ALC7: OUT OF THE STAFF T-SHIRT

You want to know why I've decided to join the exhausted and elated, Clif-bar consuming masses on AIDS/LifeCycle 7?

I'm participating as a cyclist in ALC7 for the same reasons I came west to work at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation: because of the urgent need to rethink the way we look at HIV and AIDS in this country.

When I left New York for San Francisco, I wanted to help change the current model of HIV/AIDS communications, what people say about AIDS and how much-- or how little -- they know. I'm pleased to be a part of an institution with the intellectual and social capital to make much needed changes, and I'm grateful to have a role moving this work forward for more than one million Americans living with HIV and thousands more who'll become infected this year.

That said, it takes resources to make a difference. After sputtering through ALC6 as a staff member, I'm ready to put some sweat into the project and look forward to the support of friends and family along the way.

No more sponsored Subarus for me.

Half-way to LA and still goofy.
