundreds of bikes cruising along the coast and realizing you're all cycling for the same cause.
  • The Positive Pedalers (riders with HIV) out there every day and pedaling every mile.
  • An 81 year old man riding for his HIV positive son and in memory of his son's partner who died of AIDS.
  • Hearing stories each night about recipients of the services that my riding helps to fund.
  • Raising over $11 million for the SF AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.

I'm still collecting photos, and will send those shortly.  A HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to all of my supporters, who helped me raise more than $4100!!  My goal was $2500, and your generosity easily helped pass that.  And not only did you give money but you sent messages of support and kind words that helped me up those hills.  So again, thank you.

Until next year...

Packed!

All packed (minus the few things I already forgot which Adam is going to pick up for me...) and ready to go!  Cannot believe June 1 is almost here and that the ride is taking place in just a few short days.

Mix of anxiety and excitement, but mostly excitement!  Bike is en route to the Cow Palace, gear is in my duffle bag, and I am ready to go!

Ready to get on the road, to meet new people, and to make all of my sponsors proud.  Thank you again to everyone who supported me in this, it is so appreciated.

Okay well next you hear from me it will be from somewhere in the middle of California!

Cheers,

Matt

Outpost

This morning I got up early and rode from my house, up Crescent Heights, down Hollywood, up Fuller, over to Franklin and then up up up Outpost.  It was a tougher climb than I expected, I think because of my leg workout yesterday.  But got to the top and then rode Mulholland.

With the rain it was definitely muddy and my tires slipped a few times, but a good ride in the end.

Then I took my bike for a tune up... make sure it's ready for next weekend!  On Wednesday I drop it off to be shipped up north... after that the next time I see my bike is at the Cow Palace for Orientation!

morning riding!

I got back from Shanghai last night and thanks to jet lag was awake at 5 this morning!  So I started out at 6 and went on a great ride... down Santa Monica Blvd, took Wilshire down to Brentwood, cut over to Montana and rode that to Ocean.  Took Ocean down to Venice and hopped on the Strand, to Marina del Rey.  Cut around over to the Ballona Creek trail and then through Culver City back home.  It was fantastic!

Going to ride again tomorrow too because now we're in countdown mode.  Two weeks until the RIDE!!  Wow, I can't believe it's already here.  Very excited!

And a very big THANK YOU to my latest supporters -- Phil, Jill & Kevin, and the Solsbys!  Your support is so appreciated!

New Supporters!

Hello hello... from Shanghai!  I am back in China, and hitting the gym to keep my legs strong & doing lots of cardio.  I get back to L.A. a mere two weeks before the ride, so will need to spend some serious time riding between then and June 1!

Also a big thank you to my newest supporters -- Kristina Gould and Richard Dickson.  Their help is much appreciated and get me further and further above my fundraising goal!

Keep posted here for more updates as we reach the final weeks before the ride...

Beautiful ride to the beach!

Well only a few weeks left to the ride... and I'm traveling a lot between now & then, so I need to take advantage of days home in L.A.  On that note I did a great ride down to Marina del Rey this morning -- weather was beautiful!  So sunny & warm, with just enough wind to push me on.  Hoping to ride again tomorrow with Jacinto and get some more time on the bike.

Also, a BIG thank you to my latest supporters... Alex, Renee, Jennifer, and Alan!  Thank you all so much for pushing me above my fundraising goal.

Stay posted for more updates as June 1 rapidly approaches!

Ride on,

Matt

Mulholland

This morning Jase & I rode from his house (near one end of Mulholland), all the way to the other end.  It was an awesome ride!  Great weather (not too hot), not many cars, and we got a good mix of terrain.  Whoo hoo!

The best part was when we made a wrong turn, off of Mulholland, and started taking Coldwater Canyon all the way to the Valley.  That was a fun hill to ride back up!

Not too many weeks left until the ride -- need to keep training, running, strengthenin' my l-e-g-s!

Thanks for everyone's continued support...  Matt

To the beach!

This morning I got up early and rode down to the ocean... it was really overcast & kind of misty when I started out, but by the time I was headed home the sun had come out.  Good ride, legs felt good.  Now I just need to do that 100x between now and June 1!!

Thanks again for y'alls support -- and if you're reading this & haven't donated yet, please please do so before May 15.  It is much appreciated!

A big big big thank you to John-Mark for his very generous donation... it's the one that put me over the top of my fundraising goal!  YEAH!!  Of course I am eager to keep raising donations, as every extra dollar helps.  But with my goal met I am eligible to ride and so now my focus is to keep training, training, training!

Support & Shanghai

Hi everyone... well the thin layer of dust on my bike can be explained by my recent trip to Shanghai.  Luckily while I was gone I was able to do a lot of cardio & weights, and my legs are feeling pretty strong.

But now I am back in L.A. for a few weeks & can't wait to get out there and put on some miles!  Hard to believe the ride is in a few short months... I still have a lot of training to do.

In other news, I'm quickly approaching my fundraising goal, thanks to some new supporters!  A very big THANK YOU to Monsieur Lynch, Nicole & Marc Breslow, and Gene Murtha (who can vouch that I was going to the hotel gym in Shanghai).  These latest donations get me so close to my goal, I have a feeling I'll be surpassing it by the time June comes.

Will keep you all posted as I get back to riding, have a great weekend!

More fundraising...

Well I've been traveling for work, and will be be traveling some more in the next two weeks... so my "on the bike" time has been limited.  But I'm still doing leg exercises at the gym, and some cardio, to keep in shape.

But I wanted to give a BIG THANK YOU to my two latest supporters -- Shannon and Adam!  Thanks to you both for your donations, you rock!

Fundraising! And ridin' with Adam...

Hello hello!  It's been a while since I've made an update... the result of two weeks in Hong Kong & Shanghai.  But now I'm back in L.A. and ready to keep training (well once the rain stops today).

This weekend my brother Adam is coming to L.A. and we're going to ride.  And ride.  And ride.  I think he'll be the equivalent of a boot camp instructor -- and I need it!  Only 3.5 months left to train!

Also I want to send many many many thanks out to my most recent supporters from the Bay Area: BeckiLynn, Zahi, Adriana, Sandi, Maureen, Karen and Al.  Your support is so appreciated!

And here in L.A., a big shout to Craig for his generosity this week.  THANK YOU!

Fundraising & training continues... I'll keep you posted after this weekend's rides!  :)

Griffith Park & More Support!

Today Jase and I met at the Zoo parking lot.  8:00 a.m.  It was cold so I was rockin' some leg warmers (thanks Adam).  We headed out, did a loop through Burbank and then up to the water tower.  From the water tower we kept riding up and up through the hills.  It was quiet and amazingly beautiful.  At one point we turned a corner and the Hollywood sign was right next to us.  Then we turned another corner and came up to the Griffith Observatory!  We looped back down to Los Feliz Boulevard, then rode along the L.A. River and back through the park.  Whew.  It was a great ride!

On Saturday morning we did some yoga & hiking, both great cross-training activities.

Also I'm happy to say I have some new supporters... my boss Amanda, and her mother Carol!  Big big thanks to both of them!

I'm off to Hong Kong this coming weekend so I'll be doing my cross training... more yoga, working out at the hotel gym, and walking around the city.

Hikin'... and more support!

Well this weekend in L.A., as in much of California, was rainy!  And I am not too comfortable yet riding my road bike on wet roads and through the rain... so instead Jase, Chet, and I went on a hike!  It was good cardio (which I need), good for the legs (which I need), and I worked up a sweat (which I need).

Hopefully this coming weekend will be better & we can get on our bikes and hit the road!

Big thanks to JAMIE, my latest supporter!!  I am halfway to my fundraising goal and am so excited!!

Christmas Training & More Donations!

As I'm still thawing from a very cold & snowy weekend in Chicago, I wanted to write quickly with an update!

No, I didn't ride while I was away this past weekend... but I am bringing my bike up to Martinez for the holidays. That way my brother Adam and I can go out and he can kick my butt. It'll be great training and offset all of the food I'll be consuming!

Also, a BIG thank you to Alex for his donation! This gets me to the $1000 mark!! I'm so excited by everyone's generosity and know I'll be hitting my goal shortly.

Cheers,

Happy (and cold) Wednesday morning! I want to send a VERY VERY big thank you to Jim for his generous support as my latest donor.

I'm now at $900 and almost half way to my goal!

Thank you Jim!

I'll be bringing my bike with me to Martinez for Christmas, so Adam and I can do some riding & I can continue training. Plus it'll be a good way to burn away all of the holiday calories... :)

Stay warm,

More support!

My exhaustion after yesterday's ride led me to forget to thank my two latest sponsors...

BIG thanks to Emily & Porter! You guys rock!!

I'm still working towards meeting my fundraising goal -- so for any of you who haven't had a chance to donate, now is the time! It is all tax deductible & much appreciated.

Yesterday I was telling my friend Ankur about the 30 mile ride and he thought I was doing it on my rickety old Dutch bike. I can't even imagine what that would be like -- but if anyone wants to, umm, borrow that bike and ride along let me know!

Take care,

Hi all! Well this morning the crew (Jase, Brian, and myself) met at 7:30 and went ridin'! It was FREEZING but after a few miles the sun came out & by the time we made it to the beach it was really nice weather.

30 miles today and we were bookin' -- averaging 16 miles an hour! Go team!

Thanks for the continued support...

Back on the bike

Well I'm back in L.A. and today got back on my bike! Jase, Brian, and I did a group ride this morning from a bicycle shop near my house all the way down to Marina del Rey. Once there we added an extra loop near LAX and the ocean, and headed home... for a total of 33 miles!

It's the longest ride to date and my legs are definitely sore! Jet lag + late night drinks + 33 miles does not equal an easy day. But it was great to complete & we want to do that route again.

Thanks also to Berber & Brandie, my latest sponsors... you guys rock!

Stay tuned here for more.

Cross-Training

Hello again! Well, one of the training tips they give you is to cross-train. To do other forms of exercise or activity that will help your endurance, etc.

Luckily for me I have an enforced cross-training experience, as I am in Hong Kong the next two weeks. Without my bike!

So I will be doing some running, some yoga, some leg exercises to keep myself pumped for when I get back on my bike!

First Group Ride!

Well today was the first group training ride! With Jase in London, Brian and I arrived at the park bright & early, registered, and awaited further instruction.

There were three groups -- beginner, intermediate, and advanced. We wisely chose the middle group, that was scheduled to ride 25 miles.

Introductions, safety tips, and we were off... well sort of. I hadn't gone too far when my rear tire was flat! And of course I didn't have a spare tube with me! Luckily one of the ride leaders was behind me and pulled over to help.

I was completely embarrassed but he was great, gave me a tube and helped change the tire. And the ride continued!

It was a great morning, and I got a small glimpse of how friendly everyone is who is associated with this event. Can't wait for more group rides!

L.A. River

Hola! Well after a ragin' Saturday night I was not so enthused to get up this morning and ride. But I did it!

Brian and I met at 8... and apparently due to a miscommunication, Jacinto arrived at 9. So Brian and I set off, doing our usual loop around the park. Except we then cut up towards the Travel Town Water Tank into a really beautiful area --- no cars, no other bikers, and great views of the valley.

Then on our way down we came across Jase and decided to ride along the L.A. river. It's too bad the river is not especially clean, and that the bike path is sandwiched between the river and the freeway. And that gnats kept getting squashed on my forehead. And that Jase kept giving 'messages of hope.

But apart from that it was a good ride. 17 miles!

Until next time...

"Messages of Hope"

So Jase and I are riding up a hill in the park, my legs are burning because it's the third time we've done it, and then he tells me we're going to turn up another hill!

But all along the way he was yelling, or I mean encouraging me with (as he called them) message of hope. And it helped! We got to the top just in time to see an old man peeing on a tree...

Can't wait to get out there this weekend!

Hey everyone! Well today Jase and I had our first ride... 15 miles in Griffith Park. It was a lot of fun, a little exertion, and I was able to practice on my new bike.

Can't wait to keep on riding -- more and more each week leading up to June!

Keep posted here for updates along the way.
