Lisa's Journey

Hi Everyone!

From June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

I've always wanted to run a marathon or participate in an athletic event for a cause, and now I have the chance to do so! I first got into riding my bike two summers ago. I would ride all around Oak Park, and even to run errands (i.e. picking up a few groceries). I probably appeared very strange to some people but I really enjoy riding my bike everywhere! In Berkeley, everything's a lot closer, so I can ride to the grocery store in 5 minutes--about the time it takes one family to pile in a mid-size 4-door. The thing I enjoy most about biking is that it doesn't create pollution of any kind, and it's a healthy form of exercise. For those of you who know me..you probably are aware of my love for everything "green." If you had your doubts (which I'm sure you didn't) about me being a "hardcore environmentalist", this is proof! I'll do just about anything to promote a green lifestyle and to benefit a good cause.

Training is pretty fun and I really enjoy the long rides on my new hybrid bike. I am eccstatic about this ride to LA! I hope you all can find it in yourselves to donate to this cause. I really believe that this money can make a huge difference in the lives of millions. Your support would mean so much to me, but even more to those who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

I wish you all healthy, happy lives!

Love,

Lisa<3

Chicago!

I'm in Chicago right now, with my a cappella group! It's amazing! It snowed the first day and now it's semi-snowing. I've had so much fun with all of them! We saw some sights and sang at different venues, and it's been really really fun! We're leaving at 4am tomorrow, so I'm probably just not going to sleep. I'm hoping that we're not snowed in. I really don't want to be stuck at the airport! That would be awful!!!

I can't wait to get back on my bike! I miss it! I worry about it, even when it's in my apartment! It's a kind of paranoia that I can't get over. It will subside with time..probably.

I also think I want to go to the bike expo on Sunday. It sounds amazing!!

My NEW used bike!!!

Wow! So I just got my new used bike, that Scott built me! It's incredible! I"m amazed at how much better it fits me than the bike I bought that was stolen. I'm absolutely in love with it! it's perfect I'm going to post a picture--that's how happy I am with it! I'm sooo appreciative of Scott for taking the time to do this! He really knows his stuff! First thing to do now...REGISTER MY BIKE!!! I am going to document every single part on it!

Until next time..

loving life

I am very happy right now. I just got back from my intramural volleyball game, and we WON!!! It was great! We all played very scrappily, and we were very together! So, this weekend I went on two bike rides. One was from Civic Center Bart to Amelia's house, and the other was around Emeryville. Both were great, but the SF ride had incredible scenery, whereas the emeryville ride was basically through warehouses and ugliness. But, all is well because I enjoyed both! For the first time this semester, I feel on top of things. I think I'm managing my time well so far, and I'm having a lot of fun.

This Friday, we're performing two songs in a show, called A Cappella Against AIDS! It's on the UCB campus, in case anyone's interested in attending. It's at 8pm in 155 Dwinelle. It's a collection of groups from UCCE and independent ones as well. It'll be really nice. I was in the show last year for Women's Chorale, but this year is going to be so much better, since I'm with DeCadence (my current a cappella group)!!! Hooray! I love them! They're all such amazing people! I don't ever want them to graduate!

Well, I should get back to homework now. Or perhaps sleep..yeah, that sounds good.

the rational lisa

Well, I suppose I'm calmer now. I've been crying for almost a day and my eyes can't take it anymore. I wish I could just find my bike--magically. But this life lesson grounded me. I've mostly been living in a dream world..full of optimism and sunshine. I still have that optimism, but I'm very aware of the hate and crime and sadness in the world. And I'm also aware of the suffering that others endure. In the past two months: my friend's sorority sister's apartment burned down in an electrical fire; a local Berkeley ALC rider who was supposed to lead a ride yesterday got in a bike accident and broke a collarbone; and my friend's boyfriend lost his little brother in a car accident. There's so much sadness in the world, and today, I cried for everyone. I cried for myself (a lot) and I cried for humanity. I couldn't stop thinking about everyone and all the shit that they have to endure. It's not fair for most people. But I am a true believer of karma. I believe that if I'm a good person, in the end I will be rewarded. It won't be happiness and rainbows all the time, but I'll be able to say that I lived and loved freely. I will stick with the ride. Luckily, I'll probably be able to get another bike, so I can keep this commitment to myself and to the AIDS/HIV victims. I would much rather have lost a bike than my support group of friends. They mean everything to me..and had it not been for them taking care of me in my sorrow, today, I would not have been able to recover so quickly. Thank you to everyone who's been supporting me today as well as throughout my life. Relationships are what count, not material goods. I'd rather have a room full of friends than a room full of stuff;)

I HATE THIEVES!!!!!

THIEVES SHOULD ROT AND BURN IN HELL!!!

my bike was just stolen. i was in rehearsal with my a cappella group from 7pm-9:30pm tonight, and someone cut the cord that i had used for extra security straight through..my entire bike was gone. they didn't leave even a wheel..and the u-lock still in tact. i'm soo sad right now..i've been crying for an hour. i was attached to that bike more than anything and i only rode it to school twice. i've only had it for 9 days..it was brand new. i hate thieves. i wish i could take everything back about riding to school and thinking it was safe to use on campus. i hate myself for being so trusting. i just wish i could have my bike back:..(

sad and depressed,

conquering huge hills

On Sunday morning, I rode to Tilden Park with my friend and ALC buddy, Amelia. We had to climb really steep grades, but it felt great once we finally reached the top. I almost feared the downhill more than the uphill...

until my next long ride..

my first spin class this year!

I just returned from spin class about half an hour ago. I sure do sweat a lot. It's such an intense workout for your legs. I feel like I can do anything after that class! The hills of Berkeley seem like a walk in the park--well, at least for tonight.

I'll keep you updated on training. This weekend is the REI used gear sale..equipment/clothes/etc. goes for 50-70% off!!! I can't wait! Maybe I'll get some good quality gloves and spandex. Sitting on a bike seat for 7 days straight seems a bit overwhelming right now...

I'd love to chat more, but homework is calling me..
