545 miles completed in honor of Clark and Tom

We did it! 545 miles completed, in honor of Clark Henley and Tom Gardner!  It was truly a remarkable experience in so many ways.   The first was just to have so much quiet time, pedaling down the road, to think about those two wonderful men and the details of what they had contributed to my life and to those of so many others whose hearts they had invaded.

Second, the remarkable community that was created between the 2500 cyclists and the 700 or so “roadies” who created a huge “tent city” every day in a different venue, with showers, meals, and consistent and uplifting support for many (like me!) who do not ordinarily spend much time on bicycle seats.  They would even be out on the road, so that as you reached the summit of a climb, there would be a boom-box blaring and amusingly-dressed supporters with pom-poms or other accoutrements cheering you on out in the middle of nowhere.  Throughout the entire week, I saw nothing other than consistent expressions of care, consideration, and compassion.  It was wonderful.

Third, the amazing beauty and richness of our fair state.  Since it’s only 420 miles to Los Angeles from here, you can correctly surmise that we did a fair amount of back-and-forth across the agricultural heartland of California—for which I gained deep new appreciation.  While I have driven this corridor so many times, the weave of the tapestry is so much more evident at 12 miles per hour on back roads through the farms and small communities that are the backbone of the state.

I appreciate so very much all your messages of support and your very substantial financial contributions that allowed me to raise $20,000 to support services for those living with HIV and AIDS.   Thank you!

All the best,
John

jeff goldsmith (5/14/08 8:42AM): i am still reminded of clark by the cover of his book near by bed. he was a delight for me as a cousin's cousin. drive safely and enjoy.

Jo Deupree (5/14/08 6:18AM): Although we lived on opposite coasts,I have fond memories of my cousin Clark. As Tory reminded me, it's been twenty years and that's hard to believe. I, too, wonder what it would be like if he were still around...a better place for sure! Good luck on your ride!!

Jesse Clark Deupree (5/13/08 5:14PM): Hi John

I don't know if we ever met, I'm Clark's cousin who shares his name- just a little older so I was called Jesse and he was called Clark. Tory sent me a note about your ride, and I wanted to say thanks. I think of Clark often, and miss him, and it is wonderful you are doing this.

Bless you and love,

Jesse

Eleanor (5/13/08 4:42PM): Hello John,

I am Clark's niece (Victoria's daughter) and I want to tell you thank you so much for doing this ride (If I was going to be in California on this date I would come ride with you). It means a lot to my mom and our whole family. I wish that I had the opportunity to know Uncle Clark better than just from pictures of me dressed up as a dinosaur and stories from the family, but through my mom's memories and what other people who knew my Uncle have shared with me as I have grown up, I know he was a pretty special person.

Thank you for doing this for my Uncle Clark,

Eleanor(asaurous)

Roberta Pickett (5/13/08 4:35PM): Hey John - you honor life with your ride. God bless you!

Tory Henley (5/12/08 9:54PM): You were the best a friend could be to Clark in good times and in bad. From "Right on, JC!" to "Ride on, JC!" We'll be thinking of you and thanking you the whole way.

Tina (5/06/08 11:59AM): Baby,

I have seen firsthand the dedication and hard work you are putting into this endeavor. My words cannot describe the immense pride I feel in witnessing your efforts -- stretching your limits and pushing forward with heart and soul. I know Tom and Clark are beaming, as well.

All my Love, Tina

The MacDonald Family

Jim and Sarah (4/19/08 8:22PM): John - you rock. Very good luck on the ride and remember to get yourself a good pair of padded shorts. A man your age can't afford for anything to slip!

What you are doing is simply incredible, and it reminds me of why this ride is the experience of a lifetime for most. You'll have to join us for our Team Schwab picture on Day 5 at camp with the 40 others on the team this year. Bravo to your heroic efforts!

Don Team Schwab Captain

Nion McEvoy (4/16/08 1:34PM): Like, wow! It's a great thing you are doing in memory of these men, even if it isn't exactly the kind of thing I could ever remember Tom (or me for that matter) ever doing. Maybe an opera or Murphy Brown viewing marathon instead. I applaud the kind of metal you must have to put it to that much pedal. Onward!

Chris Meyer (4/12/08 12:44PM): Good for you John. I would love to be at the finish line. Best of luck.

Courtney Price (4/09/08 8:04AM): I am so happy and excited to contribute to your gift in honor of Tom and Clark. Your determination to expand your powerful and healing friendships into realms beyond time and affliction is awesome. Have a great ride.

Glen Mathison (4/07/08 9:24PM): John --

You are putting me to shame with the fundraising total!! Way to go! You've inspired me to work harder. I'm looking forward to riding with you!

Kitty and Monty (4/02/08 7:30PM): We are very touched you have dedicated your ride to the memory of my cousin Tom and my old friend Clark.

I miss Tom all the time. We were always extremely close would have had even more to talk about as we entered our dotage. Clark too. They were two true originals.

Good luck on the ride and let's make a plan to feed you when you get home.

Andy Ulrich (3/31/08 10:11PM): Hi John! (It's been a few decades!) What a great thing you are undertaking! Hope the ride is way more pleasure than pain! Clark did everything he could to help me though the death of my own partner in '86, at the same time he was going through his own agony. He became such a great friend, and I'll never forget him! Thanks for glorifying his amazing humanity this way! -Andy Ulrich Cate '69

David Harrah (3/31/08 7:47PM): I, too, remember Clark with great fondness. I remember, too, his spontaneous trip to Disneyland. You're a good guy, JP, to pedal in his memory. DH

Wendy Neustrup (3/31/08 4:08PM): God bless you for your love and kindness. Good luck on your ride. Say hello to Santa Barbara for me. Lots of love, Wendy

Stewart Bonn (3/28/08 8:02AM): This confirms it. You're insane. However hobbling around like an old man for weeks afterward is a small price to pay for helping such an important cause and remembering two great guys. Remember to ride with your mouth closed. Bugs in the teeth are so unsightly.

Rick Karr (3/27/08 2:18PM): I am delighted to participate and donate to such a worthy cause. Be sure to wear a helmet and watch out for all those people who do not know how to properly ride a bike...

have fun,, Rick Karr

Talia Baruth (3/26/08 10:10AM):  My dad (Doron) told me you are an old friend of his and doing ALC! Awesome!

W. Howard (3/26/08 8:36AM): Great thing you are doing, John. Best, Bill

Marty Stewart Huff (3/26/08 8:27AM): What a wonderful way to honor the memories of Clark and Tom. I wish you luck on your ride. May the wind always be at your back.

Phil Irwin (3/19/08 7:08PM): John- a small donation in support of you and Clark (and Tom)- hope your conditioning goes well!! Phil

Helen Spalding (3/19/08 1:10PM): I am also in that photo and loved Tom deeply. This is a wonderful thing you are doing and I am delighted to lend my support. Wouldn't the world be a much better if those two charming me were alive today.

Helen
