8:10 PM

because of this ride, there is hope.

It is now Monday.  Oddly, I am not sore or aching at all.  I am a little sad, however.  So much work for one entire year and the week flew by in the blink of an eye!  I cannot believe that it really is over.  They warn all of the riders of depression that follows the ride for many, depression that this "bubble of happiness, caring and giving" doesn't extend into our everyday lives when we return.  My personal hero, Lori Jean, challenged each of us this year to "pass it on" when we get home - the work for a better world, the hope that one day this plague will be eradicated, the joy of sharing with a friend and helping a stranger when he needs a little lift.  This ride makes me a better person.  It proves to me that I can do what I set out to do in my life, that I am capable of accomplishing goals that I never dreamed possible.  I regret that I have told everyone that this will be my last ride...I might have to secretly sneak out next year and ride without telling any of you...How anyone can experience this week of magic and not return is impossible.

I have watched the videos from the week and looked through many of the pictures.  As glorious and beautiful as they are, they simply cannot relate the beauty of what my eyes saw over the last week.  Rolling hills, mountains, plains, farms, wineries, tiny little towns, smiling school kids, hundreds of volunteers eager to offer a smile and a kind word when the days were long, and total strangers standing of their street corners for hours clapping, banging drums and offering gentle lessons in life to their children.  Amazing.

I had one physical goal: Ride as many miles as possible without getting hurt.  I rode all the miles and didnt get hurt.  Success!

The other goal?  Meet as many people as possible.  And did I meet a lot of wonderful people!  Dominic was the perfect tentmate, going to sleep as early as I needed to each night...and giving me the last night to reflect and write, while he visited with his little girls in Ventura.  Carey, a great new friend.  Mark and all his group of new friends from DC.  Jose and Vivienne, husband and wife, who suffered the same "flat tire" plague as me...and spent the rest of the week laughing about it together! Tommy and Pedro, the coolest Training Ride Leaders that give not only their time, but their hearts as well.  Geo, my studly little lady that puts the men to shame on a bike, and befriends everyone that she meets.  The boys from Mexico, the gentleman from South Carolina that helped me with my first of many flats, and the boys from church that were always ready with a smile and encouraging words. Jose I, who displayed amazing courage in speaking to 3000 people about his life, and then spent an hour just talking to me about how much it had all meant. Martin and Devin, two of my training ride leaders that seemed to magically appear at the end of a tough ride with a smile.  And so many more, too many to name - the people that I met at red lights and stops signs, the people that I sat next to at meals, the people that helped me fix flats and work on my bike (THESE people I got to know FAR too well!), the people that baked 3000 cookies for us, and the people that would just park along the route and clap, watch, smile, and encourage us all on our way.  Amazing people all, everyone so selfless, so open hearted and open minded.  It is what makes people return year after year after year - that sense of community that forms to make this world a better place, a place where suffering from this syndrome is no more.

My third ride.  Although I proudly rode the miles and climbed the hills, this thing has not gotten any easier.  The mountain climbs are there every single day, the 100 mile days dont get any shorter, and the tents never seem to get dry.  It's HARD! One entire year of training, and it is still tough for just about everyone.  Even the serious cyclists that show up at camp hours before me think of this ride as a challenge or else they all would not return year after year, each one racing to get to the end of each day first.  I had some great training leaders this year, I met some wonderful people, and we raised a whole lotta cash for a very wonderful group of people.  It is impossible not to be proud.  It is impossible not to smile.

Riding into closing ceremonies is always a very emotional moment.  People line the streets all through Santa Monica, joggers cheer and welcome us to LA, the coffee shops are bursting with riders gulping frozen drinks, cops direct traffic while clapping and congratulating us.  Then the ceremony begins that brings a tear to every eye...and we are finally reminded of why we just did this insane thing.  The riderless bike is escorted into the arena by the oldest rider (82 years old) and the youngest rider (17 years old).  What was cheers and screams and celebration suddenly becomes quiet reflection of those lost to this pandemic. Then Lori Jean takes that stage and we briefly relive "the best days of our lives." It ends and we all disperse, everyone going their separate ways.  It isn't until Monday (today) that suddenly it hits everyone - It's done.  We succeeded, but sadly, it really is over. We accomplished our goals. All those people that were my new best friends have jetted all around the world...everyone misses it, eveyone takes a look at the pictures, reads snippets from diaries and journals, googles press and emails new friends begging them to stay in touch.  This is all so much bigger than us all.  This is so meaningful and profound that we want it to last forever.

To those that sponsored me, THANK YOU.  To those that sent along messages of support, I cannot tell you how much it meant.  To those that will benefit from this ride, good health and happiness be with you.  To those that sent prayers to the heavens, it worked.  To my pastors who sent us off with the prayers of an entire congregation and the protection of a divine spirit, I am forever in your debt. To my own angels that watched over me, blew winds at my back, and put tears in my eyes when breathtaking views appeared before me, I can only marvel at your unconditional love.  I hope to someday be able to return the love.  I hope this ride makes me as wonderful a person as you.  Amazing grace, indeed.

THIS IS IT

This blog began one day after Valentines.  I set some lofty goals for myself: weight loss, a new direction in life, psychological bliss....blah, blah, blah.

What I got: Many new friends.  A wonderful sense of accomplishment (even if I dont make EVERY mile). Some great weekends filled with the most beautiful sights in California, my favorite cause made a lot of money...and I got enough exercise to keep my weight "under control."  I began writing about it, as a way for me to remember it after the ride, as a journal.  In the process, however, THOUSANDS of people logged on, read along, sent messages of encouragement, prayers, and gifts of time and money. This is the magic of The Ride.

To my sponsors this year, I thank you sincerely:

Ken T, Barbara J, Lisa F, Christabelle s, Rey HS, Tim C, Glenn G, Jamie S, Marjorie G, Thomas & Dianne, Pete B, Jeff & kim, Jorge G, Al B, Stacy C, Robert C, Daryl F, Tony B, Michael G, Richard M, Luise C, Dan V & Todd, George & Karen G, Gustavo L and Tasca Restaurant on Third in LA, Chaya Restaurants, Falcon Restaurant, Tanzore Restaurant, Madame Chocolat, Hasty & Johnny Khoei, KC S, Philip E, Tom B, Derek W, MCC, The Edison, Weber Shandwick, CRPR, and my HERO'S at Hollywood Pro Bikes (these guys ruuuule!)

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE RED RIBBON (this from Germany)

Red Ribbon - The History

In one sentence, I would describe the meaning of the Red Ribbon as follows:

»The Red Ribbon is the global symbol for solidarity with HIV positive and people living with AIDS and it unites the people in the common fight against this disease.«

If you focus on the meaning of the color Red in addition to the symbol of the ribbon, it is easier to explain why wearing the Red Ribbon is more than just showing sympathy with those affected:

The Red Ribbon is ...

  • red like love, as a symbol of passion and tolerance towards those affected.
  • red like blood, representing the pain caused by the many people that died of AIDS.
  • red like the anger about the helplessness by which we are facing a disease for which there is still no chance for a cure.
  • red as a sign of warning not to carelessly ignore one of the biggest problems of our time.

In early 1991 Visual AIDS in New York created the idea for a global symbol in the fight against AIDS. A symbol for solidarity and tolerance with those often discriminated by the public - the people living with HIV and AIDS. In the style of the yellow ribbons, which were popular in the USA at the time as a symbol for awareness of those soldiers fighting in the gulf war, the Red Ribbon was born.

Following first events in the New York art scene, Visual AIDS soon was aiming at the Tony Award. In a spontaneous campaign, volunteers sent letters and Red Ribbons to all attendees. Unfortunately, movie actor Jeremy Irons was one of the very few celebrities wearing the Red Ribbon that night. The TV audience was not informed about the meaning of the new symbol.

Nowadays, almost everybody in the USA is aware about the Red Ribbon or even owns one himself. The symbol first came to Europe on Easter Monday in 1992, when more than 100.000 Red Ribbons were distributed during the Freddie Mercury AIDS Awareness Tribute Concert at London's Wembley stadium. More than 1 billion people in more than 70 countries worldwide watched the show on television. That same day, Red Ribbon International in London was founded.

Since then, many similar groups have formed in various European countries following the example of this very first European organization. At the end of 1993, Red Ribbon Germany was born. In Germany, the Red Ribbon was first made known to the public during the ZDF Pop Show which was broadcasted all over Europe by German TV station ZDF in December 1993. The meaning of the Red Ribbon was explained by moderator Kristiane Backer during the show. In September 1993, Red Ribbon Germany became a support group of the German AIDS Foundation. Since we started in November 1993, more than 10 million Red Ribbon were distributed in Germany.

Red Ribbons can be ordered free of charge in small quantities via the Munich office. If you need large quantities of Red Ribbons for the organization of events, please contact Red Ribbon International directly.

RANDOM THOUGHTS WHILE IN STATE OF MILD PANIC

I spent $150. at target today: new duffel, earplugs, suntan lotions, etc.  AND still missing several items on the lists.  OY.

I spent an hour reading a "get ready" email sent out by one of the teams that I had joined for a couple of training rides...SO NICE of veterans to provide so much of their time and advice to make everyone's journey as easy and enjoyable as possible!

On that note, I would like to take one minute to thank all of my TRLs this year!  So much kindness from so many people...I could never have done this without the help of these great people...always supportive and always ready with a quick smile or a quick laugh to take my mind off my aches! You guys are the best!

42-17511123 - Woman with wings

I can't figure out HOW this time has finally managed to arrive.  I committed to riding during LAST YEAR'S closing ceremonies - to think that was actually a YEAR ago is almost incomprehensible!!  This has been an incredibly wonderful challenge for me, both physically and emotionally.  I am SO HAPPY that I chose to ride again.  I hope that I can make every mile again, without any injuries (my GOAL is the "no injury" part); my hope however is to meet as many wonderful people as possible and to remember as many moments as possible...and understand in my heart that I TRIED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

MAGICAL WORDS OF SENDING

Today, my pastors, Rev Neil Thomas and Pat Langlois at MCCLA, sent off a group of seven members with the blessings of our entire congregation.  At the very last moment of the service, Rev Neil asked that everyone please be seated and spoke of "giving from our hearts...making a difference in the lives of others."  He then asked each of us that will be making this journey to join him at the front of the church, where the entire congregation joined in a prayer of safe travels.  It was one of the most moving experiences of my journey, thus far.  Rev Neil is a brilliant speaker and often speaks directly to the heart of all that arrive for comfort and the spiritual journey that MCC provides to all - many of whom never thought that they would step foot in a church again.

Neil spoke of the remembrance of our friend, and fellow ALC participant Paul Gronberg.  Paul was a very active member of MCC and lived with hiv since its inception more than twenty five years ago.  The last time I did the ride, Paul spoke to the entire ALC group at one of the evening gatherings.  He spoke of our responsibility for one anther....and the responsibility that comes with love and friendship, including taking friends with drug abuse problems by the hand to help them seek recovery, rather than simply looking the opposite direction, as is usually the case. It was one of the most moving moments of the entire week.  And, after all Paul had endured throughout his life, he passed away last summer while enjoying an outing at the beach with fellow members of MCC.

My sincere thanks and love to Rev's Neil and Pat...and MCC...for giving us all the courage to "let go of our worries and fears" and experience the journey of a lifetime.

This is for you, Paul G. and James J.  You are not forgotten.

IT ALWAYS SEEMS SO LATE

Every time I have done this ride, I think:  I have not trained nearly enough.  I am not ready.  I should have dieted.  I should have bought a better bike...

I read a BRILLIANT post today on alc...a lady was climbing up garbage truck hill, and her "voices" kept telling her that she could not do it.  In the end, she told the voices to "please stop talking while I am accomplishing this little miracle in my life."

For those of us that find this ride to  be the challenge of a lifetime...we hear many "little voices."

The flip side of that is my own friend that tells the check out girl "he's doing the aids ride."  It humbles me to a point that I never experience in my normal daily life.  Why would she care?  Why would she say such nice things?  Why would she show such interest?

The beauty of THE RIDE is that the rider gives to a great cause, gives up much of his/her life and weekend plans...and in the end, miraculously receives much more than he/she gave.  It is truly miraculous.

I hope to spend much time on those long, agonizing stretches contemplating my gifts...the gifts given to me in this life....

I AM ONE LUCKY BOY.  Every once in a while, I just need a liitle kick in the ass (or an aidsride) to remind me of just how fortunate I am.

It really is never too late.  For anything: love...redemption...change.

I am ready, for one last time, to discover it all....while peddaling my ASS OFF!!

WHHHHHHHAAT? DID HE SAY 70?

From ALC Press Release...READ TO LARGE PRINT!!  INCREDIBBBBLLE!!!

Three thousand people from around the world and nearly every state, ranging in age from 18 to 81, will participate in this year's AIDS/LifeCycle. The 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, which begins June 1, is expected to raise more than $11 million for the fight against AIDS--more than any other annual event.

Since its inception, AIDS/LifeCycle has raised nearly $40 million for HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs. Despite the demanding physical nature of the ride, it has become so popular that, for the first time, registration closed months before the weeklong trek was set to begin.

AIDS/LifeCycle has been a major force in raising awareness about the continued effect of HIV and the growing need for services as the number of people living with the disease continues to grow in California and across the country.

"We've made many advances in the struggle against HIV and AIDS, but the fight is far from over," said Lorri L. Jean. "During the time it will take us to reach L.A., more than 1,000 Americans will become newly infected with HIV. What's more, HIV continues to be nothing less than a healthcare crisis internationally and in our own back yard. The 3,000 riders and volunteer roadies -- and the 60,000 people who sponsor them -- are raising awareness and making a statement that we will not stand idle in the face of the monumental challenge before us."

This year, AIDS/LifeCycle will put added emphasis on the importance of HIV education and prevention.

"Though we understand how to stop HIV, every year more people in our communities are newly infected with the virus," said Mark Cloutier, chief executive officer of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. "Better prevention tools will help revitalize HIV prevention and focus on reducing -- and perhaps some day eliminating -- HIV in California and elsewhere. AIDS/LifeCycle makes it possible for both organizations to explore HIV prevention that meets the needs of our communities, including many of the groups most vulnerable to HIV infection."

Over the course of the weeklong event, cyclists will pass through eight California counties, where each year local residents line roadways and visit rider rest stops to show support. In past years, cheering groups of school children have stood alongside the road with homemade signs and refreshments. Many local residents show support with signs of thanks that invoke memories of loved ones lost to AIDS.

The record number of participants in this year's event represents a full range of cycling

experience and expertise, from novices to seat-hardened "hammerheads" and includes a

contingent of cyclists living with HIV known as the Positive Pedalers. This year, 19

riders and eight roadies are older than 70. Riders train for months in advance of the

ride and commit themselves to raising at least $2,500 each to support HIV-related

services at both organizations. Meeting the physical and emotional challenges of the ride

serves as an example that encourages healthy choices regardless of age, HIV status and

physical limitations, organizers said.

In addition to being a momentous physical challenge for the riders, AIDS/LifeCycle is a major logistical feat. Each day, crews of hundreds of volunteers set up and break down a "city on wheels" of tents, mobile kitchens, bathroom and shower facilities and support gear. These volunteers, called "roadies," perform myriad other duties, including posting directional signs, serving meals, repairing bikes, providing first aid and entertaining weary riders with impromptu performances -- often in costume.

It is estimated that 160,000 Californians are living with HIV/AIDS, many of whom are unaware of their infection. In California, HIV/AIDS has had a particularly severe effect on the gay community, with more than 73 percent of all cases occurring among gay and bisexual men of all races and ethnicities, compared with 59 percent of AIDS cases nationally. Communities of color, including gay and bisexual men, have been disproportionately affected as well. For example, although African-Americans comprise only 6.7% of California's population, they account for nearly 19% of those living with HIV/AIDS in the state.

The route of the ride and the overnight campsites are as follows:

  • Sunday, June 1--Opening Ceremony: The Cow Palace, 2600 Geneva Ave., Daly City, CA 94014. 79.3 miles to Santa Cruz. Camp 1: Harvey West Park, 326 Evergreen Street, Santa Cruz , CA 95060
  • Monday, June 2--105.4 miles to King City. Camp 2: San Lorenzo County Park, 1160 Broadway, King City, CA 93930
  • Tuesday June 3--75.2 miles to Paso Robles. Camp 3: Mid State Fairgrounds, 2198 Riverside Ave., Paso Robles, CA 93447
  • Wednesday, June 4--98.7 miles to Santa Maria. Camp 4: Preisker Park, 2301 Preisker Lane, Santa Maria, CA 93458
  • Thursday, June 5--43.5 miles to Lompoc. Camp 5: River Park, Sweeney Road & Hwy 246, Lompoc, CA 93436
  • Friday, June 6--84.1 miles to Ventura. Camp 6: San Buenaventura State Beach, 901 San Pedro St., Ventura, CA 93001
  • Saturday, June 7--60.8 miles to Los Angeles. Closing Ceremonies: V.A. Center, 11301 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90025

CONVERSATIONS WITH A BARBER

I found myself driving past my barbershop today and thought "better do it today for the ride."

Went in, sat down, asked "what number do you usually use on the clippers?"

"Number Two."

"Let's use Number One Today."

"NOOOOOOOOO.  That's way too short for you."

"No, I need it short for the next couple weeks, it's fine."

(Visualize said barber cutting a strip through the side of my head.)

(Visualize the sounds of my squeeling.  LOUDLY!!)

My heart actually raced...this, the very next morning after someone in Los Angeles actually complimented my grey hair!

IT'S GONE NOW.  ALL GONE!!

In keeping with the humor that I hope to enjoy from this any time now...i replay one of my favorite early ALC videos for you:

THE PARTY

This past Thursday was my fundraiser at The Edison in downtown LA.

I MADE MY GOAL !!  YIPPEE!!

A very heartfelt THANK YOU to all of those that arrived to support me.  It means a great deal that you took the time from your busy lives and I will be forever grateful!

AND, a very special thank you to my BFF Barbara Jacobs, who supplied me with prizes for the raffles, all her fishbowls, professional signage, tickets, etc.  Barbara works with almost every AIDS organization in Los Angeles.  She is a pro and she is beloved by all of her clients...and probably all her know her!  This lady never stops working on behalf of these organizations.  (www.barbarajacobsevents.com)

To all my friends and family who have helped to make this final journey possible...THANK YOU.

GOOD NIGHT. NO LIFE.

It is 9pm on a Friday night...and, once again, I am going to bed!!! BED AT 9PM!

The Solana Beach ride is tomorrow...91 miles and starts in IRVINE, which means I have to leave the house by 5am to get there at 6am!!

Then, the famous train ride back to Irvine.  A little nervous about the heat tomorrow...it was 100 in LA today!

Oy.

The fundraiser was FABULOUS!  Not sure if I have actually hit the money goal or not...and too tired to count it now!  A very special thank you to everyone that came!  You are the best.

MAKING TIME

This is for all of us...

who are too busy, too stressed, too broke, too overworked, too worried about China, too...to think that "YOU CAN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE."

YOU CAN.

Twenty-four hours before my fundraiser, this little ditty from my good friend Dave says quite a bit about MAKING TIME.

Who else will?
