Roadie Teams and Descriptions

Advance Teams

Advance Set-Up A&B: Works closely with Logistics staff to set up camp one day in advance of the Riders' arrival. Sets up sleeping tent "grid," all tables and chairs in dining area and service tents, and works with tent vendor to erect all tents. Should be able to lift 50+ lbs.

Route Marking: (CLOSED) This team is divided into three parts -- all should be able to lift 30 lbs. Advance Route Marking: typically begins marking the next day's route by 2pm each day. Attention to detail is key, as the Riders will rely upon route marking to find their way along the day's route.

Route Marking Fix-It: (CLOSED) This group circulates the route each day, addressing problem areas where signage might be insufficient or needing replacement. Works closely with Road Dispatch staff to facilitate these problem areas.

Route Marking Clean-Up: This group follows behind the Caboose, picking up all route marking signage, and organizing it so that it can be redistributed back to the Advance Route Marking group for use again that following day.

Camp Based Teams

Bike Parking: (CLOSED) This team is responsible for setting up and managing the bike parking area in camp. Involves checking in each rider as they enter camp each evening and checking them out upon the morning departure. This team also assists with any "bike pulls" necessitated for medical or other issues. This team also must set up and break down bike racks for the event each day as the Camp moves along the route. Should be able to lift 40 lbs.

Bike Tech: This team will work with our Bike Tech Sponsor as necessary to assist in maintenance and repair of bikes as necessary. This can be in Camp or along the route at rest stops. Where repairs are impossible, the Event Bike Tech Sponsor may offer loaner bikes to use. Team members should have experience in bicycle repair and should be able to lift 50 lbs.

Camp Services: (CLOSED) This is the information team. Camp Services is the place that participants go for any details they might need regarding camp set-up, route questions, messages, directions, concerns or simply to meet friends or visitors. This team checks all visitors in and out of camp each day, and manages Lost & Found. Should be able to lift 20 lbs.

Food Service: (CLOSED) This team serves breakfast and dinner cafeteria style, 3:45am until 8am and 3:45pm until 9:00pm. Must be able to stand for two to three hours at a time. Working on the Food Service team is a great way to meet and see all involved with the ride - roadies, cyclists, staff, evening entertainers and the stage.

Camp Merchandise: (CLOSED) This Team is responsible for the set up and management of the Merchandise Tent. This requires lifting and transporting boxes of merchandise. Must be able to lift 40+ lbs.

Camp Signage: (CLOSED) This team is responsible for the placement of signage around Camp. Includes hanging signs on Service Tents as well as placement of Sandwich Boards and Directional signage. Helpful if able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Traffic: (CLOSED) Responsible for managing vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic into and out of camp. Checks in all vehicles, allowing only those that are permitted to be on-site with the event. Enforces parking plans established by the Logistics Team. Should be able to lift 25 lbs.

Gear & Tent: (CLOSED) This team manages the collection and distribution of all participant gear and tents throughout the event. Team will load all gear into trucks each morning, then off-load gear in the assigned area each afternoon. Assists participants in locating their personal gear. Should be able to lift 60+ lbs. Approximately 15 members of this team should be able to drive a 24 truck.

Camp Water & Ice: (Closed) Works closely with Camp Dispatch staff and various Roadie Team Managers to deliver and maintain sufficient quantities of water and ice throughout camp.

Stage: (CLOSED) Works closely with staff/vendors responsible for setting up camp staging, lighting and sound. Should have experience in any or all related disciplines. Should be able to lift 75 lbs.

Pack-Up: (CLOSED) This team manages the clean up of camp each day, including the monitoring of trash and recycling throughout the campsite. Each morning, as participants depart, this team ensures that all camp areas are thoroughly cleaned up, and that the site is as clean or cleaner than when the event arrived on site.

Medical Transport: (CLOSED) This team works primarily with the crisis and medical teams, providing non- emergency transportation to and from area hospitals. May be asked to transport participant gear to hospital in cases where participant might need to leave event. Occasionally might be called upon to run other necessary errands. Should have own personal vehicle to be used as Medical Transport. Must supply proof of insurance. Should be able to lift 30 lbs.

Medical: Comprised of a variety of medical professionals, this team provides all first-aid medical services to participants in camp, and will provide emergency service where necessary until local EMS/Paramedics arrive on scene. Medical tent is staffed 24 hours each day. Medical Team will be screened as necessary for appropriate experience and training.

Massage: This team provides essential massage services to participants during the event. Ideally, massage therapists will be experienced in sports massage, with at least 200 hours of experience.

Sports Medicine: Consists of licensed allied health professionals: Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Certified Athletic Trainers and students in each discipline. The Sports Medicine crew is trained to handle all types of musculoskeletal and neurological injuries. Must be experienced with assessment and treatment of acute injury and prepared to treat with modalities, soft tissue mobilization, stretching and taping to the involved areas. Members will be screened as necessary for appropriate experience and training.

Operations Teams

Small teams generally assigned to work in roles assisting event staff include the following:

Communications: (CLOSED) Will assist with distribution and management of communications equipment during event.

Caboose Assistant: (CLOSED) This team drives the route, following last rider(s) each day and offering assistance where needed. Should have own personal vehicle (to be used as Caboose) and insurance.

Rest Stop Closure Assistants: (CLOSED) Assist Rest Stop Closure staff along route and assigned closure locations. Work with Rest Stop Roadie teams to close Rest Stops according to schedule. Should have own personal vehicle (to be used as Rest Stop Closure vehicle) and insurance.

Road Based Teams

Rest Stops: (CLOSED) This team is responsible for the daily set-up, food distribution, bike parking and traffic control at each rest stop location. These teams are the first to leave in the morning and often the last to return to camp each night. Rest Stops can include Lunch and water stops. Should be able to lift 40+ lbs.

Rest Stop Tent Team: (CLOSED) This team circulates the route early with the Rest Stop Teams and helps to assemble the Tents along the route. Must be able to lift heavy tent canvas and poles. 50+ lbs. Also assists in taking tents down at end of day. This team may work very early in the AM and into the evening.

Route Water & Ice: (CLOSED) This team assists in the distribution and replenishment of water and ice needed for each of the Rest Stops. Will also assist with pick-up of leftover water at the end of each day, as needed. Team works closely with Road Dispatch staff to be certain that all Rest Stops have sufficient hydration supplies each day. Should be able to lift 60+ lbs and able to drive a 24 truck.

Motorcycle Safety: (CLOSED) Moto Safety works with Road Dispatch staff and local law enforcement to guarantee safe passage for riders during each day's route. Assist at difficult intersections and other locations as requested. Team members must provide own motorcycle and helmet, as well as complete insurance.

Sweep: (CLOSED) This team circulates throughout the route in vans outfitted with bike racks, providing transportation to Riders needing assistance to rest stops. This is another team that leaves early in the morning and arrives late into camp, after all Riders have completed the route. Should be able to lift 50 lbs.

Bus Liaisons: (CLOSED) A small team of people each assigned to ride one of the SAG buses. These buses provide transportation to Riders from rest stops to camp, as necessary and also transport Roadie Teams from Camp to Camp. Often, this team provides necessary moral support for Riders who are disheartened by their inability to complete the route.

Bike Transport: (CLOSED) This team provides transport of bikes to camp for Riders unable to complete the day's route. This team will load bikes from camp in the morning and at Rest Stops throughout the day and offload bikes in the camp Bike Parking Area. Should be able to lift 50+ lbs.

Route Clean-Up: (CLOSED) This team is responsible for the pick-up and transport of bagged trash from each Rest Stop. Dumpsters are provided at each day's lunch stop and at camp. This is a very physical job and necessary for the event. Should he able to lift 60 lbs.

Route Medical: Comprised from the medical team to provide first aid and medical support at each of the Rest Stops along the route. Will manage any emergency situations that arise, until local emergency medical services arrive on the scene.

Lunch: (CLOSED) This team is responsible for the daily set-up, operation and take-down of the lunch area. Specific tasks include packing and distributing bag lunches, distributing drinks, setting up bike racks, controlling bicycle/vehicle traffic and cleaning up the lunch area. Members must be able to lift 20 pounds.
