What is a Roadie?

A Roadie is a volunteer worker who comes to AIDS/LifeCycle and does pretty much every job needed to support the cyclists as they travel down the coast.

Roadies work really hard, rarely complain, commit cronic acts of selflessness, donate 7 days of their lives to help ensure AIDS/LifeCycle is a successful, safe and fun filled event and even fundraise without it being a requirment!

In a nutshell, Roadies are incredible human beings who are commited to helping those living with HIV and the cause of AIDS/LifeCycle.

Basically, Roadies ROCK!

Have you chosen your roadie team yet?

If you haven't chose your roadie team I highly suggest you do so right away! We are in the final stages of team placements and roadie jobs are filling up fast. We will be announcing team placements the beginning of February.  The team captains are getting prepared and they will be the contacting you regarding your placement. Please keep in mind, the roadie team captains are volunteers as well. This is an extremely dedicated group of people and truly, the ride would not run as smoothly were it not for their expertise! Also, if there is a chance you will not be able to make it on the event please let me know ASAP. We are filling up fast and we really need to know if there is space available for those hoping to join us!

Roadie Fundraising

While fundraising is not mandatory for roadies, the roadie community is doing so at a rate greater than ever before. This is fantastic news for the clients of the San Francisco AIDS Foundationand theLA Gay & Lesbian Center. As we know the economy has greater affected those living with HIV especially in marginalized communities in which many of our clients live. For them, every dollar counts. To help encourage and support you, we have added a few Roadie specific Fundraising Incentives. At the $500 level, you will earn a fabulous roadie specific logo'd beanie. At the $1000 level, you will earn a $100 gift certificate to the camp store and if you raise $1500 by April 15th,  you will earn a rocking zip up hoodie! So go ahead and raise that money!

Roadie Team Placement

If you have not yet chosen your top three choices for roadie team, I encourage to do so ASAP. I will be announcing your roadie team placement in late January after both kickoff parties are completed. Once done, you should be contacted by your team captain sometime in February. In addition to your team captain, you should learn who else you will be working with on the team. This is an excellent opportunity to establish a pre-ride friendship and get to know your team mates. If you are a newbie, the veteran roadies are a fantastic source of information. It's the veteran roadies who really help to run this event. Their collective knowledge is literally the backbone of ALC so please; feel free to connect with a veteran roadie!

Roadie Information Workshops

In January, I will have our first online and phone Roadie Information Workshop. If you are interested in joining for this workshop, you must RSVP. There will be limited space so RSPV now! The purpose of doing this online and by phone is so that anyone may join. We have many roadies all over the country and world for that matter, and it will be lovely to have us all connect equally!  The focus will be on Roadie teams, ins and outs of being on the event and fundraising.

10K Club
This year, we wanted to help you maximize your fundraising efforts and better serve you along the way. After looking at the numbers last year, we realized there were many of you who have made your fundraising goal $10,000.  While roadies are not required to fundraise, the roadie community raised over $500,000 for ALC 10! That’s incredible! So, we have created the 10K Club

What this means is, if you set your fundraising goal at $10,000 you will be eligible for a personalized business card, the $10,000 incentives that cyclists receive along with a roadie specific incentive (I'm working on that as we speak!). Additionally, we will be having 10 for 10 socials in the next few months and really hoping to create even more community around this. This is an opportunity to really see what you can do as a fundraiser. The beauty is, you are not required to fundraise and so, have FUN with it!

Participant Page

Have you set up your participant page yet? Why not? If you need any help at all, please feel free to contact me! Your participant page is a very important part of your roadie experience. This is where you will find a lot of important logistical and event information, as well as where you are able to show your community what you are doing on the ride. Go ahead and have fun with it! Personalize it to your own taste. You can even add photos and videos!

Riding your bike even if you are a roadie

A few weeks ago, we had our training ride kickoffs in each city. I had the pleasure of doing the beginner ride in SoCal. This was a beautiful 13 mile ride in Santa Monica. It got me thinking about the roadie community. Please know, you do not have to be a registered cyclist to join a training ride. If you have any interest at all in riding your bike, our training ride program is a fantastic way to learn more, engage with the ALC community, make friends and get exercise! Feel free to check out the training ride calendar to find a ride best suited for you!

About Me

AIDS/LifeCycle 11 will be my 8th ALC and 6th as the Roadie/Logistics Manager. My first two events I joined as a roadie and I have spent the last 4 years as the Roadie Manager. This community event has changed my life in ways I can only begin to describe here.
