I'm Riding to End AIDS

What a difference a year makes.

Last year, I did “The Ride” to deal with my grief about the death of my friend, Doug Blasdell. This year, on Sunday June 1st, I am riding again, not only to honor his spirit but to continue something very important that began for me as I pedaled the 545-mile distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles. When I set out on that journey, I never imagined that I would do it again. In fact, I seriously doubted whether I could complete it the first time. But I made a promise to try, and, in return, you generously supported me. And try I did – then, something very special took hold.  Despite the rigors of sleeping in a tent for  6 nights, waking up at 4:30 a.m. and riding until I thought I could ride no further, I began to see each day as a gift and realized how blessed I was to be in a position to receive it.

Thanks to you, out of 2,800 participants, I was the 5th highest fundraiser with a total of $36,000. In all, we managed to raise 11 million dollars (67% of which went directly to those in need).  With vital funding cut by the current Administration, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center needs such outside help to implement their non-discriminatory programs that are so important in our community: Medicine for H.I.V. treatment, education, and basic clinic services.

There were so many times on my Trek 1000 bicycle (a generous gift from Maryland Ouye, Ken and Kim Miyake) when I wanted to stop (quit, actually), but I continued on, bolstered by the enthusiasm and dedication of the other participants and by my determination to aid this important cause. At the top of every hill, my friend and coach, Geo Nicol, stood with a group of cheerleaders to greet me as I arrived. I cannot adequately convey how it felt to climb an impossible hill and then look back down to see what I had just accomplished. This year, I know what is ahead and I have signed on again. Though the experience was the most emotionally and physically challenging of my life, it taught me something important about myself: the need to push beyond my fears and known limits.

I know you receive many requests of this nature, but I come to you once again, asking you to join me in this important ride—a ride of a lifetime that I hope to repeat as long as I can. I will keep my promise to complete the ride again. In turn I ask that you please match or, if possible, increase your last year’s donation. And, if you are so inclined, could you kindly pass this letter on to a friend?

Thank you for your generous support and your kind, encouraging wishes.
