I Ride for HIV Education, to End Stigma and End AIDS

This year's AIDSLifeCycle7 (ALC7) ride was amazingly memorable and fun, along with great people displaying random acts of humanity and our great weather. Yes, almost every morning was brisk and windy, as it was near bedtime (9pm), yet the California Sun blessed and graced us with his presence daily. The skies were generally a marine layer in the AM, followed by wind and sunshine the remainder of the day. The winds were mostly cross or tailwinds, and tailwinds are great on a bicycle, cross winds are not!

Day 1- San Fransico to Santa Cruz (97 miles), began in the brisk S.F. air, as we were cheered by 1,000's of supporters who came to see us 2500 riders off on our week long journey. The displays of humanity on this ride was awesome. For example, one rider asked my tentmate and I to accompany him across the Hwy bridge near the lunch stop because his is afraid of heights. We were honored to assist him, which he greatly appreciated.

Day 2- Santa Cruz to King City (105 miles), started out very cool, windy and dry. The nice warm breakfast helped us begin our day on the right foot. this was the longest route for the week. This was one of our warmest ride days of the week, stopping in Bradley California, population 120, + 2500 riders and volunteers, and supported the schoolchildren's biggest fundraiser of their school year. We then stopped by a beautiful Mission and left behind on white linen, dedications as to "why we are riding" in this amazing ride ( for lost friends, lovers and loved one's). I skipped the skinny dipping opportunity this year to see the gracious "cookie lady" who baked 100's of dozens of heathly cookies for the riders on one our unofficial rest stops.  Mmmm good, better than any store purchased types Great tailwinds sailed us into camp with well- deserved appreciation for mother nature's gift!

Day 3- King City to Paso Robles (80+ miles), The day started out breezy and cool, after breakfast and loading our gear/tents and walking them to the trucks (btw-a daily task), I did some yoga stretching (as seen in this photo), then we made our trek up the infamous "Quadbuster" hill (3-4+ miles of 7-10% grade) or something like that. "Ginger Brule"- the infamous ALC drag queen of these rides cheered everyone for making the climb!! The best thing about hills, is that what comes up must lead to a downhill- Yahoo! We sailed to more, fun rest stops where the pit-stop crews dressed in costumes and characters to entertain all of us riders (kudos to volunteers).

Day 4- Paso Robles to Santa Maria (97 miles of wine country), we ate breakfast, applied another daily smear of "butt blam or you favorite Chamis-Butt'r" to our behinds to reduce the chance of chaffing, then packed gear and brought to the trucks to be loaded. Then we were on our way through some of the states beautiful wine country wineries and the Halfway point on the ride. A spectacular view of Morro Rock and Cayucos from HWY 46. However, there is 'No sipping or chugging" wine in these rides and so we had to wait until we rode into L.A.  to really celebrate.

Day 5 -Santa Maria to Lompoc (55 miles in a Red Dress day), The Red dress on day 5 is a yearly ritual and began as a way for riders to display a visual impact of teh infamous red AIDS ribbon along the entire route and have fun in costumes simultaneously.  We gay people love dressing up and even the straight guys get into this on their second AIDSLifeCycle, not be a party pooper or feel left out of the fun!! The talent show is in the evening in camp and many stay up late to enjoy the show.

Day 6- Lompoc to Ventura (75+ miles through Santa Barbara & the SoCal coastilne), the Santa Barbara "Paradise Pit" stop is the most community supported pit stop of the week and provided by S.B. businesses- Way awesome ice cream, fresh strawberries, water and port-a-potties!! Rest stop 4 guys were hot, in their go-go dancer skimpy outfits-wholf! 3 other riders and myself lunched in S.B. just before the Paradise pit to enjoy some delicious Mexican food, revered by the late Julia Childs.

Day 7- Ventura to Los Angeles (65 miles riding through Malibu, Santa Monica and into closing ceremonies in Westwood). California has one of the most amazing coastlines and yet can be a bit scary on bicycles, yet we managed fine with our good training. I managed to take some pictures of some hunky surfer dudes along the way and help make the trek down the coast a bit more safe & secure for other riders due to my past training experience riding on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). Paying it forward is what this ride has been about all week long!!

Can I just say- ThankYou, thank you, thank you Oil Can Harry's staff (fundraising party), friends, family, party promo. supporters Tony and Richard ( for party postcards, and newsletter) and the overall L.A. community for coming out to greet us at Closing Ceremonies. L.A. friends, Without your support at the end of our long, exhausting week - we might have thought all this fundraising, and riding half the state of California was all in vain- However, you have proven this Ride has Community Value, as well as Significance in the fight for HIV/AIDS services, awareness and you embraced People Living With HIV/AIDS!!

In addition, I want to give my appreciation and recognize to all the AIDSLifeCycle staff, training ride leaders who helped make this year's training season and week long event such a smooth operation and awesome support system. Without these individuals, working as part of a well-oiled organization a rider's experience would be unpleasant or worse, catastrophic, like some of those riders who choose not to utilize the training rides or who unfortunately live too far away from S.F., L.A. or San Diego areas where most rides take place.

I give thanks to the fortunate opportunity, personal good health and the where-with-all to be involved in AIDSLifeCycle!

I rode again this past June, my 4th AIDS/LifeCycle in a row, because this Ride is so important. It raised HIV/AIDS awareness to 1,000's throughout the week in cities we rode down the California coastline. The Ride also brought HIV/AIDS awareness nationally and worldwide, through internet, TV, cable, radio and newsprint media formats. The Ride also spread awareness through everyone who associates oneself with this ride, be they family member of a rider who sought donations for their gay, straight, bisexual, transgender son or daughter, as well as through roadies and volunteers at fundraising and registration events.

I wish to continue to be involved with this ride, So I Have Already Registered for AIDSLifeCycle 8 next year in 2009! Why? Because life-sustaining services and HIV prevention education programs like those through non-profit agencies, such as the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center (LAGLC) and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation are vital. For example, LAGLC had begun the H.E.R.O. Project last year, in order to increase and enhance AIDSLifeCycle riders involvement in HIV/AIDS Awareness. To read more about the H.E.R.O. Project, see the web site link further down this AIDSLifeCycle homepage.

I rode this year for my friends, some who currently receive services from LAGLC and those friends/loved one's of my donors who are living among us, or who have passed away from AIDS too young/soon: Keith Lasley-friend/schoolmate, Robert Reed- friend/roommate (not the actor), Drew Ordway- colleague from Being Alive LA, Jake Sheppagril- friend, Paul LePierre- who used to own/ride the bike I rode in his honor and who I never had the pleasure to meet, Gerald- my mom's cousin, Jim Gordon (honored by Paul Williams friend), Donald Winkelman [half brother of Bill Winkelman's father] and Brent Nicholson Earle- founder of American Run of End AIDS (honored by Bill Winkelman's friend/hero), Tony Hudson (friend honored by Bernie Tan), Kim Blackburn (honored by Kevin Gunn), Patrick (last name unknown- was a nurse at Kaweah Delta hopsital, Visalia, CA)  and submitted by my cousin Jon Mullins, and the 1,000's of others who have died way, way too soon. They are all sincerely missed, yet not forgotten through this ride and your thoughtfulness!

Your tax-deductible pledge/donation helped me in supporting the HIV/AIDS-related services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. Together, we'll keep riding until HIV/AIDS, not those endearing loved one's lost to the pandemic, are a thing of the past.

With my heartfelt gratefulness for your support.

Om Shanti, Namaste,

Ran, rider #6021

Armed with the HERO CREED printed on 1800 red bandanas The HERO PROJECT was unleashed into the ALC community and quickly became an unprecedented success.

Lake Arrowhead, Labour Day wkend, no biking

Hello Everyone,

No biking this past weekend, I thought it was best to stay in recovery form that sore throat/cold.ful thing I had. It is much better and so my coworker Chuck and I drove up to his cabin in Lake Arrowhead Sat. night and returned today. I did some light hiking their and here in Hollywood to try and replace the biking, as well as yoga in Runyon Canyon Saturday morning before leaving town.

Lake Arrowhead was really nice, the smell of pine trees, as well as the swirling sounds of wind through the needles is just a relaxing sound and nothing quit like it. The weather was kind to us, the sun was out mostly, with some intermittent shade from passing clouds, as we boated about the lakeshore on some whitecaps and gazzing at all of the beautiful waterfront homes. Oh, and there were some handsome guys walking and boating about the lake areas, as well. In fact two I recall, one on a surfboard and the another in a kayake.

I was out several night's last week and thus the recovery was moving slowly in the right direction. I'm ready to return to the bike seat.

I hope you and ours had a very relaxing and low labour, Labour Day weekend.

Lot's of Love and Namaste,

Ran

Olympic holds and Summer flu's- My training on hold

What's this blog posting you might be thinking?

Hey friends and family,

I hope you enjoyed the Summer Olympics these past few weeks. I was a bit disappointed. In my opinion and from the perspective I witnessed, and even though we saw some amazing physical acheivements payoff for some great athletes, Phelps, Volt and the like, I was taken back by the out of balance reporitng by USA Sportscasters on NBC focus "way Too Much" attention solely on U.S. athletes. I tought Olympics sports was about athletes on the World Scale. I feel they portrayed the arrogant American, who's only concern was with USA athletes. That's my soap box on the Olympics.

I think the Greek Gods were getting back with me, because I came down with the flu symptoms on Friday, left work a bit early to rest before the "Donna Summer" (hence, Summer flu in title of my posting), concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The tickets were already purchased and though I should have stayed home, come on, Donna Summer!! She and her stage of performers and band were fun, enthusiastic and truly disco-shacking to watch! They rocked the house. Friends Paul, Roberto and Michael went with me, and I was able to see my very good, longtime friend Eli Soto, who I had not seen in years. He is a true, diehard Donna Summer fan!! There is no one more dedicated than he is. He and I joined up for breakfast  and hiked the next day up Runyon canyon. He was also able to view my ALC7 photo album, see my place and neighborhood.

Well, due to my flu, though I'm no where near deathly ill (throat more than anything), I missed the LAFR Saturday morning fun run, friend's Carl and Henri's Wedding reception, bike training ride I normally do Sunday mornings, as well as Sunday morning yoga and hike in Runyon Canyon. I even had to cancel my LAFR "Sunset Junction" beer booth volunteer responsibilities so that I can try and recover before work on Monday.  I tell you, summer flu's are no fun and never come at a good time. Come on "Airborne, IB prophen and other vitamins", heal me quickly!

Have a fabulous week Everyone.

Om Shanti, namste,

Life's Balance-beach, Wed. reception, bike/yoga/hike

Good Afternoon friends and family,

I had a really good week, filled with country dance night, several yoga classes indoors at the gym, with workouts and an indoor spin class, as well as yoga and hiking later in the week outside at the RC park. I also, joined my running club, LAFrontrunners for a day at the beach, Will Rogers beach (Santa Monica) on Saturday. Later that evening I made my way over to Pasadena to attend two friends of mine, Greg & Craig, who have now re-affirmed their vows 4 years consecutively and celebrated with having a sizeable group of friends and family at their home for potluck and BBQ. The variety of dishes was truly delicious, colorful and I was graced that everyone loved my tasteful fruit salad, made of honeydew and cantalope, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, mangoes and green figs, with dashes of cinnimon. I did however, skip the Spam sandwiches, yes you read that correctly. I do not do Spam since growing up and leaving my parents home decades ago. Spam appears to be quit popluar in Hawaiian culture, which is whrere Craig is from. I'm a Californian and I moved on away from such processed meats.

Sunday, I biked 19 miles from Hollywood to Griffith Park and back, needing to burn-off all that potluck food, then I attended yoga and hiked in RC, as well as sunned and soon I have an evening date with someone I know from the gym.

Everybody be happy and have wonderful week.

Om Shanti,

Namaste.

Two Rides, back to back, yahoo!

Hey Everybody,

I completed two rides, back to back this weekend. I haven't done that since the ride in early June. I attended the Pos Peds ride out of WeHo to Santa Monica (hot guys/gals on the San Vicente run/walk strip) on Saturday, great group of people and supportive training ride leaders too. On Sunday, my friend Paul and I rode over and then around the Hollywood Hills and Griffith Park. I also rode in a Spin class at the gym on Thursday night. Amazingly, I was able to attend 5 yoga classes, both indoor/outdoor, this week, from Monday-Sunday morning to keep myslef flexible and grounded spiritually. I am blessed. In addition, I hiked the RC (Runyon Canyon) in my hood a few times between Monday to Sunday/today. Oh, and let's not forget dancing at Oil Can Harry's last Tuesday.  Yes, I do work too, yet I like to try and enjoy my freetime with friends, LGBTQ communities and so I met friends for drinks and conversation during the week, Oil Can Harry's being one of the places. I hope you were able to make the most of you weekend and last week, if not, Monday begins another week and I think you can change most anything you put you mind, heart and soul into.

Dance, Hike, Yoga & Hollywood Bowl- I skipped the bike this weekend

Hello Everybody,

I can say that I let this weekend pass w/o riding my bike outside. However, I did attend one indoor spin class this week, so that accounts for something. In addition, to my past week, I danced with good friends at my favorite bar Oil Can Harry's and had a blast. In fact, I incorporated the Speed Flirting skills I learned in last weeks workshop at LAGLC and met some new folks. I attended 3-4 yoga classes, some indoor and some at Runyon Canyon, a fantastic outdoor yoga community space and the instructors that no one should do without. I've even turned a few friends and ex-lover onto RC yoga. One can also enjoy hiking in the RC with 3 main hiking trails with lot's of people watching opportunities for the sociologist in most of us. I enjoyed the Hollywood Bowl again with my cousin Jon, as we laughed at the Eric Idle (Monty Phython) and crew. And last but not least, I met my friend Al at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for Jane Fonda's "Barbarella". What a B movie and yet full of skin and laughs. Have a fantastic week.

H. Bowl w/family, biking/yoga/hiking- Reasons to be Thankful

Goodday Everyone,

I hope you and yours have had a rewarding and meaningful weekend and past week like I have. It is here on this blog, the only one I maintain, because I haven't ventured to MySpace, Facebook or many of the other internet blog post opportunities, just not my priority and time constraints. So, here it goes my past week and weekend in review, I hope you enjoy.

Tuesday evening, my cousin Jon and I attended the Hollywood Bowl and LAPhil orchestra perform "Mozart Under the Stars". this was my cousins first opportunity to attend a performance at the H. Bowl. We plan to attend another one together before the season ends in late September. The H. Bowl is an amazing venue, if you do not already know this, where you can bring a picnic basket, w/ your fav foods and beverages.

Wednesday evening, gym workout and yoga both, after a rewarding day at work conducting homeless outreach in various areas of L.A. County, targeting those who may have a moderate to severe mental illness.

Thursday evening, after gym workout, including indoor spin-cycling class, I attended my favorite bar, Oil Can Harry's, visiting and dancing CW music with friends. I have maintained this enjoyable hobby for about 17 years know. You shouldn't knock something if you haven't tried it. Come join me sometime!

Friday evening, gym workout and yoga, keeping myself in good practice, flexible/healthy, for all the physical fitness things I engage in these days. In addition, my former coworker invited me to attend "Speed Flirting" workshop at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. This workshop was  designed to help  LGBTQ people feel more comfortable and resilient when meeting/flirting with new people we meet at weddings, conferences, at gyms/bars/clubs, etc., and not feel destroyed by rejections, attitude. We learned how humor and the potential "no" response we often encounter when initially meeting others, can be responded with "Thank you for taking care of yourself". and then move one to someone else, w/o feeling negative about the situation. If you could have been there you woudl have enjoyed and learned some nice skills, as well as met some really nice people. I did!

Saturday, the LAFR running group and breakfast with friends followed-up later with another hike in Runyon Canyon. That evening, my friend Paul and I watched a gay Indy film, afterwords dinner at Bossa Nova, then met my other friend Al for drinks at MJ's, in Silverlake. Oh, and that go-go dancer Valentino was really hot.

Sunday, Paul and I rode 23.4 miles over and back across the Hollywood Hills, where we saw coyotes, cyclists, horse-back riders, runners, joggers, golfers, children playing (all things to be thankfull for) and some car drivers doing some risktaking, silly stuff. Then I returned to Runyon Canyon for yoga & another hike. Then, I met Stephen and his partner Neil and headed for lunch at Marix. Well, Stephen's car was rearended and we hit the car in front of us. So, needless to say, or lunch plans were delayed a bit and turned into early dinner plans. Thank goodness all of us are going to be OK, yet the cars didn't weather so well. Stephen's car looks to have suffered to brundt of the accident. Later, Margarita's and great food at Marix, West Hollywood, helped soothe our wounded/sore bodies and frazzled nerves.

Well, that is my past week in review.

Have a fabulous and safe week. Drive alert, for you and the drivers around all of us.

XOXO, Om shanti and namaste,

Ran

Outfest+ biking, yoga, & hiking this weekend

Hello Friends,

This was a really good weekend. It began on Friday evening, where I had  the pleasure adn invitation to join some Arriba Ski club members for screening of "Mulligan", an Outfest film at the Ford Amphitheatre. Nice venue and good film while being surrounded by an audience of 1,000 gay men. What more could one ask for! The Arriba guys were great also, and thank you Trey and kelly for the opportunity through my friend Paul. Saturday, I spent with LAFrontrunners, walking in the morning and breakfast, and later I hiked in my neighborhood Runyon Canyon and got some sun.  Sunday, I rode 21 miles  huffing over and back across the Hollywood hills, from Nichols Canyon, to Mullholland and then Forest lawn, over to Griffith Park on the Burbank side, then back over Garbage hill and the Griffith Park Observatory before returning to my home in Hollywood. Yoga in Runyon Canyon once I changed out of cyclng gear and into yoga fitting shorts and yoga mat. Then, I hiked again today in the Runyon Canyon. Ahhh- cross-training, cycle, yoga and hike, what could be finer! I hope you and yours have fabulous week.

Hollywd Hills, Pos Peds ride, yoga, hikes w/ friends

Hello friends,

This past weekend was a time for me to enjoy company with friends, fellow ALC riders on a training ride, for dinners/movies, hikes/yoga both in my Runyon Canyon area of Los Angeles and Hollywood, as I prepare to transition back from the "Project 50" 4.5 month assignment in downtown L.A. to my H.O.M.E. (Homeless Outreach Mobile Engagement) Team with Dept. of Mental Health here in Los Angeles (county-wide homeless outreach services). I was very fortunate to be around some great colleagues during my temp. post in Project 50, yet I am really ready to go back on the H.O.M.E. team. Well, as far as my weekend- I had a great ride with fellow ALC and Pos Peds riders on Saturday, 41+ miles over the hills of Hollywood, San Fernando Valley and into Santa Monica and back to west Hollywood, where we started from. That evening, friends James and Richard, paid for our delicious dinner at CPK, then we saw the movie "Kabluey" and I hope you try to see the film. Sunday, friends Paul, Roberto and I hiked Runyon Canyon, then Paul and I did yoga in the park, as well. Later, we went to a bear bust at the Faultline, followed by dinner and two Outfest screenings. One was a full feature film, the others were several movie shorts. Today, Monday was the end of my transition weekend, where I took care of my self, a mental health day (no worries, it's all good) and no I didn't overdo the beer bust. I hope you and yours were able to make the most of your weekend, and that you're living your dreams to their fulliest.

Hollywd Hills ride, yoga, hike & Dance

Hey Everyone,

This was a great weekend, I look forward to summin' it up here for you. I shared my ALC7 photo album with more LA Frontrunners members at the Saturday morning fun run and breakfast. Later, I had a nice hike up Runyon Canyon in my hood, for sun and good health then stopped by "Out of the Closet" for some fine, recycled clothing before taking myself out for a movie at The Grove, "Get Smart". Sunday morning, Roberto and I had an awesome 18+ miles ride over and back across the Hollywood Hills to Burbank/Warner Bros. studios, into Griffith Park and back to Hollywood. At noon he and I rejoined to attend a yoga class at Crunch, in WeHo. Really good instructor, Donovan and handsome too. Afterwards, I went for another hike up Runyon Canyon before reconnecting with friends at the movies. This time, an Indy, "Expired", interesting, heavy sort of movie, the kind you could discuss about the characters afterwards. Then, as if I haven't had enough yet, I took myself to my favorite, and ALC fundraising bar "Oil Can Harry's" in Studio City. Now I'm back home, exhausted and ready to say good night. Consequently, I made it home safely from OCH's a motorcyclist wasn't so lucky. He apparenty had been involved in an accident before I left the bar, just up the street. A crowd of people were already around him and the Fire Dept. was already sending a truck. Prayers and thoughts with him. Be Careful out their this week in you commutes and travels Everyone!

Shifting Gears ride- S.M. to Hermosa Bch. & backk

Hello Everyone,

This is my 2nd training ride of the ALC8 season. Can't believe I'm already referencing to ALC8, yet why the heck not! The group, Shifting Gears, is a great bunch of folks to ride with, who mostly ride on the westside, Santa Monica, Palos Verde, etc. Today we rode from Santa Monica's Helen's Cyclery to Hermosa beach and back. We stopped in Hermosa to eat breakfast together, almost 50 riders, before making our way back to Santa Monica. It was warmand sunny today, yet drinking enough water so most of us were just fine. I heard one of the riders crashed and was really injured, yet I do not know the details or if she was an experienced rider. Our thoughts are with her that she will recover soon. This is all for now.

Namaste,

Ran

1st training ride in the ALC8 season- Paul, thanks 4 inspiring me to ride

Hey Friends, My friend Paul W. asked me earlier in the week if I wanted go bike riding with him on Sunday June 15th, to do research for his upcoming ski club beach/ride outting. I said, let me think about it at first,  then I was glad to have my great friend to offer a cool ride from Beverlywood to Hermosa and back and said YES!!

It was a nice day to ride and we lunched in Hermosa Beach before turning around to come back to Beverlywood, where we started. There were some nice sights, hot guys in beach trunks, on bikes, with surfboards, running, and/or playing volleyball just to name a few activities/places both. We saw some great family scenes, as well. Kids with parents enjoying the beach bike path, bikes with training wheels, as well as people w/pets. Most of the great things I love about Los Angeles and it's beaches. We completed 34 miles before it was all said and sight experienced.

Have a great week all of you wonderful people.

We are Here- Riding to END AIDS!!

Hello Everybody, This is probably my last entry before we begin our wonderful, inspirational and dedicated journey from SF to LA, down the coastline of California to bring HIV/AIDS Awareness to the communities that embrace our presence, communitites that know how important our visibility is in the fight to reduce HIV infections, as well as to provide vital servcies to so many in need (who cannot afford the prices of pharmacutical drugs in today's world economy). I am so happy to have such supportive friends, and family who have supported me in this journey.

YOU ARE GOING ALONG WITH ME ON THIS RIDE, EVERYONE ONE OF YOU, BECAUSE OF YOUR HEARTFELT THOUGHTS AND GENEROUSITY AND LOVE!!

God bless all of you, Namaste and PLEASE SAY A FEW PRAYERS THAT ALL OF US WILL COMPLETE THIS RIDE UNSCATHED, other than two very tired legs!!

SINCERELY,

Happy Memorial Day and happy trainings!

Hello folks,

I hope everybody is having a fabulous Memorial Day weekend?, that you are enjoying the holiday with rememberance for our Veteran's, and our loved one's lost, either by health, natural causes or other various circumstances.  Times like this are about thinking of those we have been honored to know, either directly or indirectly, or that we have a common bond (The bigger Village here on Mother Earth).

This weekend's of rides are bringing us nearer still, full circle, from the beginning of our training season and the community of support we have built to the actual event "AIDSLifeCycle" that begins next weekend, Sunday June 1st. Reflections on Saturday evening after the days ride and in conversations with my cousin Jon, about our families, grandparents- parents (some who have passed on), to riding through West L.A.'s Veteran's cemetary today both prompted me to address remeberance, as well as why we do this ride- for all those lost to HIV/AIDS! I miss all of them- grandparents, my cousins parents (for him, as well), the many friends mentioned on my home page letter, and the Veteran's and civilians who have died due to WARS! WAR is so terrible, few of us have personal, direct accounts of living in war torn areas, including me.

I had not seen my cousin in years (we're just months apart in age), we just began arrangements to rekindle and strengthen our family bond, thanks to Jon recently sending me a belated birthday card and note with interest to meet and become reacquianted after so many years and distance. I am very thankful for his reaching out with his attempt to reconnect and I look forward to many more opportunities in the future. And Jon, thank you for your pledges an support this year, 1st time donorship- yahoo!

Saturday- I joined the "Chain Gang" for a 22 miles bike ride, followed by a fantastic packing workshop. Thank you Chain Gang training ride leaders, without your leadership, and presence on this ride, so many of us would be placed in harms way and be ill-prepared to have a succesful ride. Kudos to Chain Gang!

Sunday- I participated in the "Easton Gym- Joy and Sue" training ride, for 34 miles today. Joy and Sue have been just as dedicated to providing the AIDSLifeCycle rider community with deligent, fun and uncompromising support. You gals are awesome! Thank you both for your leadership and for providing a safe, fun group to ride with, and Easton Gym, for all your support to the riders.

Not sure, but I may be riding on Monday (Memorial Day), as well. A short 20+ miles ride.

Everyone, have a wonderful, safe holiday and next week (4 days work week) yippy!

Namaste,

HOT rides in the City,.... feelin' sweaty & really sticky

Two very hot training rides this weekend and I'm so glad I bailed out of the Mulholland 1/2 Century (very hot region of west L.A./Ventura counties).

Saturday, I did my own local ride up Nichols Cyn., over Mulholland (Hollywood), to Caheunga pass (101fwy), to Burbank, Warner Bros. Studios, into Griiffith Pk. and pony ride area, reversed back to the golf course and up over "garbage hill" to the Griffith Pk. Obseratory, where I took in a small snack at "Cafe Trails" before returning home in Hollywood. This was about a 27 miles ride, with 2 good size hills.

My fundraising party at my friend Al's home in Van Nuys was very enjoyable, and I'm so glad that those who were able to stop by, even for a short time, were able to come say hello, give a pledge and/or committed to donate online in the coming days. Thank you dear friends and special supporters who remember and honor the memory of Paul LePierre, former owner of my Kestrel bicycle and longtime volunteer of LAGLC!

Sunday, I joined Joy & Sue's ride from Easton Gym to Brentwood/Santa Monica Cityline, accomplishing both Bundy Cyn., and Mandeville Cyn., with some very good ALC training ride friends Greg and Stephen, as well as joined by Roberto, a first time rider. We stopped at Noah's Bagels (w/w bagel w/humus-mmm good) for a small bite before making our way up the two canyon rides.  This ride was 46 miles, with some good hill work.

Not two shabby of training rides for such a hot weather weekend in the southland.  Right now it's about riding smart, not over doing ourselves by riding in challenging weather conditions- rehydration, proper/consistent meals/snacks, rest and a bit of social life fun. That's coming up later this evening.

Two weeks to the day before "WE RIDE TO END AIDS", Sunday June 1st from San Fran, and bike into L.A. on Saturday June 7th, (L.A. Pride weekend).

XOXO and Namaste,

Ran

SM to Latigo Cyn, Easton ride to see "Chicken Lady"

Saturday's ride involved riding from Hollywood where I reside, and my neighbor Stephen also joined me on our trek to the start of the Latigo Canyon ride leaving out of Santa Monica, CA. the weather was cool, yet best for riding outside. The PCH is a tretcherous course and with the unexpected resurfacing project, all of us riders "got the Total Body message of our lives"! Then we stopped at Cross Creek for coffee/pastries before heading towards Latigo Canyon road turnoff. This road up involves 10 miles of switchback hill work, just what we needed so as to know where we are  in our training. I survived without leg cramps this years. The views were spectacular, unfortuantely, this area was devestated by the fires last year.

Sunday, we rode from Hollywood to the start, near the Beverly Center @ Easton Gym. We made our way to Culver City, then MDR and PDR beach communities before making our way to the destination of the home of "The Chicken Lady". He was so pleased, and excited to see all of us. I am so happy I was able to be a part of this very important ride. Ken recently suffered a stroke and may not be riding with us this year, or he may be able to help at the lunch stops on this year's ride. He has ridden in "31" AIDS RIdes around the U.S. and world, so you can imagine he would not want to ever miss an ALC ride.

Everyone, have a safe, fun and fabulous week ahead.

Who's that hunky ALC rider who works at Maggiano's (The Grove)

Ok, this is my one and only slutty training blog, yet I really added some training informatiion so you (the reader) will not be too disappointed (follows later, after slut story).  My really good friend Paul and I went to Maggiano's, The Grove, after the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", a metifore for other things in my life recently. Oh my, that handsome (brunette, great hair, facial hair goatie, nice bod- single status unsure) ALC rider works in the restaurant, as the host. I was too shy to go over and say something, anything, like " We missed you, I missed you on the training ride today (Sunday), did you ride today?" No, I didn't have the guts and besides I was their to have a drink with my really good friend Paul.  Well, I'll just have to re-introduce myself at the next training ride the two fo us attend. May that ride be right around the corner, afterall tomorrow's a New Day!

Okay for the weekend's rides- 1) Saturday's ride from Griffith Pk. to Pasadena, with Doreen's and Tony's fabulous training advice we had a great 72.3 miles ride.  The views, homes that we judged for archtecture, landscape, upkeep and the like to the hot, some not so hot guys and gals added to the distractions of the day. I went to see the movie "Made of Honor", starring Patrick Dempsey (McDreamy, Grey's Anatomy) with James and Richard that evening. Training rider friends- Greg, Tracy, Bill, Brian, thank you guys for a safe, fun ride.

2) Sunday's 50 miles Santa Monica to Palos Verde and back was also a cooler day, schuck's, because too many beach going guys were covered up in wetsuits (surfer dudes), or just not out in high numbers to be seen as we rode past. But, there were a few really great views, of guys, some homes and other great ALC riders. I rode with some very special friends today, great to see Randy Kroeger from my 1st ALC doing the ride again this year, Greg my training friend, Tracy and Jaunne. Thank you Everyone, for making this weekend of rides safe, fun and rewarding.

Have a nice, safe, memorable week everyone.

Pasadena to Claremont, Easton Gym to S.M. rides

Today, Saturday, we had some very supportive TRL's, Kar, Viona, Pedro, Allen and others to help us make a safe trek from Pasadena (the Rose Bowl), all the way to Claremont and back to the bowl.  This was a 77 miles round trip training ride on a very warm day. The views were mainly of city scapes, beautiful homes and towards our way back from Claremont we witnessed the beginning and building of the forest fire on the hillsides overlooking Arcadia. Very scary for the residence who live in the area, as well as the firefighters coming to fight the fires/flames (not us on our bikes). I know what you were thinking, we are a very butch bunch of bikers, well some of us are!

Another interesting scene, was when we waited for a green light for a left turn around San Dimas, this group of swimmers from the local high school were conducting a Saturday carwash to raise money. Two of them were so cute in their Speedo type red plaid swimsuits that some of us almost took them up on their discount offer for cyclists bike wash. Nope, i'll bet underage and would get us in trouble, but the scene was like something  from West Hollywood and they were getting honks from everyone passing by. In a couple of years we'll see them in West Hollywood at the gay bars.

Sunday, I plan to ride the Easton Gym to Santa Monica, through Bel Air and possibly up  the 6 mile trek of Mandeville Canyon, if I can muster the strength after today's hot, blistering and long trek.

I hope you and yours are having as much fun as I am training with all these wonderful, inspiring ALC7 riders (Veteran's and newbee's alike).

A Day On The Ride, A weekend of X-trng.

Hey Folks,

We are just 6 weeks away from this year's ride and the "Day On The Ride" event this Saturday (Santa Monica to Palos Verde, San Pedro, Carson & back to S.M.) was very necessary to build on my training regimen and try to keep up with everyone's else's training regimen. It was so rewarding, fun and comforting to see so many familiar ALC faces at the Saturday event and riding along with me, as well. 79.3 miles is what my odometer read after I returned to the car parking lot. The day started out cool, brisk, good paced, full of anticipation (of the newbees, 1st time riders) for who've never yet experienced the yearly AIDSLifeCycle event. Stephen, thanks for riding along for support and encouragement. Today, Enver, Kevin and I rode Nichols Cayon, to Cahuenga Canyon, Burbank, over Griffith park (garbage hill), before returing to Hollywood, another 22+ mile day of riding and freindships. I came home, attended outdoor yoga,  and a hike in Runyon Canyon.

Today, I give thanks for good health, and peace.

Have a rewarding week and Namaste,

Ran

Oil Can Harry's Party was a success, $625+!!

I want to thank a whole lot of people for helping make our "Country Hoedown at Oil Can Harry's  (OCH)" a huge success for our fundraising efforts. Together, we raised over $624, $208 each, through raffle tickets sales, and Bob, the owner of the bar gave each of us 3 riders another cash gift. Some of our raffle item sponsors included businesses (contact person): the Center Theatre Group (Patrick Owen), LAGLC- Cultural Arts Dept. (Matt Walker, Jon Imparato), Agraria of San Fransisco (Richard Manville), N2N Bodywear (Andrew Makay),  Dragonfly (Noel Busby), Petula- bodyworks, Marie Calendars, Sweet Chili Thia, Red-white and Blue restaurant, Satiar Indian restaurant, HairInLA salon, and all the help from volunteers Craig, Bob and Toni. In addition, the awesome staff of Oil Can Harry's- Bob 1 and Bob2, Tommy, Bill, Rick, Stephen, AIDSLifeCycle and LAGLC staff ( Vince, J.R., Kevin, Alton), ALC training ride leaders Doreen and Tony, his partner Zeth and I hope I'm not missing anyone.  Oh yes, all of our OCH and LAFR friends, colleagues, spin class instructor (Bob) and coworkers who came out to support us, by bringing cash, and your fun energy. We so appreciated everyone's presences and support in helping bring vital HIV/AIDS services to so many clients of the LAGLC. My sincere gratitude, Ran rider #6021.

PS- I hiked and attended yoga in Runyon Canyon Saturday, as I was too tired to go on a training ride. Today, Sunday, I rode in the Chain Gang ride out of Griffith Park. The day became too hot to continue on for the entire 70 miiles ride including La Tuna Canyon, so most of us settled with the 50 miles ride from G.P., to Pasadena, San Marino, Verdugo, parts of Burbank and Glendale before returning to Griffith Park. A terrific group of people, including training ride leaders who provided the "best" assistance, and encouragement. Greg, my training ride buddy and I rode the entire 50 miles together.

Santa Monica-Palos Verde ride, 58 miles

Greetings Everyone, on Saturday I pushed myself a bit harder on the training ride with a faster pace than I usually keep. Though I had a really nice ride, with a great group of ALC riders, the day was filled with 58 miles of spectacular oceanviews, the ocassional surfer (in and out of wetsuit), firemen running on the beach, children/parents on bicycles too, road kill and the much needed munchy breaks. Yet, today, Sunday, I decided to rest, update my training blog and prepare for the seasonal, yearly duties of tax preparation. If only so much of our hard earned monies didn't go to this "Wrongful War" in Iraq, but that's a whole other topic that I wish not to write about here! I hope all is well with you and yours, make the most of your daytime hours, try to achieve proper sleep these days, and Namaste,

TWO GREAT RIDES this past weekend

Dear friends. it was awesome to see so many familar faces and meet many more great people during this weekends two training rides that I attended. Saturday's was the Culver City to the Bel Air Post Office ride up to Mulholland Drive. 28 miles of riding (1 major hill) with some very dedicated training ride leaders, such as Martin K., and others. On Sunday, I rode the Westwood/Helen's Cyclery to Paols Verde with "Shifting Gears" group and many others (Beth, Doreen, Sonya just to name a few). I happen to ride most of this day's 59 route miles with Larry and Nick (both 1st time riders in ALC). Yeah Newbee's! these guys are real troopers and tackled those Palos Verde hills with gusto and determination. This was my first back to back weekend of training rides and it gives me a total of 87 miles in two days. Oh, and also part of my weekly routine was an indoor SPIN class, 3 yoga classes, weight-training, and last but not least, many memorable moments spent with my personally valued, dear friends (Paul, Al, Enver, and others) and getting to know a little bit better my ongoing, as well as new ALC family members. That's it from the training perspective for today. I hope you have a very memorable and happy week.

Namaste,

PROJECT 50- Housing the 50 most vulnerable in Skid Row, L.A.

Hello friends, my passion to help others is not only displayed in my relentless dedicaton to AIDSLifeCycle each year, but also in the field of work I do. I recently began working for Los Angeles County, Dept. of Mental Health on the "Project 50". Together, several county departments and non-project organizatoins have already identifed, now currently locating and offering assistance with housing the 50 most vulnerable people living homeless in Skid Row, downtown L.A. The Project 50 team has already helped house about 18 people of the 50 slots reserved for this project. Of those, one wanted to return to Mexico, another was in need of a nursing facility. If these people have income, 1/3 of their income is required to pay their rent. The project also provides full wrap around and integrated case management services so that these people have the best possible support for long-term success in the project. This is very rewarding work and these deserving people have really appreciated this amazing opportunity to get in off the streets to apartment housing. This doesn't mean the transition is going to be easy for most of them, in part, due to long histories of homelessness, alcohol/substance use and in some cases various degrees of mental health issues. Keep these people in your thoughts for their success. Namaste, Ran

Bikes+bumps=breakdowns+bussing home

Okay, I was planning on a fabulous ride with the Pos Peds from West Hollywood to Malaga Cove (Pales Verdes) and back. However, the Balona Creek path from Culver City to Marina Del Rey (MDR) had other things in store for me that Saturday the 8th. Low and behold that "little bump" of a transition from concrete to blacktop on the path west of Lincoln Blvd., caused a rear wheel spoke to come undone and the back wheel to tweak out of trune (out of shape). It was like someone beyond my control was applying the back break every wheel rotation. I received much support from other riders and training rider leaders (big thank you guys/gals), however, none of us knew how to trune a wheel nor had a car in our hip pockets. I encouraged them to ride on and I carried my bike 200+ yards to the Santa Monica Blue bus stop at Fiji Way/Lincoln Blvd. The 1st bus bike rack was full and they rode past me. The 2nd SM bus got me to downtown S.M., along with a man speaking to me in Spanish and advising me on certain buses to take back to Hollywood. From that stop I rode another S.M. bus to UCLA (bus terminal) before using the latreen at the UCLA bookstore (busier than any Target store) before I peed in my biking shorts (not a pretty image). Once LA Metro bus got going I made it back to Hollywood at Sunset/Poinsettia and I carried my bike and I uphill on Fuller street another 3 city blocks. I was exhausted from 3 hours with bussing from MDR to Hollywood, probably moreso than the intended 50 mile ride I had hoped to complete the same day. My shoulders are still sore this evening from carrying/aternating the bike on both my collar bone shoulder areas. You know, there's times when an extra tire tube or bike pump will not suffice like a glass of wine that I'm sipping on right now!

Have a better week than my Saturday was.

Namaste, Ran

Pasadena-Chain gang ride

I enjoyed a great group of people, the Chain Gang and other ALC riders, on a very sucky-drizzly day (weatherwise only). I have to say the weather could have been better, yet the group of riders made for a very supportive and friendship of a wonderful day. We rode some 50 miles- starting in east Pasadena,  to upper Altadena, west over to Verdugo Hills (passing around the Rose Bowl), through South Pasadena before winding our way back through San Marino and the the start location in east Pasadena. The entire day was a very cool/damp 57-61 degress and overcast, drizzling or misty at times which gave us some exposure to the first day of the ride in June. I attended a spin class, the usual Thursday night routine, as well as some yoga and workouts at the gym this past week. I hope you and yours have a fabulous week. Om Shanti, Namsate. Rancycle

Dear Friends, your support keeps me inspired

Honestly, all you support and encouragement is very touching, as I seriously tear up thinking that all of you are really helping me to train and to stay motivated. For example, just this past week of training, I attended an indoor spin class Thursday night, Saturday a n ALC training ride is chilly temperatures from I Martin's bike shop in the Fairfax area to Playa Del Rey and back, as well as I attended another spin class on Sunday, yoga classes were in their somewhere, as well. AND- my Fundraising tools are growing/increasing, this means I can focus on training when caring people like "YOU" know what an impact HIV/AIDS has had on so many people, regardless of sexual orientation. BTW, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center nor S.F. AIDS Foundation discriminate when providing HIV services to individuals.

Have a great week all of you!

A Support statement from dear friend Bill W.

"I so admire you for this undertaking and acknowledge your spirit, courage, giving and love. It is a great lift to me that there are angels out there in our day to day lives making such a difference for those so in need and in memory of so many people who were lost forever long before they really got started. Although I would like you to remember my father's half brother, Donald Winkelman on your list, I would like you to ride in honor of Brent Nicholson Earle, the founder of the American Run of End AIDS (AREA), a most worthy friend and angel like yourself who absolutely NEVER stops working to promote education about AIDS and has a very long list of names he reads of those he lost. Thank you for accepting my meager donation. It is merely a building lock of others whom I hope will contribute. Together Everyone Achieves More by working together. Namaste, Bill Winkelman".  Bill, I couldn't continue doing this ride if it weren't for true heros like yourself helping inspire me to keep cycling every year and your donation is far from meager. My Love, respect and heartfelt gratitude (as tears well-up in my eyes), Ran

Triathalon training- bike, hike and bathtub soak!

This weekend, the President's Day weekend was a bit chilly and thus to continue my recovery from my headcold, I ran in Griffith Park with LAFrontrunners Saturday, Sunday yoga in Runyon Canyon, Monday bike ride 26.6 miles from Hollywood to Burbank and back and I will follow-up the Runyon Canyon hike I just finished with a soaking in the bathtub. Triathalon training has it's privileges and perks. Friends, Your support is Awesome and I cannot thank you enough helping me get my fundraising off to a strong start. Today, I count my blessings for your thoughtful support, my health and peace in the community in which most of us live.

Star Tours ride-I think I spotted Brad Pitt....

Hello fellow Angelenos,

Upon our return trip from Santa Monica Pier, the Star Tour training group- Tom and Juan, our very supportive TRL's- we spotted a handome guy walking/jogging with his dog on Whittier near Wilshire Blvd. (Beverly Hills), no, not Jethro of the Hillbilly's! Okay, he wasn't Brad Pitt, but I bet I intrigued you to read on! He was just as hot and it's the little pleasentries on the training rides that add to the fun, social aspects of these rides. We rode 30 plus miles from West Hollywood Park, through Bel Air, Brentwood and Santa Monica, before working our way back to Weho. All of us made it back safely and with a bit more training to our training season. Have a great week everyone and Namaste,

I Martin's/Chain Gang's ride today-Awesomely great group

Chain Gang, TRL's and all the familar and new faces in today's ride- Mandeville Canyon and Bundy were just killers because I haven't done a hilly ride since November (Hollywood-Garbage Hill). The 45 miles round trip from our home, up two major climbing hills and back to Hollywood was very well needed in our training regimen. The ALC community is coming together due to such passionate people who have been touched by this AIDSLifecycle movement and by HIV/AIDS in some way. Thanks Everyone for a fabulous ride today. We are all involved in an amazing event, a movement of sorts and when we place our energies together "We Can" accomplish great, meaningful and humanly spiritual things. Oh, and let's thank mother nature for giving us a dry Saturday to go on a training ride. Om Shanti, Namaste.

Greetings Friends, and loved one's,

Today's Easton Gym Team training ride leaders and my weekly spin classes help keep me conditioned. Joy and Sue, you two TRL's are fabulous and great to ride with. Thank you both and you fellow riders for making today's ride very enjoyable and safe. My very good friend Paul sponsored my partner and my account's this week. Yahoo, thank you Paul.
