Pittsburg resident Richard Conn will join 2,500 cyclists and 500 volunteer "roadies" on AIDS/LifeCycle 7, an epic seven-day, 545-mile journey down the California coast to raise support for HIV/AIDS prevention and care. At 81, Conn will be the ride's senior participant, pedaling an average of 80 miles a day.
Richard Conn, a retired nurse practitioner, worked at a San Francisco hospice. One of his first AIDS patients used a small bell to call his partner for assistance. When the patient died, the partner gave Conn the bell as a remembrance. The bell continues to inspire Conn's desire to do something about AIDS. His own partner, Joy Gunn, will accompany Conn on the ride.
Conn is training regularly now for AIDS/LifeCycle 7, which will occur June 1st -- 7th.
For the next two months, Conn is participating in AIDS/LifeCycle training rides throughout the Bay Area. Then, on the ride itself, he'll ride along California's beautiful hills and coast, from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
Worldwide, 33.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, including more than 1 million Americans. In San Francisco, almost 19,000 are HIV-positive--the highest number since the beginning of the crisis--and the city usually experiences approximately 1,000 annual new infections.
