Join the Chain Gang for our first trip down the San Gabriel River Bike Path on the short edition of our famous River Dance Ride – besides good cheer and wonderful company, you get approximately 35 miles of practically car-free cycling in beautiful surroundings! EVERYONE is welcome!
After building up our mileage slowly and adding in a few inclines, Chain Gang tackle our first climbing ride of the year with a trip to the fabled La Tuna Canyon!
From Griffith Park, we start with our usual Studio Loop route and then continue towards Sunland, with our first pit stop at Sunland Produce. From there, we tackle the famous climb up La Tuna Canyon – it’s a great training hill with a steady and gradual 4.5 mile climb to the top, and a nice shoulder with turnouts if you need to take a break.
Even if you are new to cycling and haven’t ridden on hills yet, this is a great hill for learning: take it easy, find your hill climbing rhythm, remember to breathe, and just keep pedaling (with breaks as needed). With the help of our wonderful ride leaders, you will make it to the top and nobody is left behind!
Our reward for the climb is a fabulous long downhill on the other side, through Montrose and Glendale (with a stop at Coffee Bean to refuel) as we return to Griffith Park, and back to the starting point. We look forward to riding with you!
PLEASE NOTE OUR MEETING PLACE: we will be meeting at the Merry Go Round Lot 3 – instead of turning off Crystal Springs towards the ranger station, go up the hill on the fire road towards the Merry Go Round. At the top, turn right and go through the first parking lot to get to Lot 2, turn right into that lot and immediately right again down a little hill to reach Lot 3.
This is a fun, easy ride where you can practice your cadence and spin technique, and enjoy stress-free riding away from cars and most other traffic. It’s perfect for riders of all levels and as always, nobody is left behind!
